Hilllary Clinton: Let's Keep People In Their Homes

by: catfish

Thu Sep 25, 2008 at 11:41:36 AM EDT

In today's Wall Street Journal, Hillary reminds the country we need to think of Main Street as much as Wall Street:

...I've proposed a new Home Owners' Loan Corporation (HOLC), to launch a national effort to help homeowners refinance their mortgages. The original HOLC, launched in 1933, bought mortgages from failed banks and modified the terms so families could make affordable payments while keeping their homes. The original HOLC returned a profit to the Treasury and saved one million homes. We can save roughly three times that many today. We should also put in place a temporary moratorium on foreclosures and freeze rate hikes in adjustable-rate mortgages. We've got to stem the tide of failing mortgages and give the markets time to recover.

Presidential candidates - listen to her! She is leading.

Full article here.
She concludes:

Corporations that will benefit [from the bailout] must be held accountable, not only to large shareholders but also to the American people, who are rightly tired of business as usual: short-term profit at the expense of long-term viability; lax oversight and regulation; obscene bonuses and golden parachutes regardless of performance; reckless risk-taking that has placed the markets in jeopardy; rewards for foreclosing on middle-class families and selling mortgages designed to fail; and outsourcing good jobs to serve short-term stock prices instead of America's long-term economic health.

This is a sink-or-swim moment for America. We cannot simply catch our breath. We've got to swim for the shores. We must address the conditions that set the stage for the turmoil unfolding on Wall Street, or we will find ourselves lurching from crisis to crisis. Just as Wall Street must once again look further than the quarterly report, our nation must as well.

Bill Clinton (4.00 / 4)

was on tv last night pushing Hillary's HOLC proposal.

What gets me is when the press calls a RENEGOTIATION of homeowners' outrageously high interest rates a bailout for homeowners.  It's  not a bailout.  The homeowners are still paying off their loans, just with a more reasonable interest rate.  Everyone wins with this.  Homeowners keep their homes.  Banks still make money (just less than the outrageous original rip-off).

anyway......

Wow I hadn't heard the press do that (4.00 / 1)
When I hear bailout I think they're referring to AIG and the big banks.

The homeowners - there is so much fallout. Sure, some people were irresponsible and got greedy with house-flipping. But a lot of people who'd lived in their homes for decades were suckered into renegotiating perfectly good mortgages. Also abandoned homes will create neighborhood blight, depressing property values of those who are paying their mortgages.

Right now it's the Wall Street bailout (4.00 / 2)
that's dominating the news.  and that is a true bailout.

but earlier this year when Hillary and some other Dems were putting out proposals to deal with the homeowners' growing foreclosure crisis, many in the press were saying why should the taxpayers bail out those homeowners, who should get their own bootstraps up -- and if the bootstraps were broken, too bad, the homeowners brought it all on themselves.

"bailout homeowners" (0.00 / 0)
searched in Google brings up a ton (21,800) of hits.

when it's individuals (4.00 / 3)
the have a 'moral' obligation to pay, according to pugs, but when it's fat cats, they get to  hit the reset button?  Good find kitty, Hillary, as usual, tells it like it is.  And, in language anyone can follow. That's one of those 'not elitist' signs that is also a sign of clear and logical thinking. They go together.

Hillary - alternative energy

This HLOC seems like a great idea (4.00 / 4)
and now is the perfect time to get it implemented. The public will is there. The taxpayers could MAKE MONEY off of an HLOC for crying out loud!

What does the Clown Prince have to say.... (4.00 / 2)
...oh, excuse me....

er...uh...well...let me get back to you on that....

After I've served my first term in office. See, Obama has only one plan, that's what his syncophants mean when the say 'The One', that one plan is....

Get elected.

The rest?

Who gives a fuck, eh Tony?

True meaning of The One (0.00 / 0)
