Why Rick Warren Matters

by: Politica

Tue Dec 23, 2008 at 15:15:02 PM EST

( - promoted by campskunk)

This is why:

A woman in the San Francisco Bay area was jumped by four men, taunted for being a lesbian, repeatedly raped and left naked outside an abandoned apartment building, authorities said Monday.

Detectives say the 28-year-old victim was attacked Dec. 13 after she got out of her car, which bore a rainbow gay pride sticker. The men, who ranged from their late teens to their 30s, made comments indicating they knew her sexual orientation, said Richmond police Lt. Mark Gagan.

Because speech claiming that women are inferior according to the Bible and comparing homosexuality to pedophilia encourages this sort of violent, criminal and fundamentally disrespectful behavior.

And having Rick Warren give the Inaugural invocation sanctions it.

now he's whining about bloggers. his theological position is that we need to get a life. check it out - skip the pablum at the start and look around the 1:50 mark.

um, rick, i HAVE a life. the problem is, some people think god gave them permission to interfere with it. if i were you, i'd double check that with god before you act on it again.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

I will never understand this kind of mentality (0.00 / 0)
I always think of the Oliver Sachs book, "An Anthropologist on Mars" - that's how I feel when I observe this kind of behavior.

and then had to go throw up.

This disgusting guy is getting a primo spot at a presidential inauguration.  Thanks to Barry.  I really really hope some of my gay friends who drank the Kool-aid are rethinking things now.

Sad . . . (0.00 / 0)
Skolnik said the group plans to analyze hate crime data to see whether fluctuations may be related to the gay marriage bans that appeared on ballots this year in California, Arizona and Florida.

"Anytime there is an anti-LGBT initiative, we tend to see spikes both in the numbers and the severity of attacks," he said. "People feel this extra entitlement to act out their prejudice."

Makes me wonder about the rise in crimes against women in the past 2 yrs.

I hope this woman heals quickly and has all the love and support she will need.

What a horrible thing! Shame on these brats! (0.00 / 0)
As for Rev. Warren, he should know better.  Even if he believes homosexuality is wrong and a sin -- which neither is, IMO -- he should always say "love the sinner, hate the sin."  Those folks can be reached and will make accommodations, while the haters just hate.

See, I prefer the former attitude even though it's still wrong, because it doesn't blame someone who is GLBT for being who he/she is.  And those folks sometimes come all the way around toward realizing that "live and let live" and "tolerance" should mean more than just "let them live but shun and abhor them, while talking down about them at every turn."

Politica, thank you for pointing this out, even though I devoutly wish this had not happened to this poor woman.  She did not deserve it, does not deserve it now, and should not have to deal with the horrible aftermath rape leaves.  My prayers are with her.

As for those awful, awful supposedly-men, may God have mercy on their souls -- because I assuredly will not.  And I hope the San Francisco legal system will find a way to throw the book completely at them -- even though the evangelical lawyers will be out in force, no doubt, against what they see as rampant sin -- even though the only rampant sins committed here were by these horrible, horrible supposedly-men!

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

having to listen to the cries of all us netroots types.  Don't we know we are only ATMs?

If Obama knew anything, anything at all about psychology and considered the past of (0.00 / 0)
African Americans and the impact on them of a public person giving permission to hate them, he might not have done this to gay people.  That is supposing that he named Warren as the speaker out of ignorance and not to use them as a pandering tool.

A good friend I met on the caucus fraud documentary (0.00 / 0)
who worked for MLK, and happens to know Obama professionally, says BHO knows AA psychology as if he's studied it cover to cover. In her opinion, his moves with McClurkin and endless charges of racism against the HRC campaign were cold calculations. He saw the math better than we did, and knew that he needed to polarize African Americans to have a shot at the nomination, and he knew he could pull it off. He still lost the popular vote, but it was a matter of realpolitik that he exploit people the way he did.

I should mention that some of the most loyal, brilliant HRC supporters are blacks who saw right through the cynical bullshit. Remember the delegates on CNN after HRC's convention speech? Remember Alice Palmer? There are a lot more people of their caliber, experience and savvy.

But in Nov., such cynical manipulation was unnecessary. The pollsters were dead on about the mix of the electorate (39 D, 32 R), and BHO and his people knew that he could easily afford a romp through CA like Bill and Hillary had done to fight hot button ballot wedge issues in '92 (immigration) and '96 (affirmative action). But run this mental experiment: would Obama campaign to oppose a ban on affirmative action if it cost him even a point in popularity? How about in a state where it would push up his popularity? Does this guy have a moral compass?

I was so repulsed when I first read about this last night... (0.00 / 0)
... I couldn't come up with anything less crude than, "woman assaulted by Obama voters."

Sadly, this sort of crime is encouraged by cultural signals like having the face of Yes on 8 give the inaugural invocation and like the boys will be (frat) boys tone of Obama culture. I wouldn't be the first to point out that misogyny and homophobia are joined at the hip. They came to an ugly confluence in this crime.

Is it too extreme to bet that the criminals are Obama voters? They sure as hell aren't Hillary voters or Democrats, but I'm sure they feel like they fit in with our current culture. What a wonderful Big Tent. Perhaps Melissa Ethridge's spouse can come to some sort of understanding with the rapists. We should reach out to people we disagree with, even if they're thugs, you know.

Ah, the age of Obama.

I'd say they include some of those who turned up at McCain/Palin rallies, as well. (0.00 / 0)
Remember the ATM assault that never was?  She was willing to beat herself up only in support of the republican.  Somehow, I think that a woman beating herself up and a woman getting beat up to make a point all stems from the same mysogny.

it's not just the homophobia and misogyny. (0.00 / 0)
caro has a diary up with a cache of saddleback church's website before they edited out all the homophobia stuff in the last few days. these people are deeply anti-scientific... and obama says we have common ground with them.  um... i'm searching for it.

get a load of the creationist "dinosaurs are jesus ponies" stuff.

What about dinosaurs?

Question: How do they fit in with the idea that God created the world rather than the world evolving on it's own? Why doesn't the Bible talk about dinosaurs?

Answer: The Bible tells in Genesis 1 that God made the world in seven days, and that he made all of the animals on the fifth day and the sixth day. All of the animals were created at the same time, so they all walked the earth at the same time. I know that the pictures we all grew up with in the movies were that dinosaurs roamed a lifeless, volcanic planet. Remember these are just pictures drawn by someone today! The Bible's picture is that dinosaurs and man lived together on the earth, an earth that was filled with vegetation and beauty.

yeah, those are just pictures.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

See, we need to get this out there. He's not a "conservative" who thinks gay marriage is pedophilia, he's a nutjob who thinks gay marriage is pedophilia.

And then what? (0.00 / 0)
And the Dinosaurs aren't around now because?

Oh, that's right must not have been room on the ark.

Women and 1 Corinthians 14?
Question: I was reading in 1 Corinthians 14:34 that women are not allowed to speak in the church. Whoa - what's up with this!?

Answer: Historical perspective really helps with this one. In that day, men and women sat on different sides of the church. For a woman to ask her husband a question she would have to shout it to the other side of the church or disrupt the church service by getting up and walking over to him. Apparently, this is exactly what was happening in the Corinthian church, and their worship services were becoming a zoo. Paul is saying, "Listen during the worship service, and talk about your questions on the way home."

it's right there in the bible, folks.

"Now I want you to realize that the head of every man is Christ, and the head of the woman is man, and the head of Christ is God." 1 Corinthians 11:3

apparently, the only access women have to god is through their husband. see, i knew husbands were good for something.  the mormons are big on this, too. a woman has to be brought into heaven by her husband.

I thank God (0.00 / 0)
I was not brought up in a religious household!

Seriously. Bad enough to get bombarded with crap about one's inherent inferiority from all sides culturally. If I'd had the religious indoctrination as well, I'd still be in therapy.

I've known some incredibly righteous, wonderful, progressive religious people. But so much of the "Abrahamic Triad" - Christianity, Judaism, Islam - has at its core the subjugation of women that I tend to be very suspicious and negative of those religions overall.

Homophobia during the Crimaries and Crookuses (0.00 / 0)
I grew up in a "brokeback mountain" part of eastern Oregon as a boy who loved to plant flowers instead of hunt, as a boy who loved arts not sports, as a boy who never had a girlfriend, and as a boy who as oober blonde, blue eyed, and rosey cheeked as a Barbie doll on her best days. NEVER WAS I CALLED A "FA****OT" or beat up, or harassed.  In the reddest of counties, and where Rush Limbaugh is daily scripture.

Then, at age 32, as a tall 6'3" damn toned man, I volunteered for Hillary with other men and women and for the first time in my life, I was subjected to slander and threats by people holding Obama signs.  I was called every name but a child of God, and the women I was with , were spat on frequently, and called "bi***"  "Dy***" and "stupid rascist wh***es"  Not by the Rick Warren's or the Rush Limbaughs, or the people who like my father listen to them daily....but by self professed democrats supporting a Democratic candidate who was my State Senator, who I had volunteered for and contributed to during his meteoric rise in Illinois Politics.

The worst of it was that my favorite commentator....Keith Obamasmann, started saying things like "someone should take her into a room and only HE comes out" which complimented Chris Mathspews "she-devil" and "she's only where she is now because Bill cheated on her" in such lovely way that with my favorite Fox line "it cries!" following New Hampshire.

Of course, Obama had no qualms saying of Hillary calling him out on his Ohio Republican-esque Healthcare smear pamphlet, "you know how Hillary gets when she's down or emotional, she has to, you know, lash out"

No, I am not surprised that violence against women is on the uprise when these are the rolemodels for men everywhere.

"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. When you stumble, keep faith. When you?re knocked down, get right back up. And NEVER listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on."
