WE WON!

Events in life seem to continually put us in a position of being winners or losers.  But each of us must define for ourselves what is meant by winning and losing and not be led astray by how the media may define it.

We subscribe to the conviction of Grantland Rice:

It's not whether you win or lose, it's how you play the game.

Some may think the winners are the ones who voted for and supported the medias choice.  But those of us who have stood fast against the onslaught of misogyny, hate and derision know that we are the winners.

We won because we believe deeply in gender equality.  We won because we censored the Democratic Party for cooking the books in their Primary for the sole purpose of defeating a woman and maintaining the status quo of good ol boy politics.

We won because no matter how much it hurt and no matter how cruelly we were taunted and blasphemed by friend and foe alike, we stood firm because all the evidence showed that the best candidate for the job of president was a woman.

We won because we never wavered in our passion despite the piles of crap and garbage thrown at us.  We watched former ally after former ally turn away from us as their courage and conviction evaporated in the storm of blog and media hype.

INVICTUS

by William Ernest Henley; 1849-1903

Out of the night that covers me,
Black as the Pit from pole to pole,
I thank whatever gods may be
For my unconquerable soul.

In the fell clutch of circumstance
I have not winced nor cried aloud.
Under the bludgeonings of chance
My head is bloody, but unbowed.

Beyond this place of wrath and tears
Looms but the horror of the shade,
And yet the menace of the years
Finds, and shall find me, unafraid.

It matters not how strait the gate,
How charged with punishments the scroll,
I am the master of my fate;
I am the captain of my soul.

Thank you for this. Acting with integrity is more important than winning.

Working for the right women... (0.00 / 0)
I'm going to try this again.

This site has huge value because Alegre consistently puts forth posts that pinpoint issues and situations that we can work on.  Whether it is abuse of girls and women in other countries, or the press in this country, or the political structure in this country, they lead to directions to put labor and money into.

With this campaign finished, regardless of how anyone feels about Obama, the efforts to do a bunch of things, from reforming the primary system, lobbying for more women in the media and a different kind of coverage of women from the media, human rights issues concerning women, getting many more young women into the pipeline to political office, and much more, have to continue.  I would like to put some energy into this, whether it's letter writing, an occasional contribution, calls, and I hope that my support of Obama in this race can stop tainting my value to other women's causes.

I have fought hard all my life for women's rights.  I grew up in a time when women just were not taken at all seriously.  When I was taking my degree in fine art at Cooper Union, (graduated in 1968) I remember a professor announcing to us on the first day of the first term that he had a problem with the girls because even if they were very good they were just going to go off and get married and so why were they even bothering.  We've come at least some ways from that but not far enough.

Anyway, I think if a blog like this is going to be maximally  useful in a positive way, we need to think about the goals we share right now.

Or am I branded from ever working on women's issues with a permanent O emblazoned on my T-shirt?

Anyone who supports Hillary and her issues (0.00 / 0)
is welcome here. The door is swung wide to include Obama voters, non-voters, McCain voters, whoever, as long as they want to stand for a better party.

Invictus is a great poem (0.00 / 0)
But it was also used by that guy who blew up the Oklahoma building.  I think he wanted it read at his execution.

Well, suum cuique.  As evil as his deeds were, he was the captain of his soul.

Hmmm (0.00 / 0)
I have fought hard all my life for women's rights.

Except for supporting that flaming misogynist Barack Obama, I guess. How many times did you laugh when your fellow followers called Hillary a c***? Or Palin? How many times did you reprimand them for suggesting that Hillary or Palin should be murdered, raped, or clubbed on the head?

Meh. I suppose all should be forgiven at this point, but some things can never be forgotten. I would suggest that if you and your fellow Obama followers want to be welcomed with open arms, you might want to start with a recognition of the brutal misogyny that your candidate not only encouraged but flaunted to his benefit.

But it's not my blog, so my opinion may be of no value.

You have no idea of who I am........ (0.00 / 0)
I never called names, and always called others out who did, on both sides.  I post at myDD, you can look through all of what I wrote and make up your own mind about that, but to assume that I go along with that crap from anyone...you really have no idea what you are talking about.

And okay, since we clearly have no goals in common, I will stop coming here.  I don't need the namecalling, I have enough stuff to deal with in my own life.

[ Parent ]
You don't need to leave, mady. (0.00 / 0)
Opossum was wrong to attack you.  I don't understand why you considered Obama's run exceptional, and a once in a lifetime thing, and didn't consider the same for Clinton, a person who shares your gender.  But, that is something I will never understand of the women who hold your same view.  Nevertheless, your comment above was supported and rec'd and there is no reason why you cannot return here and I am sure I am not the only one who looks at the comment made to you as inappropriate.  We all have a common purpose, now.

[ Parent ]
Just run away then (0.00 / 0)
if you want to be coddled, it doesn't seem like you really are for standing up for people's rights.

"And okay, since we clearly have no goals in common, I will stop coming here."

If you share no goals with this site then that's a shame. In your own words you say you have too many personal problems to discuss issues so that's understandable if you don't want to come here. Nobody is forcing you.

We all get flamed now and again. You think Hillary supporters didn't have to absorb flame insulting comments at the other blogs? This is nothing. While I would stand up for you this is the second whiney post I've seen from you today - you're complaining about being victimized because you support O. Lots of people on this blog supported him but I don't see them complaining.

[ Parent ]
Coddling can be nice, but that's not my point.... (0.00 / 0)
No I "complained" because I was being accused of something I just don't do.  Unfair rankles.

Look, my life is difficult.  I want to contribute, it's important to me.  I do it on the computer because I can't really get out much.  I love a good argument but the accusations of namecalling, misogyny, etc, well they are like sandpaper on skin.  I don't do it, I don't want it done to me, and yeah, it is hurtful.

If I can find a way to offer something of value I will.  This site, as I said, appealed to me because of the amount of really substantive stuff that Alegra puts out, but I don't want to bang my head against a wall when I can be doing work in a cooperative environment.

I made my choice in the primary for my own reasons, but never out of disrespect for Hillary Clinton.  I did consider her run a once in a lifetime thing (to date, God I hope another good woman runs in my lifetime!) but I also considered his run in that light, and I chose the person I felt would be a better president regardless of gender.  My reasons are my own and they were not based on sexism.

[ Parent ]
She wasn't just a good woman (0.00 / 0)
she really was a once-in-a-lifetime candidate when you read her history. Her college classmates told her she could be president someday.

God you don't know when to stop digging, do you?

[ Parent ]
I apologize and this is just not going well... (0.00 / 0)
I keep digging myself deeper.  Let me try to explain.  I read about Hillary when she was in college, actually looked for and read her stuff and was utterly taken with her brilliance and openness.  I did not mean "just another good woman."  I did not consider Hillary Clinton just a good candidate.  What I was trying to say, is I hope I have the great joy and satisfaction of being able to vote for a gifted woman for President.  To me, we had two once in a lifetime candidates this cycle and you and I chose differently.

I can't seem to be able to open my mouth today, and not just here, without antagonizing someone so I really will go away for a bit.  You know, please, I did not mean just another woman.  That thought goes against everything I believe in.

[ Parent ]
Sorry mady (0.00 / 0)
You should be out celebrating. You don't have to explain, and explaining will make it worse.

[ Parent ]
mady, look down thread at Oppossom's (0.00 / 0)
other comment to you.  We are all just hurt today.  Once again, we are looking at yet another male, when there was so much opportunity to elect a fantastic woman.  It is the same old slap in the face.  It is a very hurtful feeling to me to never see someone representing us who truly cares about women and has fought along with us her whole life like Hillary, but we have to keep fighting, and we can't do it without help of a lot of people regardless of their views.

[ Parent ]
If you really were.... (0.00 / 0)
"utterly taken with her brilliance and openness" you would never have supported Barack Obama - the exact opposite of brilliance and openness.  IMHO.

You must have supported Obama for other reasons - but don't demean HRC in your rationalization, please.

[ Parent ]
you chose wrong (0.00 / 0)
according to most of the people here.  Learn to live with it.  Hillary made Obama look like a piker and he stole the nomination with fraud at the caucuses.

Now how exactly did that make him a better candidate for PResident?

[ Parent ]
This is an excellent post, Twandx. (0.00 / 0)
Thank you.

I will never give up the fight for ethical government, for women's rights, for the right to free and fair elections that are counted accurately, and against political corruption and opportunism.

I continue to stand against Barack Obama because of the way he waged his campaign.

However, I am for all the values Hillary Clinton espoused (and still espouses); I am a Hillary Clinton supporter forever.  She deserved better and she still does; I will continue to support her.

I will continue to call things as I see 'em, even if it's unpopular.

I remain a PUMA Democrat.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

straight up - that's the only way we know how to play it. (0.00 / 0)
beating the republicans means getting more votes than they did- not adopting their tactics.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Silence is not an option! (0.00 / 0)
Yup, I think a large segment of the Democratic party woke up to the problems and sexism in the system.

And I think this will lead to more positive changes in the future.

Now's the time to increase the pressure in a productive way with a focus on action and future elections.

? (0.00 / 0)
I think a large segment of the Democratic party woke up to the problems and sexism in the system.

Those who left, you mean?  The Dems who remain seem to be comprised of 100% rapid Palin-attack dogs.  And they don't even realize that they are now acting in a sexist manner.

[ Parent ]
I apologize mady (0.00 / 0)
I apologize, mady, I overreacted and you're right, I don't know you. I just am a little touchy today, and it's hard to make nice when we took so much abuse from Obama supporters over the past however long it's been. I have friends who voted Obama and we've agreed to disagree on that while we can agree on other issues. You made your points and I sincerely apologize for flying off the handle.

let us all remember... (0.00 / 0)
...that there are people whose support we will need to reform the party who didn't see things our way this election.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Thank you... (0.00 / 0)
....campskunk and Dancing Opossum.  I was not going to come back here because of some stuff being thrown at me in another similar thread (it is way too easy to treat people on line in a way that one would never do in person) but I just wanted to say how much I appreciate your decent and graceful comments.

There is so much work that needs to be done, and I will find a way to contribute what I can.

No more party labels for me (0.00 / 0)
The Obama campaign has tried to suffocate democracy within the Democratic party by drowning its opponents in a wave of greenbacks of questionable origin. In reality, his supporters have failed to stifle those Democrats who were truly disgusted with Obama's abuses. He ran an odious campaign, and most on the left ate it up. I, being a centrist, have decided that I don't belong in this scumbag party anymore, and I will be seeking my walking papers shortly.

I have read some of the leftwing blogs today, and they just reinforce my gut feelings about them. The leftwing of the Democratic party is no better than the extreme rightwing of the Republican party. They are two peas in a pod that use the same loathesome tactics to get what they want. Unfortunately for America, the extreme left has found itself in possession of the POWER that they have desired for so long, and they will now proceed to shove their myopic philosophy down their opponents throats. You are either with them or against them... where have I heard that before? My eyes have been opened, and I will never vote solely on party labels anymore. McCain / Palin had the correct slogan... Country First, and I will continue to vote this sentiment. The Democratic party is dead to me, a party of maggots feeding off of the dead carcass of a once grand party. It's time to move on.

One question before I leave though. What makes leftwing Democrats think that they are the enlightened ones? They have shown me an ugliness that belies their proclamations of tolerance and equality. Common sense has left the party which is evident by the bowing and acquiescence to its most liberal ideologues. This is a party in its final throes, not one starting a new beginning.

The Democratic party has become a party of coercion.

The basic problem (0.00 / 0)
...is that you're not talking about leftwing Democrats. The new breed of Democrats who have taken over the party, more properly they should be called Obamacrats, are hardly leftwing. Au contraire. Obama can barely bring himself to utter the words "Democratic Party" and if you called him a liberal he'd deny it the way you'd deny being called a child molester. Obama is a moderate Republican, period. He's Joe Lieberman: a rightwing pandering tool who uses the Democratic Party to his advantage while stupid spineless Dems grovel and weep and beg for more. (Is it coincidence that Lieberman was his mentor in the Senate, or that he supported Lieberman over the actual Democrat in the CT race?)

As to Obama's supporters, I wholeheartedly agree that many of them are intolerant loudmouths and sexist jerks. I do hold out hope for SOME of them -- not the entrenched zombies like the prog-bloggers, but some ordinary supporters. I was once young, stupid, and convinced of my own moral superiority--I was even at one time (yes I admit it) infected with a bad case of CDS. I recovered. Some of them will, too.
