To eliminate sexism we must first understand how it permeates our society

by: Alegre

Sun Jan 11, 2009 at 22:18:22 PM EST

Pat Bakalian is one of Hillary's delegates and a founder of the Campaign for Gender Equality.  She forwarded the following to me for inclusion on our site.

Thank you for the post "If we don't stand up for ourselves...." I have been a long time political activist and feminist. Yes, I said feminist and proud of it. I know that with some people that is not a good word but here is what it means to me very simply - anyone (male or female) who believes in the equality of men and women.

Last month I had lunch with Professor Bettina Aptheker. She is the head of the Women's Studies (or here we call it Feminist Studies) department at the University of California, Santa Cruz (UCSC). We had a great time talking about what she was doing and what I was doing as the founder of the Campaign for Gender Equality (www.campaignforgenderequality.org). This was a match made in heaven because the Campaign for Gender Equality is working to educate, mobilize and unite people in order to eliminate sexism in this country and Bettina has just released a very important educational tool.

Alegre :: To eliminate sexism we must first understand how it permeates our society
She has been teaching "Introduction to Feminisms" at UCSC for the last 24 years and now has all her classes on DVD's for everyone to see. Well of course I immediately ordered myself a set - 17-DVD's for just $20.....such a deal! Over the holidays I watched all of them...sometimes while doing other things because you know us women have to and know how to milti-task. I came away more knowledgeable and able to see the whole picture. I was reenergized and felt empowered not at all angry at what I was learning. Yes, since I am older, I knew a lot of what she was talking about but being able to understand gender inequality, how far we have come in the last 40 years but how far we still need to go gave me a great sense of peace.

Bettina's "Introduction to Feminisms" places women's experiences at the center and emphasizes the diversity of women's lives. She talks about everything from unlearning racism, to loving ourselves, to women, immigration and the global economy, to women and body image, to the politics of rape and how they all interrelate with each other. She is engaging, tells stories and covers sexism, racism and homophobia and how they are connected and contribute to gender inequality in this country and around the world.

I have been talking to many people about Bettina's DVD's and a couple of people have suggested that we have "Watch Parties" and talk about it afterwards. This reminded me of the "Conscious Raising" groups for the 60's and 70's. I think that it is a great idea because for us to eliminate sexism we must first understand it in a holistic way and how it permeates our society.

There is a lot of information out there but it is not always available and easy to understand. This might be something that you can share with your daughters (and son's). The Campaign for Gender Equality has partnered with Professor Bettina Aptheker to spread the word. The DVD set is available at: www.introtofem.org. I hope that you will order it, hold "Watch Parties" and talk about what you can do.

Please pass this on to others and join us by signing up for our newsletter at www.campaignforgenderequality.org.

These Watch Parties Sound Like a Great Idea (4.00 / 1)
We could use these to start up new Women's Groups like the days of old.  Where women get together for conciousness raising sessions, and support each other as we stand up to the sexism in our day to day lives.

I haven't seen these videos yet but I'm going to order a set and check them out.

It's great to read this post (0.00 / 0)
and to see the correct term "feminism(s)" used.  One of the difficulties we face in forming a collective "we" as women is that each woman views the world through different experiences.  Sometimes those experiences are in conflict, and we have to recognize those tensions if we are going to work together for political power.   These DVD "Watch Parties" sound like a great way for women to get together and start the conversations going.

I thought that was a typo at first Izarradar, and really had to fight my proof-reading instincts.

Could you expand on this a bit - why is it proper to ad the "s" at the end of the word?  What's behind that and how do you think it is that we dropped that from the word over the years?

Plenty!  I checked out your link, Izarradar and found a plethora of examples of how the women's movement for equality has been fractured into tiny bits of factions, many at war with each other.

So, on the huge agenda items such as elimination of sexism and misogyny there is no coming together with the strength needed. Our culture that is determined to keep women "in their place" has used divide and conquer as usual to separate and dissipate our movement.

I have never liked being called a feminist - I'm a woman.  I've never seen or heard the term masculinist - NO!  Men remain men and are mostly allowed to have differences from each other; women are not.

Feminine describes what our society tries to forced all women into being.  Trouble is, we do not all fit in that frilly, polite, empty headed box.  We, like men, have differences from each other.  We are each unique and many of us reject a lable that characterizes our actions or values.

Back in the day when we were meeting in watch parties, we used the words woman's groups to describe ourselves and we became aware of the wonderful variety of womanness.

"I am woman, hear me roar!"  Can you sing "I'm a feminist, hear me roar" without laughing?

There was a natural explosion of material and things to talk about (0.00 / 0)
in the 70s, after women keeping so much inside for so long.  I can remember when Our Bodies, Our Selves was published.  As much as it is just a common ordinary book leaning to the feminist side according to today's standards, it was a daring project at that time.  I read memories of  it, by at least one person involved in it just about a year or so again.  They had difficulty even getting some book stores to carry it.  I was young when that book came out, probably about 15 or at least in my early teens.  I remember seeing a picture in there of a woman lying naked on the floor in a pool of blood, dead as a result of an illegal abortion.  Having not been aware of a lot of things about abortion, that picture helped form my lifelong beliefs about women and feminism.  I don't know what is available today that would bring information like that to a young girl's world.

Maybe that shows some progress, though, that the subject is so open that it is not a risky proposition to publish something as mild as OBOS, but at the same time when something gets so commonplace and non shocking, people loose interest and take it for granted.  Just like the young women are doing today.  They don't recognize sexism anymore, because the subject has been left unattended in comparison to the past for so long.

I remember that book. Sadly, I don't think all that much has changed since that book came out.  Well things might have changed for a while, but the pendulum seems to be swinging back the other way.  Library filters on public computers screen out any sites with words like "breast" in them.  Women can't even look up information on breast cancer for crying out loud.

And god(dess) help you if you want to nurse your newborn in public.

It's weird how our society views breasts.  Men are obsessed with them but at the same time, we're forbidden to talk about or see them in public.  They're just part of our anatomy and they serve a magical purpose by giving life to our babies - how did they become so dirty?

I'm pretty sure I have a later edition of that book on our bookshelves here at home.  I wouldn't be surprised if the book was still in print.
