$22.5 Million for the Party, $18 Million for Obama

Let's see, things are looking up. The DNC raised $22.5 million in June, so we ought to be getting right to work on that 50 state strategy, grow-the-party, downticket support stuff, right?

Wrong.

Marc Ambinder has news today that the DNC will put $18 million into a fund to help The One™.

The Democratic National Committee has set up an independent committee to fund television advertisements in the service of electing Barack Obama, Democrats familiar with the committee said. An "independent expenditure" committee can't coordinate with Obama's campaign.

There had been debate about whether the DNC would set up an IE because Obama has railed against so-called independent groups spending in an election.

The AP reports that Jonathan Prince, a veteran of extra-party efforts like these and a former deputy campaign manager for John Edwards, plans to spend at least $18 million outside the coordination limits.

So it might be better to think of gross and net fundraising for the DNC from now on. The overhead is pretty steep if you're the party of The One™. That's why I stopped contributing to the DNC's Democracy Bond program - the reason they gave me when it started (to grow the party, 50 state strategy, blah blah blah) changed abruptly and without notice. I got a refund.  Y'all do what you want, but if you're giving to the party, you might as well be making your checks out to The One™.

Oh, for the record, Obama is opposed to outside spending groups such as the one the DNC is setting up.

Who would you suppose (0.00 / 0)
donated the 22 mill to the DNC?  My bet is maxed out Obama backers.  The DNC is broke.  That's why they had to give up the down-ticket apparatus in favor of the Obama-centric one.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

Well, looks like they don't care whether Hillary's name is put into (0.00 / 0)
nomination or not. They've already selected our candidate for us. So much for Democracy. I think this whole thing is a huge public relations effort to make sure Hillary can't make a comeback, or at least to have it perceived that way.

I predict a law suit (0.00 / 0)
With the DNC move to Chicago, there is no way they can ever again argue they are not coordinating. Some enterprising person with access to a lawyer and capital to fight with ought to consider taking a legal look-see at this one.

I'm a Stantonian Democrat.

now THAT is an interesting link. (0.00 / 0)
i wouldn't put it past obama- they know a lot of bookkeeping tricks in chicago. time will tell. i think axelrove's tacit admission that their donor base is shrinking by a major amount is easily verifiable when we can look at the FEC filings, but that won't be for a while.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Democrat Primary Reform (0.00 / 0)
Greenconsciousness, on July 19th, 2008 at 7:26 am Said:
i am disappointed in PUMA as well. Mark at democrat in exile
http://www.democratinexile.com/
has been doing brilliant work on democrat primary reform and PUMA radio won't interview him and will not post about it on their blogs.

I can never get anyone at PUMA PAC to respond so now I am asking you to help us Democrats organize to force congressional hearings on Dem primary reform. PUMA Democrats Hillary supporters including Mark, invited to speak at said hearings.

Mark has done an analysis of the various plans offered by Democrats as appeasement without real change and he has profiled the Dem leadership's sham legislation on his blog.

These are the main points of reform we want included in democrat primary reform.

No reform is complete unless:
caucuses are eliminated,
republican crossover voting is eliminated,
the (super) delegate system is eliminated and
every vote counts, the convention delegates voting for the candidate who won the popular vote in their state by a majority of the votes counted.

I want Mark interviewed on PUMA radio to discuss the primary reform PUMA demands.

There is no other segment of PUMA working on primary reform that we can find.

It is a shame because primary reform would engage democrats. Right now it is clear that as democrats drop away only McCain supporters remain in PUMA. The media will soon expose that fact. The PUMA actions to date have lacked substance and been mainly designed to generate publicity. They have failed to do so because the actions are seen as stunts lacking power.

Mark is organizing calls to Sen. Feinstein reminding her of her promise to hold hearings on why the rank and file are calling the primaries corrupted. Now that the nomination for her man is fixed she refuses to hold the hearings.

A PUMA campaign for primary reform hearings would lend substance to the organization. There could be a series of actions targeting the democratic party bosses, demanding hearings, holding mock hearings, a petition, etc, that would gain the media attention that the PUMA elite crave and legitimize the organization.

But PUMA is drunk on their early success and foolish. So be it.

Ha! (0.00 / 0)
Wait there's a whole Democratic Party?  And other candidates running for office?  Next you'll tell me there are other branches of Government other than the President's!  ;-)

Amazing, isn't it though?  I remember being foolishly optimistic that Chair Dean's talk of 50 state strategy really was a long term goal that would help strengthen the party nation-wide long term at all levels.  And not just words to kill time between attempting to elect Democratic Presidents.

Silly me.
