Newsweek Poll: FISA Fallout for Obama

by: campskunk

Sat Jul 12, 2008 at 02:13:05 AM EDT

Well, even Matt Stoller's having a hard time not getting nervous about the latest Newsweek poll.  Although it's obvious that a lot of the swing is statistical noise, going from a 15 point lead down to a 3 point lead in two weeks is... cause for concern, shall we say.

What do the crosstabs say? Let's ask Matt.

The most striking piece of data though is that 53% of registered voters think that he has changed his position on key policy issues to try to gain political advantage since becoming the nominee.

That is stunning.  Over half of the public, though perhaps has not heard of the FISA fight specifically, believes he shifts positions for political advantage.  And why shouldn't they?  He did.  The drop was substantially concentrated among younger voters between the ages of 18-39 and independents.  Democrats and Hillary Clinton supporters maintained the same level of support for Obama.

So the bottom fell out in two groups- independents and younger voters. The voters identifying as Democrats, having gotten used to this drill with Kerry four years ago, are hanging in there, but the swing voters swung to McCain.

It turns out hard core activists still support Obama (though they perhaps aren't giving anymore), it's the independents that don't.

Matt says he still thinks Obama will win, but...

Still, I will say that Obama better win this election or else he'll be the most hated Democrat ever.

Hmmm. I thought anxiety was reduced by expectation of a favorable outcome. Take deep breaths, Matt.

Matt's emphasizing that by defunding the outside groups like MoveOn, that means Obama gets the credit - or the blame - depending on the outcome. And then Matt commits truth... he says it's possible for Obama to lose the general election.

The funniest part is this:

Obama can clearly recover and recover quite easily.  He can come back from his trip to Iraq with Chuck Hagel and announce some progressive blah blah on gas prices and Iraq, and he'll easily be the belle of the ball again.  Progressives, as the primary showed, are cheap dates, though we're getting more expensive as we keep getting lied to.

Too late for that, Matt. They're talking about you all over town ;-)

"progressives?" (0.00 / 0)
I've started calling the Matts of the world "so-called liberals."

What is this, late night CampSkunk? ;)

thanks, campie!! (0.00 / 0)
pretty funny.  Matt must be really p---sed inside.

Progressives my fat backside! (0.00 / 0)
These Obamacrats are Fauxgressives.

A "real" progressive doesn't abandon their core issues just to support a candidate. Any candidate.

A "real" progressive doesn't worship at the alter of some politician when said politician abandons all pretense of supporting the issues of the Progressives community.

A "real" progressive doesn't mock working class people or older voters or women voters. A real "smart" politician doesn't do that either.

The rise and inevitable fall of the Obamacrats is doing the same kind of damage to the Democratic Party that neo-cons and the Religious Right did to the Republican Party.

I know that it's the "in" thing to portray ALL Republicans/Conservatives as Rat-fuckers and other classy titles but there was a time in the not to distant past when many of their policies were ones that I, as a lifelong liberal believed in. Fiscal responsibility is one that comes to mind.

Matt and his ilk cannot see, because they didn't want to see, that Dean, Brazile, Pelosi and Obama are doing the same damage to "our" party as DeLay, Ginrich and Bush/Cheney did to the Republican brand.

There are not many "real" Democrats in the Senate anymore. 25 REAL Democrats and 1 Independent voted AGAINST the FISA bill. They are Democrats. All the other so-called Democrats and all the Republicans in the Senate voted to violate their oath of office and NOT uphold the constitution.

Obama progressive? His supporters progressives? Okay, I don't get the joke, what's the punch line?

kMarge, you have really been on a roll recently (0.00 / 0)
with some outstanding comments. I wish I could say you took the words right out of my mouth, but your words are more cogent than mine.

"Matt and his ilk cannot see, because they didn't want to see, that Dean, Brazile, Pelosi and Obama are doing the same damage to "our" party as DeLay, Ginrich and Bush/Cheney did to the Republican brand."

That has to be the comment of the year. I would simply add that the Obama-DNC team are making sure that this year we are only being offered two Republican candidates. Real Democrats need not apply.

You got that right grayslady. There are so many of under the damn bus now that we should get our own zip code.

You are so correct about 'real progressives' (0.00 / 0)
So many of us here spent lots of time rah rahing the so-called progressive blogs only to find the hypocrisy of the blog boys was just gang mentality of the worse kind.
At least we saw the light truth etc., be it because of age and reason. The big difference is some of us actually listen and the young not so much or do it very selectively..ooh that also sounds like the DNC..pun intended.

you said it, kenoshaMarge. (0.00 / 0)
Dean, Brazile, Pelosi and Obama are doing damage to our party, and, as with the Gingrich revolution, the voters are smarter than the politicians think they are.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

I loved the ending!!! (0.00 / 0)

The word of the day today was (0.00 / 0)
'puerile' and that brougt me to thinking about Matt, the other Matt, Kos, even Duncan.  They've bought into the belief that being smart means they're mature.  Sort of like the guy they're backing.  Does adolescence now end at 37?  Here's some more of the same old cliques that gave us 1.0:

I can't even follow what they're talking about.  It must be my age.  But after Josh insulting someone like me who contributed to the development of his site, who gives a shit what they're saying.

Josh Marshall (I assume that's the Josh you mean) (0.00 / 0)
has really, really disappointed me in the last year or so.  I was a big supporter when he was just getting started.  I sent him $$$ and did a lot of cheerleading for him.

His uncritical embrace of Obama and sour attitude towards Clinton
make him just another member of the Blogger Boys Club.

[ Parent ]
Yea, it was Josh Marshall.... (0.00 / 0)
and I was exchanging emails with the guy, telling him why I voted in our primary for Clinton while he was writing his famous "Queen of Pennsylvania" post.  And he knew I had contributed to his site twice.  F#$k him and the horse he rode in on!

[ Parent ]
Same here! (0.00 / 0)
After one of his clueless posts about Clinton, I wrote him about why I was supporting her in the primary.   He wrote back very cordially but didn't acknowledge any of my points.  I don't give him money any more and only visit the site to see what topics are  front-paged.

Bye, Josh
Bye, Markos
Bye, Duncan
Bye, Arianna
Bye, Aravosis

Keep (0.00 / 0)
it coming! Falling in the polls, bone-headed flip-flopping, NASCAR, Gate-gate, fundraising going down the tubes (while Puma is busy erasing Hillary's debt :) ) my my my, seems as if perhaps the golden idol is realy just plated nickel and he is tarnishing at a rapid rate.

The supers can still salvage this election!

Fallout (0.00 / 0)
How can they continue to insist he is a "new kind of candidate"?  The excuses they make on his behalf are laughable.   The man is nothing more than a phony and anyone still taking him seriously, MSM included, are doing the country great harm.

hopefully, at some point their self-respect will return. (0.00 / 0)
that's the nice thing about being a hillary supporter... she kept her promise.

if you stand for me, i'll stand up for you every day as your president.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
You take him seriously at this (0.00 / 0)
time for only two reasons that I can see:

1. You were bamboozled into a Cult Of Personality and are now riding the Band Wagon to the end of the line no matter where it's headed or how it's getting there.

2. Being an Obama supporter is cool. Serious is for old ladies, boring working types and racists.

Course I could be wrong and they might have a 3rd reason. But I'm not sure if chronic Political Stupidity is a reason or a disease.

[ Parent ]
There should be more than a fallout... (0.00 / 0)
There should be a drop into a bottomless pit! A vote for the odious FISA bill was an attack on the constitution. Any liberal that says this isn't a deal breaker for them has chosen party over country. Period.

Where are all the Fauxgressives that were boo-hooing about Bush treating the constitution as just another piece of paper? Frakking hypocrites the lot of them!
