ELITISM ALERT: Harry Reid at the new DC Visitors Center

by: LSekhmet

Harry Reid had a pretty speech written out to commemorate the new DC Visitors Center (which went massively over budget, as does seemingly everything in government including the recent Treasury Dept. bailout for Wall Street), but couldn't stick to it.

Instead, he decided to comment on how, in the summer, tourists smell bad.

Really.

Here's a direct quote:

"My staff tells me not to say this, but I'm going to say it anyway," said Reid in his remarks. "In the summer because of the heat and high humidity, you could literally smell the tourists coming into the Capitol. It may be descriptive but it's true."

Here's a link to what Reid said:

(Keep going; I have more.)

The reporters' opening paragraph summed this up surpassingly well:

The Capitol Visitors Center, which opened this morning, may have tripled its original budget and fallen years behind schedule, but Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid found a silver lining for members of Congress: tourists won't offend them with their B.O. anymore.

I'm sorry; this is our Senate Majority Leader?

Really?

My goodness, are we in trouble, if rather than deal with where the money for the Treasury Department bailout of Wall Street has actually gone, Harry Reid would rather comment on tourists and their annoying body odors.

As I said in my title: elitism alert!

(I guess Reid considers we, the American people, "the great unwashed?")

I couldn't help it; couldn't pass this up. (0.00 / 0)
I don't know what Reid was about.  But this was idiotic.  (Besides, it really amused me.)

This guy should not be the Senate Majority Leader if he can't make better off the cuff remarks than this.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Hmmmm...evil mind at work here..hehehe.. (0.00 / 0)
So, Alegre.. you live near DC, right?? If you have a dog, or one of your neighbors does, then the next time that dog gets skunked..well, give him some nice clothes to sleep on before he gets de-skunked..then wear them to Harry's office. Let him find out what a really stinky tourist smells like. And be sure to sit on his office sofa, etc. so the smell will stay with him for a while. Anyone else live near DC? If so, feel free to adopt the idea and carry on!!

Live your life in such a way that when your feet
hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders & says
'Oh $#!%'...she's awake!!

I love that idea! (0.00 / 0)
Way to go, FlaDemFem!  Great thought. :-D

Any odor there might be from the tourists, is dwarfed by (0.00 / 0)
the stench that comes from politicians like Reid.  I cannot believe that he found it fine and dandy to say something like this.  Excuse the people who pay your salary for showing up at your worksite to make sure you are doing your job, Harry.  What a jackass.

That, exactly, is why I wrote this up, Hopscotch. (0.00 / 0)
Well, that and my wicked sense of humor.  I couldn't stop giggling over this -- because it was either laugh or cry, and I'd rather laugh.

At any rate, I agree with you.  Wholeheartedly!
