Clinton & Murray Introduce Bill to Block HHS Ruling

by: Alegre

And they're getting help from Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights, and the ACLU in this noble fight.  Hillary may be looking at other options but she's still our champion in the Senate when it comes to protecting our reproductive rights, and she and Senator Murray sent out the following press release to let us know they're not done fighting to defend our rights - check it out...

SENATORS CLINTON AND MURRAY INTRODUCE LEGISLATION TO STOP NEW HHS RULE THAT WOULD UNDERMINE WOMEN'S HEALTH CARE

WASHINGTON, DC - In light of reports that the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) is preparing to enact a rule that would undermine critical health care services for women and families, Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) today introduced legislation that would prevent the HHS rule from going into effect.  The proposed HHS rule would require any health care entity that receives federal financing to certify in writing that none of its employees are required to assist in any way with medical services they find objectionable.  The proposed bill would keep HHS from moving forward with this rule.

"In the final days of his administration, the President is again putting ideology first and attempting to roll back health care protections for women and families.  The fact that the EEOC was never consulted in the drafting of this rule further illustrates that this is purely a political ploy.  This HHS rule will threaten patients' rights, stand in the way of health care professionals, and restrict access to critical health care services for those who need them most.  Senator Murray and I are standing up once again to the administration against this rule and will continue to fight for women's reproductive rights. President Bush is making a last-minute attempt to undermine women's health care, but our legislation will stop this rule and ensure that women can continue to get needed health care," said Senator Clinton.

Make the jump - there's a LOT more...

Alegre :: Clinton & Murray Introduce Bill to Block HHS Ruling
"It's now clear that the Bush Administration is so desperate to move their political agenda forward that they are even willing to ignore the advice of their own appointed lawyers.  But patient protection and access to care should never take a back seat to politics," Senator Murray said. "Senator Clinton and I are introducing this legislation to ensure that the health of patients always come first.  For eight years this administration has worked to undermine women's health but they won't get away with it on their way out the door."

"This midnight regulation is another outrageous attempt by the Bush administration to deny women access to vital health care information and services," said Planned Parenthood Federation of America President Cecile Richards. "Planned Parenthood applauds members of Congress for taking on the task of undoing the abysmal policy mandates and we stand ready to work with them to ensure women have access to the full range of reproductive health care options."

Senators Clinton and Murray have led the effort to block HHS from implementing this new rule. Following a meeting with HHS Secretary Michael O. Leavitt on September 23, Senators Clinton and Murray led a group of 28 Senators urging Secretary Leavitt to halt the proposed HHS rule.  Senators Clinton and Murray on called for the meeting with Secretary Leavitt on August 8 after Secretary Leavitt failed to reply to several letters from the Senators and instead defended the proposed HHS policies on his personal blog.

The senators have worked in the past to stop efforts by the Bush Administration to put in place ideological barriers to women's health. They successfully led the fight to secure an administration decision on the over-the-counter sale of Plan B emergency contraception after more than three years of Administration delay.

Bush may be doing what he does best - he's ignoring the needs of the people and is catering to a handful of extremists in a last minute attack on our rights.  But Hillary's also doing what she does best - she's fending off those attacks from extremists who would take away our rights.  She's been leading the charge in this fight for a long time now, and I'm glad to know she's still standing strong against BushCo's last minute attacks.

As I said above the jump, Planned Parenthood, the Center for Reproductive Rights and the ACLU are joining in on this fight, and have gone on record in their opposition to this ruling with a letter to OMB.  You can read it HERE

Planned Parenthood also has some great information on this backdoor attack on our rights HERE

Now comes the ACTION part of this post... Planned Parenthood's got a petition drive going calling on the Bush Administration to withdraw this proposed rulemaking and you can SIGN IT HERE.

Bush and the republican party is already reviled by the public with only 34 percent (0.00 / 0)
in a survey I saw today, having a positive view of republicans and their party.  Yet after a big defeat, they continue to go on and do the same things that they have been doing all along despite the message sent to them that enough is enough.  I hope the party completely implodes. Many of these last minute regulations that Bush is pushing through can only be changed back by a law through Congress.  That makes it even more important that Democrats get to 60, so that all the damage done by the right and their hero, Bush, can be undone.

I am glad that Hillary and Murray are still at it in seeing us through this.  If Hillary does leave the Senate, we still have a good advocate in Murray and hopefully even some of the new democrats, who will  see this and many other things through for us and really, all of America.

According to the CBS NY news last night.. (0.00 / 0)
the decision will come after Thanksgiving. So, figure a week from today at the earliest. My guess is that they are stringing it out for maximum agony factor for her supporters, and then when we can't stand it a minute longer, drop it on us that she isn't getting, or accepting, the post. Obama has no idea the effect these mind games have on people. He thinks he can do as he pleases with public support. I guess no one ever told him that he can lose it too. The wonderful opinion, based on nothing much, that people have of him is easily changed by his own actions. Now that he is President-elect, he can't blame his decisions on other people. If he skunks Hillary, it will not be anyone's action but his. And it will cost him. Her fellow Senators aren't going to like seeing her jerked around, even if they didn't support her. Neither will the rest of the country, or the world. Obama and his misogyny might go over well in a US election, but it won't play well abroad. I can't wait for him to call Angela Merkel "Sweetie". Won't that be a diplomatic coup??

CALL THEIR OFFICES AND SHOW YOUR SUPPORT! (0.00 / 0)
Just called Senator Murray's office and spoke to Mary who has been doing the grunt work on this. She will forward me the list of 28 Senators who are supporting this effort and I will post it as soon as I get it.

Just 28 are supporting their efforts? (0.00 / 0)
Where are the rest of them?  That is a pitiful number considering there are a lot more dems than that.  I don't suppose Lieberman could take a little bit of time away from being special and work on it, too.  Does this mean that 28 support it, or that there are 28 active on getting the bill passed.  I have fallen into  a digusted with Dems mood, and I can't get up.

I'm Sure Mikulski is Among The 28 (0.00 / 0)
Cardin had better be on that list too, or he's going to hear from me.

Big time!

Is there a companion bill in the house? I know my Rep Velazquez was standing at Hillary's side when she did the new conference early on.

What is the proposed legislation? (0.00 / 0)
Interesting the content is never mentioned. Is it just to counter this new ruling? Because "health" workers already have way too much right to deny women advice and services.

All health care professionals should be required to dispense ALL legal health care. If they don't like it, they should choose another profession.
