Breaking: Eight Supers Switching to Hillary

by: Alegre

Tue Jul 15, 2008 at 16:52:28 PM EDT

Big news folks - it looks like our efforts in contacting those Superdelegates are starting to pay off, so keep on writing to them (ok, maybe Donna B's a waste of time).  There are unconfirmed reports, based on phone banking efforts to reach out to Super Ds, that eight previously Obama SDs expressed that, given the opportunity, they would vote for Hillary at the convention.

I heard about an interview Will Bower of PUMA did recently, where he said delegates are starting to say they'll vote for Hillary in Denver if the DNC did the right thing and ran an open and fair convention.  That means a roll call vote with Hillary's name put into nomination, and on the ballot.

So I shot an email to Bower to ask him where he got that info from, and here's what he sent me regarding the efforts of a friend of his

"A large phone banking effort to the super d's combined with Obama's flips and poor presumptive nominee performance, etc have yielded doubts within the super delegates, enough that 3 elected and 5 DNC members have confided that should they have the opportunity to do so, they will vote for Hillary."

Maybe this is why BHO and the Toxic Trio are pushing so hard to keep Hillary off the roll call ballot eh?  I've been wondering what they're so afraid of  now it looks like we have part of the answer.

Alegre :: Breaking: Eight Supers Switching to Hillary
I think Politico may have stumbled upon one or two reasons why the Supers are starting to take a fresh look at Hillary.  The above news paints this article in a whole new light for me.  MassLib touched upon all this in an earlier diary today re BHO being a PUMA but I thought this was worth another rant.  The folks on the Hill (aka Super delegates) are getting pissed at BHO for the lack of effort on his part when it comes to fundraising, coordination and support theyre getting in their own bid for re-election etc.  Todays Politico has the story

After a brief bout of Obamamania, some Capitol Hill Democrats have begun to complain privately that Barack Obamas presidential campaign is insular, uncooperative and inattentive to their hopes for a broad Democratic victory in November.

They think they know whats right and everyone else is wrong on everything, groused one senior Senate Democratic aide. They are kind of insufferable at this point.

From a total lack of effort re fundraising for Dems in town-ticket races, to little or no heads-up when he turns up in their district, theyre feeling more than a bit dissed and ignored by our presumptuous nominee.

OF course Democratic leaders paint a rosy picture, saying theyre working well together with BHOs camp and explain away the arrogance as confidence yada yada yada

Some Democratic leadership staffers complain that, having defeated the vaunted Clinton political machine in the primaries, the Obama campaign now feels a sense of entitlement that leads to arrogance.

One Democratic aide, speaking on the condition of anonymity, compared the Obama campaign unfavorably to President Bushs administration.

At least Bush waited until he was in the White House before they started ignoring everybody, the aide said.

Having battled Hillary Rodham Clinton into June, Obama hasnt had much time for the normal interaction between a campaign and Congress. And having to struggle to help Clinton pay off her own debt, he hasnt had the time or the resources to raise money for Democratic House and Senate candidates. (Emphasis added)

And oh yeah Pelosi and Reid didnt even know about BHOs big ol party at Invesco Field until it was announced during a presser.  Thaaaaaaaaats right folks - they found out when the reporters found out.  DOH!  I mean I know hes the change candidate and doesnt want to be photographed with them (or Muslim women for that matter) but come on!  Theyre the reason hes gotten this far on such a thin record in the first place.  He ought to at least wave to them when they pass in the hall or something.

So as far as his failure to raise $$ its all Hillarys fault that he cant raise the funds he needs eh?  The long campaign battle and helping her pay down whats left of her debt are eating into his time to reach out to down-ticket Dems and raise funds eh? Hes been struggling to pay off the last $5 million eh?

Oh PUHLEASE!

They've barely lifted a finger much LESS struggled.  One hundred thousand?  Pffft!  With their donor base that was what - a handful of phone calls?  Ive put more effort into fundraising than that poseur has!

And BTW... if he'd stuck to his promise and taken public fundraising he'd have EIGHTY MILLION DOLLARS in the bank - free & clear.  No phone calls. No fundraising AND the money he's asking us to pony up now would be available to down-ticket Dems in tight races.  But nooooooooooooooo!  He sends out his demand that we cough up yet ANOTHER 300 MILLION before mid-october while wasting 3 million on a big-ass party at a stadium so he can control the message and split up Hillary's supporters among MASSES of O'Bots who aren't even delegates.

Ya know if I were a super delegate in a tight re-election race I'd be pretty pissed right now.  He hasn't lifted a finger and has started replacing staff at state party offices with his own bots who focus on nothing but his run for the WH.

No money. No fundraising pitch. I'm sure they haven't and won't get a look at that golden list of his. He can't be bothered to let them know when he 's coming to town.  And he's ripping the state party apparatus right out from under them so no support there - support that was put in place to help them is now being replaced by bots whose sole focus is to elect The Precious.

Yeah - I can see why those Supers are starting to take a fresh look at Hillary, and are swinging back her way.  No way would Hillary ignore down-ticket dems or toss them to the curb the way BHO has.

H E L L O  SUPERS?! Anyone out there??!?!?!

What is there to fear? (4.00 / 8)
What punishment might the Toxic Trio use against the delegates?

A.  Howard Dean will scream at you.
B.  Donna Brazile will sit on you.
C.  Nancy Pelosi will blink at you 1,000 times, but lose count around 700 and have to start over.

LoL! (4.00 / 5)
The koolaid fuzzy wuzzies is wearing off. Hopefully many delegates are thinking (and planning) on doing the same thing. Great news.

Came across a new term for (4.00 / 7)
the Kool Aide Condition:  Hopenitized. Maybe his arrogance is slapping some of them awake.  Wake up, dammit.  Before it't too late.

Mr. Toad's Wild Ride? (4.00 / 5)
I hope to see more of this, even if he can hold onto the nomination a little consideration for party members who want a big picture that includes all of us, and some specifics on his policies will have a better chance if he sees his delegate support erode.  Fear of offending him isn't a good enough reason to keep him as the candidate, that will make it hard for him to win the GE.

Hillary - alternative energy

Too good to be true, but I love hearing it (4.00 / 6)
There is such joylessness in this campaign right now. I can't imagine this guy being our pres for four whole years. Just a dreary gloomy gus. He's either lecturing one group or the other on how they SHOULD live, or he's being offended by somebody and asking everybody to reject and denounce the offensive comments on his behalf.

How can he protect us if we're all running around protecting him from being offended?

I'm with you, Catfish. (0.00 / 0)
Obama is boring, and he likes to preach -- I call him a sanctimonious hypocrite, because by his own accounts in "The Audacity of Hope" he hasn't exactly been a choir boy (though he's also not been the biggest Hellraiser on the block, either).  I find this obnoxious tendency of his quite annoying and stifling.

I also agree with you that this is the most joyless campaign I've ever seen; Walter Mondale had more fun than this in 1984.  So did Dukakis, even after Bernard Shaw's atrocious comment in 1988.

It's time for Obama to go -- as Evelyn Pringle's article title has it, "Curtain Time for Barack Obama."

And it's time for Hillary Clinton to come back into the picture; this is her time and we are her people, precisely because we do think for ourselves.  (As a friend of mine said last night to me in a telephone call, the main difference between Clinton supporters and Obama supporters is that we think for ourselves and we argue with each other.  Amicably, usually, but we do argue -- we're not a bunch of Stepford wives and husbands, or as most of us would put it, O-bots.)

We need Hillary R. Clinton; we need her desperately.  She must come back into this race for the good of the United States of America.  Otherwise, we are doomed.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

OK I hate to be a wet blanket but (4.00 / 1)
they are less likely to agree to allowing Hillary a role call vote if they think the nomination could be overturned. If we explain the symbolic significance of the roll call vote, and ensure them it is just for the history books, they should agree to it and they will look really stupid and petty if they do not.

Also, I feel like his booking of that huge stadium for his acceptance speech was his way of ensuring they could not overturn the nomination.

How do we get around the stadium? Let us brainstorm ...

Get around the stadium (4.00 / 1)
The stadium owner or management company could refuse to lease the space. I'm sure they have rules against trashing the place.

Down-ticket dems thrown under the bus (4.00 / 3)
who is next? I bet he would throw Donna under the bus. The Supers need to wise up.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

If we can get the AA supers to throw him under the bus (4.00 / 3)
we have a chance.

[ Parent ]
Wait - if we can get him to throw Donna under the bus (4.00 / 3)
that could crack his phalanx of DNC defenders open a bit. Let us strategize ...

[ Parent ]
Crack his phalanx (4.00 / 3)
The switch of the 8 Supers is the beginning. Keep contacting them! Donate money to pay down Hillary's debt and donate money to The Denever Group and PUMA Pac so they can run ads. We've got to keep the pressure on them.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

[ Parent ]
I heard about this two weeks ago, or nearly. (4.00 / 1)
I'm all in favor of this and I'm glad Will B. has been able to confirm it.  Because the supers need to wake up and realize they've been had -- Obama is not the one we've been waiting for -- he's probably not even the one he's been waiting for. ;-)

More seriously, we all know who Hillary R. Clinton is and what she's about; there are no surprises with her and we can count on what she says.  She also has really grown on me as a candidate and I believe anyone who can convert Richard Mellon Scaife, of all people, can do wonders for this country.

And that's good, because we need her to do wonders.  Which is why we need her as our next POTUS.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

[ Parent ]
Count on what she says (4.00 / 1)
Yes, we can. Yes, we can.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

Which Is Better... (4.00 / 4)
ignoring downticket Dems or campaigning for them using the wrong name?  Those candidates are better off without Obama.

It's amateur time in the Democratic party.  I think some of the superdelegates are beginning to understand this.  That's probably why they would be comfortable voting for Clinton.

Eight down and 167 to go.

OMG I Heard About That One! (4.00 / 3)
His plane "broke down" or was "having problems" and had to stop in St. Louis so he phoned it in to the fundraiser he was supposed to attend.  Problems is, he got the name of the woman running for governor completely wrong.

File that under "more harm than good".

Yeah.

Alegre, diary needed (4.00 / 3)
On what "roll call," "ballot," and "placed in nomination" mean. I'm new to the convention process and could use some help understanding it. I'm sure I'm not alone. We need facts and clarity about the process. Can someone with knowledge on the subject please post a diary detailing the process or provide a place where we can find accurate information?

I got this from The Denver Group:

There is a crucial difference between Senator Clinton's name being "on the ballot" and having her name being placed in nomination. And the difference is between being a genuine candidate and something that is nothing more than a symbolic sham. Both the DNC and Senator Obama's campaign may be attempting to negotiate a settlement where Senator Clinton's name is on the ballot but not placed in nomination. They may think that is enough to assuage her voters. They may think that voters can be fooled. Our ads are going to make sure they know that no one is going to be fooled.

We're going to let them know Senator Clinton's name on the ballot is not good enough. Her name must be placed in nomination for it to have any meaning so that super delegates have a real choice in deciding the nomination by casting their votes for either candidate. Nothing less is acceptable. And they're going to know it.

I'm surprised that Hill Dems are surprised (4.00 / 5)
Obama has a history, as far back as the State Senate in Illinois, of using people and discarding them.

He also has a history of taking credit for the work others do.
He's shown that tendency in the short time he's been a US Senator.

Dean, Reid, Pelosi, and others let Obama and his people take over the Democratic Party.  If they don't like the results, too bad.

I suspect that some of these Supers have heard stories, first hand, from those he's used and discarded during his time on Capitol Hill. Perhaps they've heard stories from those whose hard work Obama co-opted.

Like Obama, they didn't do their homework.

Well Jim Webb Finally Figured it Out (4.00 / 4)
He saw what BHO did to Gen. Clark and said thanks but no thanks to the vp spot.  Despite what he said in his press releases ("under no circumstances..." "but I'll work for BHO blah blah blah...") Hillary can probably count on his vote when push comes to shove.

Invest in Women - Change the World

[ Parent ]
And when you get a vote like Webb's -- (4.00 / 1)
the vote of a recovering misogynist -- that says a great deal, doesn't it?

Actually, I like Webb, mostly because he seems to be honest about being a human being that has flaws.

I also love it that he said NO to Barack Obama!  I am still very thrilled to hear this because I thought Webb one of only two people who'd actually help Obama win the Presidency if the DNC continues to be stupid and insist on Obama even though he will lose.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

The Dems NEVER do their homework! (4.00 / 5)
That is why we always LOSE!!!

Obamapeople have been insufferable from the get-go.  If they keep this up, they will have ALL the superdels at Hillary's feet, begging her to unsuspend.   Let him keep digging his own grave!

We didn't lose the game, we just ran out of time....Vince Lombardi

Wowsers! (4.00 / 5)

OK, now the Obots are freaking out and getting hysterical. Their campaign funding is drying up and they're sending out urgent pleas for donations. This is the best article I've seen that describes what happened in the primaries and why Obama might be having a problem now.

http://camille424.wordpress.co...

That article also describes why it's vital that Hillary win the nomination and that it's still possible. Please spread it far and wide.

Country before party.

Rise Hillary Rise (4.00 / 5)
The thought of some of the delegates taking a serious look now is at least something. I have been feeling a little hopeless. This has been the worse I felt during an election in my lifetime. Obama is horrible. He is a fraud.
Instead of feeling hopeful for the future. I am actually scared of it.

I didn't understand this part (0.00 / 0)
of the Politico story:

We all know what happened to [former President] Jimmy Carter and [former President] Bill Clinton. We don't want to see a repeat of that."

I know Carter came in thinking he didn't "need" the Congress but I don't recall that with Clinton.  Can someone refresh my memory on that?

AWESOME News (4.00 / 1)
Wahoooooooooooooooo this is great news! The SUPER DELEGATES did this to Hillary so they can get us out of this mess and ELECT Hillary (as we did)

OOOOOOOOOOOOoooooooooo just have fun!

Hillary's name must be placed in nomination (4.00 / 1)
There is no question about it! Hillary's name must be placed in nomination! We must keep putting the word out to Super Delegates that Obama can't win the election against McCain.

He's losing his base. His poll numbers are dwindling. People are beginning to see what an empty suit he is.

OMG!! (4.00 / 1)
Pleeeeeeezzzzzzeeeeee make it so.

Remind the Super's that it took FDR 4 roll calls before he FINALLY became the nominee!!!!

I just wonder - IF - the super's did manage to change the current outcome....

does anyone really believe the o'bambi supporters would ride that unity train to DC?

I don't......I'm thinkin' we'd lose anyway....
