Reid Called Blago - Cornyn Goes After Reid

by: Alegre

Sat Jan 03, 2009 at 21:12:45 PM EST

It looks like everyone has something to say about Blago's pick for BHO's senate replacement.  The Chicago Sun Times reports that a few days before Blago was arrested, Harry Reid rang Blago to warn him off naming Jesse Jackson Jr., Danny Davis, or Emil Jones to the post because he feared they'd lose the seat to the GOP in the next go-'round.

Reid pressured Blagojevich not to appoint Jackson Jr. to Obama's U.S. Senate seat
...Reid called Blagojevich to argue he appoint either state Veterans Affairs chief Tammy Duckworth or Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan, sources told the Chicago Sun-Times. ...

Blagojevich spokesman Lucio Guerrero confirmed that Reid (D-Nev.) and U.S. Sen. Robert Menendez (D-N.J.) - the new chief of the Senate Democratic political operation - each called Blagojevich's campaign office separately Dec. 3. Sources believe that at least portions of the phone conversations are on tape.

True to form, John Cornyn is wasting no time in going after Reid for his efforts at influencing Blago.

Alegre :: Reid Called Blago - Cornyn Goes After Reid
Cornyn rips Reid on Blago calls
A top Senate Republican is criticizing Harry Reid's involvement in the Illinois Senate seat scandal, accusing him of meddling in the state's affairs by pushing certain candidates in phone calls to Gov. Rod Blagojevich.

Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Reid "has led the charge to deny the people of Illinois a voice" in the process. To be sure, Republicans like Cornyn would rather see a special election in Illinois because it would give the GOP a shot at capturing the seat.

Given the state of our economy, you'd think the fools on the Hill would quit their childish bickering and get to work cleaning up the messes left by BushCo.  Apparently, they have bigger fish to fry.

Heh . . . (4.00 / 2)
Sen. John Cornyn of Texas, chairman of the National Republican Senatorial Committee, said Reid "has led the charge to deny the people of Illinois a voice" in the process.

lol!~ yeah, I bet Cornyn has major concerns about the voices of the people in Ill.

I agree. Could we get some adults please . . .

Hey! Don't they go back to work next week? Aka, maybe Hillary and some others concerned with working, can get things going?

Reid is looking embarrassingly incompetent (4.00 / 2)
nothing wrong with Reid making that private call to Blago a month ago, and JJJr's weak reelection prospects are a legitimate concern for a majority leader to voice to gov. Blago. But this public fight trying to block Burress looks sloppy and weak.

Just embarrassing, let's hope it passes soon.

increasingly incompetent -- (4.00 / 1)

and I'm sick of wimpy-sounding Democrats like Reid. Even when he tries to talk tough, he sounds like a wimp.

The senate Dems stupidly took the bait on the Illinois gov's replacement appointment, and now have a dragged out mess on their hands -- maybe to the supreme court.  Reid would have been smart to just go with the appointment, a man who is qualified and has done nothing untoward himself.

and Reid is contradicting himself -- saying the peoplke should decide, all the while calling the governors telling them who to pick.

Blago is actually looking gutsy by comparison (0.00 / 0)
This makes it look like Blago can perform under fire.

The Blago critics (4.00 / 2)
do not appear to be any more savory than Blago.  But then, they are all Democrats er, I mean the new kind, O-democrats.

Clowns (0.00 / 0)
Who made Reid a king maker? He is the majority leader and nothing else. His intervention, though legal, is improper, misplaced and arrogant. By and large, during the Bush orgy, Reid has earned, with distinctions, the title of clown.

The Republican just fail to grasp the role they are supposed to play in the Obama dream come true. Cronyn and his friends are supposed to bipartisan, postpartisana, uber-partisan, ultra bi-post-uber partisans. Somehow they continue to be the Hezbollah of American politics.

reid was on the Sunday's this morning (4.00 / 1)
basically saying that the Congress gets to make up their appointment rules as they go along.  he didn't say outright that he wouldn't allow B's appointment to sit in the Senate but he kept saying that B was guilty of corruption (without a trial) so he should step down and quit embarrassing them (because they obviously can handle that all on their own).

He also said that B was making all that stuff up about the calls to B about Jesse Jr.  He better hope that their isn't anything on tape.  The longer this goes on the more I am convinced that this is a coup by the DNC leadership because B wouldn't play by their rules.  Their rules, not the law, which they obviously don't think applies to the senate.

Once again the DNC has managed to get control of both Congress and the White House and they are blowing it out of the starting gate with cronyism and in-fighting.  It's only a matter of time before they publicly turn on Obama and the Repugs run amok.  all they need is someone savvy and ruthless like Gingrinch to jump in and take advantage.

Well, Reid has another thing coming (0.00 / 0)
Because under Powell v. McCormack, the Senate can't refuse to seat Burris unless he fails to qualify according to the requirements set out in the Constitution (30 years old, U.S. citizen for at least 9 years, resident of IL).

It's ironic that this issue is the one Reid is choosing to take a stand on, having failed to lead or take a stand on any other political issue of importance since he became ML.

It's just one more part in the pattern of Democrats having joined an oligarchic elite, not giving a d*mn about rules or the desires of the voters, in image as well as actuality. Gaming the primaries, pushing an unqualified Caroline Kennedy on NY, and now this.

let's not forget... (0.00 / 0)
Reid called Gov. Patterson and urged him to appoint CK to Hillary's seat, saying "She would be perfect"!

So am I!!! :)

Totally OT I know but (4.00 / 1)

Karma, baby , karma!

If you are a bad person (4.00 / 1)

'Not the Judas Richardson I knew' (0.00 / 0)
how's that stellar vetting process - if they put Judas through the same rigor they made the Clintons go through, would this have happened?
