Hillary and Patty Murray tell HHS: "Hands Off Our Family Planning!"

by: campskunk

Apparently, life now begins BEFORE conception... Bush administration officials are torturing the English language again to construct new restrictions on access to contraceptives by classifying them as "abortion". Hillary quickly called bullshit on these dying gasps of the Bush administration's war on womens' reproductive freedom. These are the same clowns who held up over-the-counter Plan B contraception for three years until Hillary got ugly with them. Here is the press release from Hillary's Senate webpage:

Senators Clinton and Murray Call on HHS to Stop Plans to Obstruct Family Planning Services

Washington, DC - U.S. Senators Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-NY) and Patty Murray (D-WA) today called on the Secretary of Health and Human Services to stop misguided plans to put in place new obstacles for women accessing family planning services. This proposed rule change is a poorly-veiled attempt to roll-back women's health care options before the current Administration leaves office.

In a letter to Secretary Michael Leavitt, Senators Clinton and Murray underscored that new planned regulations will increase barriers to obtaining health care services, while weakening health care providers' ability to obtain funding and provide services.

"It is outrageous that the Bush administration is once again putting ideology over women's health. Instead of undercutting access to contraception and family planning services, the Bush Administration should put prevention first," said Senator Clinton.

The rest of the press release after the jump...

campskunk :: Hillary and Patty Murray tell HHS: "Hands Off Our Family Planning!"
" On the first day of his administration, the President reinstated the Mexico City global gag clause, a harsh, anti-family planning policy that hurt the world's poorest women and children. Now, on his way out the door it appears that he is trying to limit women's health care options here at home," Murray said. "This misguided attempt to restrict health care services and limit access to contraceptives defeats our common goal of reducing the number of abortions in this country."

Senators Clinton and Murray have worked tirelessly to stop efforts by the Bush Administration to put in place ideological barriers to contraception. Senators Clinton and Murray successfully led the fight to secure an administration decision on the over-the-counter sale of Plan B emergency contraception after more than three years of Administration delay.

text of the letter follows...

Secretary Michael O. Leavitt
The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services
200 Independence Avenue, S.W.
Washington, D.C. 20201

Dear Mr. Secretary:

It has come to our attention that the Department of Health and Human Services may be preparing draft regulations that would create new obstacles for women seeking contraceptive services.

One of the most troubling aspects of the proposed rules is the overly-broad definition of "abortion." This definition would allow health-care corporations or individuals to classify many common forms of contraception - including the birth control pill, emergency contraception and IUDs - "abortions" and therefore to refuse to provide contraception to women who need it.

As a consequence, these draft regulations could disrupt state laws securing women's access to birth control. They could jeopardize federal programs like Medicaid and Title X that provide family-planning services to millions of women. They could even undermine state laws that ensure survivors of sexual assault and rape receive emergency contraception in hospital emergency rooms.

We strongly urge you to reconsider these regulations before they are released. We are extremely concerned by this proposal's potential to affect millions of women's reproductive health.

Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Sincerely yours,

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton
Senator Patty Murray

Note the absence of any "in consultation with her pastor" or "having a legitimate physical health problem, not just feeling blue" evangelical appeasement language. Rights are rights; you don't need a lot of words to explain them.

p.s. How do you consult with your pastor if you're Catholic? That always bothered me. I mean, what the hell do you expect your priest to say????

Good for Clinton, Murray.

I don't know why Hillary has to be such a party pooper (0.00 / 0)
Doesn't she know that W only has a few months to shore up his image for history?  Leave him alone already so he can play with the Constitution on our lives.

Wow! Great catch, campskunk. (0.00 / 0)
I wish Hillary and Patty would call a press conference on this. We need to give this news the widest circulation possible. Also, I'd love to see what "his preciousness" would say in response.

Well, I think he's pretty much given up on doing his job as a senator, (0.00 / 0)
since you'd have to be actually reading the stuff that comes across your desk if you want know what's going on. That's why I want Hillary and Patty to hold a press conference. I want to see the egg all over his face as he tries to respond after all his evangelical pandering.

Come on, SDs: there's still time to rectify a horrible mistake! If you're a woman SD, no excuse not to support Hillary.

For pity's sake, what the hell century are we in again? I REMEMBER being denied birth control by the Ob/Gyn who delivered my first. Long story short- I was told I was a horrible daughter for getting preganant AND I had hurt my mother AND I was a sinner AND I was gonna die and go to hell- yup all that by a DOCTOR!!!! His idea was that I was to go back to being a good girl and stop all that and if I continued on the path to hell, I deserved what I got.
Yup, you read me right- a DOCTOR told me that! Thirty six oh so short years ago.
Same doctor that did my Mom's bladder suspension, said bladder muscles having been destroyed by bearing 7 live children out of 8 that I know of (though there are hints of back alley stuff)pregnancies.

Thank God for Hillary and Patty!

Bush needs to keep his damn laws off my daughter's body! And where is our so precious selectee on this??? Probably on the keep women barefoot, pregnant and therefore under control crowd.

Time to stock up on pennyroyal.

Barack says (0.00 / 0)
he's better on women's issues than Hillary.  It's time for him to match her and join her.  If he's too busy running against John McCain, then he needs to admit he hasn't the time or the energy to deal with women's reproductive rights and admit he isn't the best on women's reproductive rights. He says he says the truth, even when it isn't what he wants to say, no that's not it, what we want to hear, oh, damn, I'm all mixed up, what is it he said?
