Hillary Remains Most Admired Woman - Gallup

by: campskunk

Fri Dec 26, 2008 at 17:56:27 PM EST

Every year in December, Gallup polls Americans to see which man and which woman they most admire. There's no multiple choice - Gallup records the first and second name which come to mind for each respondent.  Obama won the "most admired man" category, which is unusual in that it's normally won by the sitting president. George Bush couldn't get elected dog catcher at this point, so Obama beat him out. Unpopular presidents Nixon, Ford, and Carter were also beaten in the past.

For some reason who's president doesn't seem to have as strong an effect on the "most admired woman" category (gee, I wonder why), but the results are still remarkable - Hillary won again, as she has every year since 2001, when Laura Bush won. Prior to that, Hillary won every year from 1993 to 2000. Prior to that, it was often won by the First Lady:

Nancy Reagan (won) three times in Ronald Reagan's two terms, and Barbara Bush twice in her husband's one term. Even Rosalyn Carter, whose husband suffered from low approval ratings for much of his last two years in office, achieved the top spot three out of her four years in the White House.

So why has Hillary practically retired the trophy, regardless of who's First Lady? Maybe it's all those people who hold the values of the first and second generation feminists, that what matters is what you DO, not what you're a symbol of.

Maybe this is why Hillary can't be president.

I Got Involved in Her Campaign To Change a (0.00 / 0)
lot of things.  How we picture our Presidents is one of them.

As many of you know, Barbara Mikulski is the first woman to have ever been elected to the US Senate.  Ann Lewis -  one of Hillary's most trusted advisors - was Barbara's campaign manager when she won that senate seat back in the early / mid-80s.  I had the pleasure of hearing Ann speak at a local event last month, and she told us about something some know-it-all guy said to her during that campaign.

He told her (as if this was some huge news flash to Ann) that Barbara just didn't look like a senator.

Ann's response?

She looked him in the eyes and she said she was determined to change the way senators looked.

She refused to back down.

People think of our President as a man because that's all we've ever known.  We need more women (and men) like Ann in our fight to change how our Presidents look here in the good 'ol U S of A.

Hillary may not have won the nomination this year, but I think she'll still have a shot at it if she decides to make another run at it in 4 or 8 years.  I count 18 million reasons for her to go for it.

Given the folks that BHO's surrouneded himself with in the past... well a lot could happen in 4 years that would leave the field open in 2012.

I think my Rep parents would vote for her (0.00 / 0)
I'm still rather speechless they really wanted her to say yes to SoS. I knew they were paying close attention this year to both parties, but that was not something I expected to hear from my Dad! Mom, perhaps, but Dad?! That tells me a lot about her impact, and not just during this campaign. If she didn't have her history behind her, she wouldn't have had the same effect. It's who she is, and has always been, that has guided her and kept her moving forward. She has changed how people look at First Ladies, Senators and Presidential candidates, etc. How they look at women in positions of "power" {Dawg, I hate that word/implication}. Her passion (and intellect, drive, etc) are what propels her forward, not a lust for the top of the dog pile or the good ol' boys club. Much more honest than what we get from, ahem, "others".

Thanks CS for the diary. I hadn't realized her history with this Gallup Poll! Damn! She's good, lol!~  ;)

she made (0.00 / 0)
competence a selling point. Back when there was that big scandal over the white house travel agency hacks she was blamed for criticizing, I bet lots like me were all wait a minute - they can't get the tickets written, the head stores other people's money in his private bank account, there is no accounting for any money and she was wrong for saying they're (in other words she was being polite) hacks?  I though they were more likely cheating hacks.

Back when they did that long and nasty investigation into the Clinton financial dealing and found nothing, just nothing, but then continued to spread the charges as if they were simply not yet proven rather than bogus to start with, a lot of normal pugs put two and two together.

This was the silent majority that began admiring her. Since then she's taken more heat than anyone else bar none and continued getting her work done and being honest and yes, competent.

She's scouting a lot more too, who share her sort of work ethic and honesty.   She's most admired because she's most admirable?

That's quite a Top Ten List for the Ladies (0.00 / 0)
Palin #2 despite her treatment from the press and late night comedians.

Palin at #2 (0.00 / 0)
may just show that more people then we think are impressed with women of valor.

Or it may also indicate name recognition.

But sadly, it may tell us what we already know, that is that the media seldom recognizes women for admirable charactics - just whether they are dogs or filty rich or babes.

And more sadly, neither do most women.

Both names at the top mean (0.00 / 0)
... people don't think the way the major media tell them to. Hillary and Palin are completely contrary to the false narrative constructed by the pampered elite.

It's not quite clear what's happening, but sometime early this year, non-Obama supporting Americans began to ignore media messages, and see right through bias, as if it were transparent as glass.

well, (0.00 / 0)

SOME people don't think the way the media tells them; too many do, which is why Obama is president-elect....

I'm glad to see this, and I agree with you, PJ. (0.00 / 0)
Campskunk, thank you so much for pointing this out.  (I only just found this.)  I am very glad that we have more people who recognize Senator Clinton's admirable qualities in this country than I'd previously thought -- and that at least some of us can, as PJ said so eloquently, look past the media narrative and see through bias, "as if it were transparent as glass."

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.
