A Call to Delegates

by: Alegre

Still in the "we get mail" category... I got an email from Will Bower at the Puma / Just Say No Deal coalition, and I thought part of it was worth sharing for discussion-sake here.  They're looking for a few good delegates with a conscience - 175 to be exact - who would be willing to jump ship and back Hillary.

The fate of the United States -- and the future of the Democratic Party -- now rests with a minimum of 175 Democratic delegates who must now exercise their mature political judgment in the service of their country, and turn away from Obama to support Senator Clinton. As of now, Obama has about 2229.5 delegate votes, with 1766.5 pledged delegates and 463 superdelegates. Clinton has 1896.5 delegate votes, with 1639.5 pledged and 257 super delegates. Shift just 175 delegates from Obama to Clinton, and Obama's power grab comes to a halt. There must be no nomination of Obama on the first ballot. Once Obama has failed to secure the nomination on the first ballot, the party will be able to reflect on who the nominee ought to be, based on the experiences of June, July, and August. Senator Clinton is pledged to an orderly, sane, and secure pullout. Clinton wants mandatory universal health care and a freeze on foreclosures.  She wants to shift the federal gasoline tax away from motorists, truckers, and farmers and towards the Oil Industry. Obama is on the wrong side of all of these issues. Hillary Clinton is and has always been on the side of traditional Democratic Party values. We want a president from the Democratic Party, not from a small group of elite, libertarian Neo-Liberals. Lexington and Concord were started by a few dozen farmers. Does the Democratic Party still have 175 patriots with the courage to take a stand?

Now please don't take this next bit the wrong way - I'm in no way comparing superdelegates to monkeys.  But I thought of something I used to have on my old website after Will Bower sent around the above email.

The Hundredth Monkey

The Japanese monkey, Macaca Fuscata, has been observed in the wild for a period of over 30 years.

In 1952, on the island of Koshima scientists were providing monkeys with sweet potatoes dropped in the sand. The monkeys liked the taste of the raw sweet potatoes, but they found the dirt unpleasant.

An 18-month-old female named Imo found she could solve the problem by washing the potatoes in a nearby stream. She taught this trick to her mother. Her playmates also learned this new way and they taught their mothers, too.

This cultural innovation was gradually picked up by various monkeys before the eyes of the scientists.

Between 1952 and 1958, all the young monkeys learned to wash the sandy sweet potatoes to make them more palatable. Only the adults who imitated their children learned this social improvement. Other adults kept eating the dirty sweet potatoes.

Then something startling took place. In the autumn of 1958, a certain number of Koshima monkeys were washing sweet potatoes - the exact number is not known. Let us suppose that when the sun rose one morning, there were 99 monkeys on Koshima Island who had learned to wash their sweet potatoes. Let us further suppose that later that morning, the hundredth monkey learned to wash potatoes.

Then it happened!

By that evening almost everyone in the tribe was washing sweet potatoes before eating them. The added energy of this hundredth monkey somehow created an ideological breakthrough.

But notice. The most surprising thing observed by these scientists was that the habit of washing sweet potatoes then spontaneously jumped over the sea. Colonies of monkeys on other islands and the mainland troop of monkeys at Takasakiyama began washing their sweet potatoes.

Although the exact number may vary, the Hundredth Monkey Phenomenon means that when only a limited number of people know of a new way, it may remain the consciousness property of these people. But there is a point at which if only one more person tunes-in to a new awareness, a field is strengthened so that this awareness reaches almost everyone.

If we could convince the first 100 delegates to make the switch, then maybe the rest will follow and gladly.  After watching BHO race to the right over the past few weeks - go back on his promises re FISA, public financing, withdrawing our troops from Iraq, and most recently - our reproductive rights they can't be happy about supporting him these days...

So keep this in mind as you contact those superdelegates folks.  You may think it's not worth it but your email or phone call could be the thing that convinces that 100ths person decide to switch (back) to Hillary.  Even though you're one person - you could make a huge difference in what you do - or don't do. One drop of water could be the one that makes a bucket overflow. Your words could make the difference so think about that - and act.

I wonder (0.00 / 0)
Let's think it through, because this sounds amazing.  What if the impossible happened?  What if we COULD find 175 SDs that had smartened up and had enough, and turned the reigns over to the REAL candidate?

My questions (and I'd like to hear yours)
Would we have enough time to set up the ground operation?
Would we have enough time to turn the fundraising back on?
Who would Hillary pick for HER VP (safe to say-Richardson is off the list!)?
Would we need anything from Obama?  Because if we pulled this off by surprise, I can't image we're going to get a ton of help?
What would the reaction be from the rest of our Hillary supporting brothers and sisters who have shifted gears to Obama?

My big question- if we take them by surprise, and I certainly think we can- do you think we have any chance to win, or will we just make one AWESOME statement to the Democratic party?

the people who vote in november haven't gone anywhere. (0.00 / 0)
see my diary on hillary supporters (The Unity Pony Gets Colic) - they STILL think hillary is the better candidate.  hillary was doing much better against mccain than obama was when they stopped polling for hillary at the end of may. switching to hillary as the nominee will increase the likelihood of victory in november, not decrease it.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

That's true... (0.00 / 0)
...but how do we get it DONE?  I'm not saying we can't do it by any means (I think you called this a concern comment in another diary- far from the case, it's more like a PLEASE GOD LET THIS HAPPEN diary!)... I'm asking what happens if we get that 175 SD swap and STUN the entire free world at the convention?  Because I assure you- nobody is expecting this to happen, and it's going to take people by surprise.
