Daschle beds down with the enemies of health care reform

by: Alegre

Wed Jun 17, 2009 at 20:29:59 PM EDT

Well look at that... Tom Daschle's joining forces with Bob Dole and Howard Baker to keep a public plan out of the health care reform package.  Can't say's I'm surprised - you?

Daschle Folds on Federal Public Health Care Plan
Tom Daschle, Howard Baker, and Bob Dole, offered their solution today to the biggest obstacle to achieving health care reform -- a public option. ...

In a blow to President Obama and many of his Democratic allies in the health care fight, the plan recommends that there be no federal public option, but rather state or regional public-sponsored networks that would compete with private health plans, according to the summary released today by the Bipartisan Policy Center.

"If you want to stop this thing dead in its tracks, or dead on arrival, in my view you put the public plan in it," Dole said when asked whether there were any non-negotiables to deal with when drafting the bipartisan recommendations.

First of all, let's get one thing straight... the public option is not the biggest obstacle to achieving health care reform.  Republicans are.  So (apparently) are some Democrats.

Now we've all heard about Bill Kristol's memo from December, 1993, advising Republicans to scuttle the reform effort so they could deny Bill (and Hillary) a big win.  Bob Dole played a huge role in making sure the status quo survived.  He had plans to run for Bill's job after all so he wasn't about to help him on this.

(Come to think of it - so did Newt Gingrich and we're suddenly seeing his mug on the TeeVee again.  Coincidence?  I think not.  But that's another story...)

So now we have another Democrat in the White House trying to push reform.  Tom Daschle - who was elected Democratic Senate Majority Leader  in 1994 and had to deal with Dole in the last effort to get this done - is now working hand in glove with the guy who blocked efforts 15 years ago.

Dole and Daschle go on to note that for a reform proposal to be seen as "truly bi-partisan", it must attract at least 20 Republican votes.  What they don't seem to get is that we don't need a bi-partisan bill here.  Democrats control the House, the Senate and the White House.  There's absolutely no excuse for them to fail in getting at least a public option into a reform package.  This is the kind of thing we elected them to do - health care reform.  It's what people have said they wanted in poll after poll after poll.  If the Democrats in Congress fail to push for a public option and push it hard - and if the WH fails to demand it - then it's time we started asking the obvious question...

What in the hell did we elect all of those Democrats for last November?

This should be a slam dunk dammit.  We don't need high-profile Democrats bedding down with Republicans to scuttle reform.  We need them to grow a spine and get this thing done and done right.

Meanwhile, all I can say is thank **** Daschle's not head of HHS right now.  He's selling us out before we even have a bill on the table.   But then from what I've been reading in the last day or two, Sebelius isn't doing much better by us on this issue, despite her promise to McCain during her confirmation hearings.

I'm getting mighty tired (4.00 / 2)
of telling people "I told you so".  We knew Daschle was bad news for reform when his name was put up to head HHS - this just confirms everything.

Exactly right (4.00 / 2)
That's the problem - we have NO LEADERSHIP on this!

Where's Reid?

Where's the WH?

Dammit this should be a slam dunk - not only do we have control of Congress AND the WH but we saw this happen in the early 90s dammit.

Didn't we learn anything from the last effort?!?!!??!

You need leaders to have leadership. (4.00 / 4)
Seriously - only HRC is leading.  These rest of the bunch are slackers.

Forget Daschle (4.00 / 2)
Daschle is way behind the curve, Obama has already sold out to "Big Med" and "Big Pharma".

""Today, on NPR, Secretary Sebelius said that single payer is not only 'off the table' but that the President is considering measures to make sure it does not happen now or ever."

Obama Sells Out (4.00 / 3)
I forgot to add, I would be hard to be more definitive than to say "it does not happen now or ever".  Obama's on a roll, Health care and Gays under the bus in one week!!!!  Jeebus what a nightmare.

Wow! (0.00 / 0)
This is incredible.  This is a huge deal O' would say that - but I'm not surprised.  I do consider it amoral, though, to NOT provide U.S. citizen with healthcare; either Single Payer or a Medicare-like Public Option.

Vindicated. I feel completely vindicated (4.00 / 5)
for arguing that Dashle was possibly the WORST for HHS, and Lord forbid, Health Czar.

Not that Sebelius is any better.  They both suck.  Obama sucks.  This health reform sham sucks.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

I think we should give up the dream of hope and change, and accept (4.00 / 3)
and deal with the fact that there is not going to be real change at all to "our" form of healthcare in our lifetimes,or we could get out in the streets and demand real reform like the Iranians.  Nah......

What a loser Daschle is.  I haven't forgiven him, yet, for rolling over for the republicans and handing the Senate to them, let alone for this.

Just read the new NBC/WSJ poll showing 76% (4.00 / 4)
76%!!!!!! of Americans want a public healthcare option.

When was the last time 76% of this country agreed on anything?

The fact that every Democrats in DC is not out screaming for national healthcare at the top of their lungs is a travesty.

These poeple are stupid.

Simply stupid.

They're not stupid (4.00 / 4)
They know where the money's coming from and they need lots of it to get re-elected.

Those SOBs are selling us out (again!) in the name of job security.

Disgusting!

Can we just gag Daschle? (4.00 / 3)
I mean really now. Or perhaps just stick an R after his name?

{stops before I put your blog in the "adult" content category because of language}

We all know where Obama is going to side on this . . .  and this was one of my worst fears. I had a tad bit of "hope" he might prove me wrong on some equal rights issues, but we're not even getting that. The Spotty B!tch in the Sky is growlin', spittin', pissed. Oh well, I guess we can thank our spotty stars he never ran as a committed Dem. Maybe a few will step up to the plate?

we should march on washington for this (4.00 / 3)
not much more important after all....

George Mitchell (0.00 / 0)
Democrats Tom Daschle and George Mitchell joined Republicans Bob Dole and Howard Baker yesterday "to release a $1.2 trillion proposal that would be fully paid for with a combination of spending cuts and tax increases."

Read "The Predator State," by James K. Galbraith. (4.00 / 1)
The money thrown at this issue is not the problem; it's the insurance agencies and their monopolistic attitude that's the problem.

Galbraith is a very well-respected economist who won't play anyone's politics, and he said the one-payer system is the only way to go before our economy outright collapses.

Public-option now!

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

[ Parent ]
Single-Payer NOW! (0.00 / 0)
I'm more than irritated that Dems didn't both to shoot for Single-Payer.   Americans want it.   Then they could have "settled" for a Medicare-like Public Option.   Looks like we will get neither.
