The Honeymoon is Over

by: owl06

Sat Jul 12, 2008 at 20:47:04 PM EDT

Freshman Senator and prospective Democratic nominee Barack Obama's lead over John McCain has dissolved. Obama now ties McCain in Saturday's Rasmussen Reports daily Presidential Tracking Poll and has higher negatives. His media-driven honeymoon is over, and the American public doesn't believe in Obama's "change."

owl06 :: The Honeymoon is Over
The pertinent passage:
McCain is now viewed favorably by 56% of voters, Obama by 54%. Obama receives unfavorable reviews from 44% of voters while McCain is viewed unfavorably by 41%. McCain earns favorable ratings from 32% of Democrats while Obama is viewed favorably by 22% of Republicans. Among unaffiliated voters, McCain is viewed favorably by 58%, Obama by 54%.

Obama was effectively marketed as a transcendent figure that would rise above politics as usual and "change" everything; he tapped into something powerful. He has since shown himself to be a typical politician with a willingness to sacrifice core democratic principles in order to appear as a moderate.

Take his carefully crafted image away, and what are we left with? A facsimile of John Kerry - a wavering candidate that is disliked by middle America, and whom unlike Kerry, lacks experience and has flimsy credentials to be commander in chief.

'Community organizer' does not cut it, and his record in the IL legislature (a part time job) is less than stellar. Has anyone even asked Senator Obama about why he killed a GLBT hate crimes bill yet?

Keep in mind folks, that this contest has come to a draw before the Republican attacks have gotten into full swing, and they have plenty more to work with. Every indication is pointing toward November 2008 being an absolute bloodbath.

Barack Obama will only have himself to blame for costing the Democratic party the White House.

So Long Democrat's Advantage (4.00 / 7)
Republican got themselves exactly where they need to be.  Because Democrat nominated an unelectable, unqualified, illegitimate candidate, Republican have a winning chance for the election.    They have neutralized the Bush's impact.

DNC is so so so STUPID!

okay, this is scary (4.00 / 7)
How many times does someone have to be right, or in other words, how dumb are our party leaders, and why do regular people know more than they? I knew there were no WMD, HIllary knew, but not John Edwards, John Kerry, or Barack Obama, who said he thought there were WMD but the war was stupid anyway and that's why he opposed it.

Here at Al's place, previously at Hillary place and at the so called progressive blogs we've been calling it since the first debate.  We didn't think Barack was new politics then and we thought that he and McCain would be after the exact same group of independents, who had a hard time deciding between the two of them even in the primary.

We thought Barack should come clean with his specific policies before the nom got decided by Howard and Donna, among other so called leaders, in his favor, so we could pick the one that could win.  We saw this coming and we said so.

Hillary was smeared for being specific, and everything Barack wrongly accused her of, to cheers while he brushed the dandruff off his shoulders, is now admitted, and by MSN go figure, only it's about him.

Do we have anyone of courage to take this 'decision' back and let the convention delegates choose our candidate? or are we destined to mediocrity and stuck with the candidate that scares our fearless leaders the least.

Hillary - alternative energy

delegates are herd animals. (4.00 / 1)
none of them have much individual initiative, but they all fear being cut off from the main mass. of course, they also stampede easily - that's what obama did on june 3. he got the delegates by telling the delegates he had the delegates. rock soup.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

ah (0.00 / 0)
but not all of them. what does that say?

well, damn. (4.00 / 6)
the clock struck twelve, and he turned back into a regular chicago politician right before our eyes.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

You give me a chuckle (4.00 / 2)
Campskunk, you give me a chuckle everyday.  The visual of Obama in his yellow Walt Disney Cinderella gown standing next to his pumpkin carriage, and Howard Dean as his fairy godmother.  Now whose Prince Charming, that's what I want to know?

[ Parent ]
Yet it will be all Hillary's fault. (4.00 / 5)
But I think you can blame it on the idealism of stary eyed youth who insisted on not listening to the words of the decaying, but not actually dead, older generation who have seen this all before.  And then there is the totally screwed up Democratic National Committee and the unbelievable patchwork system of nomination accross the country that allows the republicans and independents to elect the Democrat's nominee.

Spot on (4.00 / 3)
But we're the 'fringe' according to Daily Kos.

Daily Kos (4.00 / 4)
Has never been the mainstream. It is itself the fringe.

[ Parent ]
Says you. (4.00 / 3)
It's just because you're so old, and uncool, that you think that way.

[ Parent ]
Compared to the boppers on DK? (4.00 / 2)

[ Parent ]
well, you hang out with all us old people. (0.00 / 0)
...maybe it's contagious.

one of my 26 year old co-workers just bought a house, and was talking about puttering around decorating it, and going to bed before midnight. i told her i wanted to remember her like she was... young and irresponsible and partying every night, and it was depressing to see her in her current dilapidated state.

Maybe (4.00 / 2)
because I really am old, I never was on the Honeymoon to begin with. I never really did "idolize" politicians anyway. Idolizing anyone that has to lie for a living seems rather dim to me and always has.

Some politicians are worthy of our respect. They do what they must do to get anything done. But those worthy of respect stick to what they believe in. Or if after a period of time they have come to believe that something they once thought a good idea is not so good, good for them. Honest reflection is a good thing.

Flip-flopping and changing positions to pander to voters is not. And the more people see of the "One", the less there is to like.

Oprah isn't all that good at choosing her viewers authors for them. Perhaps she should just stick to running her little empire and telling people how to lose weight. That seems to have worked so well for her. Well she's really rich anyway.

I wanted to idolize Obama 18 months ago (4.00 / 1)
when all the hype started.  But every time I saw him, he just seemed so uninteresting, shallow.  Maybe its just because I'm really old too.

[ Parent ]
Maybe not (4.00 / 2)
Maybe it's because you wanted substance instead of silly glam crap and issues instead of hopey, changey b.s. Not cool to the hip crowd but important if you care about things like your country and your party. Little stuff like that.

[ Parent ]
I think you're right (4.00 / 1)
Hillary won me over by consistently out-debating Obama.
