Hillary Speaks Out Against Energy Speculators

From Hillary's Senate webpage...

WASHINGTON, DC - Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton spoke today on the floor of the United States Senate in support of legislation to crack down on speculators who are contributing to the dramatic increases in energy prices. Senator Clinton urged her colleagues to support The Stop Excessive Energy Speculation Act to provide short term relief to Americans feeling the pain of rising fuel prices and also called for bold new steps to break the nation's dependence on fossil fuels and achieve long term energy independence based on clean, renewable alternative energy.

"I believe we can lower gas prices in the very near term by taking smart, practical, sensible steps to address rampant oil speculation," Senator Clinton said. "And let's lead our nation to embrace the great next American endeavor, a national effort to change the way we produce and use energy. It'll serve our economy. It will strengthen our security. It will bring us together as a nation."

Senator Clinton criticized the idea that additional off-shore drilling would provide any substantive solutions for America's short or long term energy challenges.

"Drilling is the wrong answer. It will do nothing right now. It is literally a Shell game, or an Exxon Mobile game. It's designed to serve the political interests of vulnerable Republicans and the financial interests of profit-rich oil companies. Average Americans will not see a dime," Senator Clinton said. "The oil companies say, 'Drill,' and the President and the Vice President say, 'How deep?' I don't think that's the smartest, most effective answer."

Senator Clinton outlined her proposal to create a Strategic Energy Fund to jumpstart research and investment in clean energy technologies to promote job growth, energy independence and a cleaner environment. She also underscored her support for providing energy relief to low-income families in New York and across the country. Senator Clinton has long been an advocate of fully funding the Low-Income Home Energy Assistance Program (LIHEAP).

Senator Clinton has previously cosponsored the Petroleum Consumer Price Gouging Protection Act and the Close the Enron Loophole Act, which would protect consumers from unscrupulous energy profiteers and increase transparency in the retail and wholesale markets.

yeah, remember the Enron speculators? (0.00 / 0)
they were cackling away about running up the electrical rates for california. no real market reason for the prices to be so high - they just wanted to do it. and they were laughing about the poor people who were getting screwed.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

I was here, PG&E were caving, raising prices like there was no tomorrow, and no penalty for those crooks.  Did you read my Barack joke, how many Baracks does it take to screw a Barack?  answer:: only Barack screws Barack?

Trust Hillary to make sense. Why should we be enriching the already bloated oil companies? Not to mention what risks the drilling poses environmentally.

she has the strategic vision. (0.00 / 0)
And let's lead our nation to embrace the great next American endeavor, a national effort to change the way we produce and use energy. It'll serve our economy. It will strengthen our security. It will bring us together as a nation. And, Mr. President, we sorely need that.

her green energy initiatives in her policy proposals are what's needed - NOW. much of the wind and solar technology are coming from overseas - because we can't be bothered to manufacture it here. that's as dumb as not buying microsoft stock in 1980. you KNOW it's going to grow exponentially.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

I just listened to the full video (15 minutes) and it's a blockbuster speech (0.00 / 0)
As you say, it's the vision--the vision of a President, not just a senator. While one Democrat is making serious policy speeches, another is desperately trying to acquire the veneer of a world leader. Hillary is the true leader, and that's something we haven't seen in politics for decades.

and she stays upbeat, cheerful, she believes we can make a difference. She makes me believe with her. Keep up the work, Hillary, thank you.

What? There's a senate in session? No European vacation? (0.00 / 0)
Somehow I got distracted.

She gets it! (0.00 / 0)
Hillary is the only one that gets it.  BO doesn't gets anything.  McCain gets something, but not all.   Hillary gets everything.  She understands the issue from all angles.

I recommend (0.00 / 0)
Hillary keep doing what she's been doing, shining light on darkness, standing up for the people, it's not retro, it's change.  I'm so glad she's continuing to post this stuff.  I'd like more, and i'd like to hear from her think tank.

guys i have to disagree with everyone here.the cap on speculation is fine but we need to drill and drill now.its not only about lower prices its about giving away our enconomy.i live in az and run a small business and it costs me $60 a day to work.unless we all want to subsitize replacing the cars of 25 percent of the population to buy hybrid cars and trucks[not tax credits but actuall cash as a lot of people either dont have the cash or equity or credit score] as thease people are the ones driving older cars that cant be coverted or its to expensive to convert to natural gas.those of us in the west dont have a lot of public transportaion to rely on or like myself have to drive for work period.so while we as a nation commit to a massive effort over the next 10 years to be truly independant.we have the resources, our technology is far advanced over what it was to prevent spills and during that time help the lower income of us and the small business people like myself buy alternate fuel vehicles that way everyone wins, also look at the polls the public almost 3 to1 wants to drill here.sorry i disagree with all of you on this however my support for hillary remains unshaken.

didn't you listen to her speech (0.00 / 0)
drill now, get 200,000 gallons a day in 2030?  I think that's DUMB. We need to fix the electricity grid, that saves 3/4 on fuel, and the fuel used is domestic, and we need overseeing in the oil industry, they've had a paid ride, we need less oil, not more.  Really, it's only 15 minutes, listen.

Back when I was a kid, you could take the train to San Francisco from Oakland, the upper deck was for cars, the lower one for the train. but it was the oil companies that killed the train service, they could do it by way of corrupt politicians and so the people got screwed.  Don't be naive, if they tell you drilling is the answer, that's almost certainly not the answer.

look if we continue with all of the enviormental roadblocks to new drilling then yea it will take 10 or 20 years.we have to have the national will to just drill now and even with the deep offshore id be willing to bet oil is flowing in 2 to 3 years.also the minute we show a natinal resolve to drill the price of a barrel will fall dramatically.its nice you remember car trains that was then and this is now.tell me how on a average work week i put between 500 to 750 miles on my work truck to earn my living and so does your plumber, landscaper, pool maintience,electrician,airconditioning/heating tech and electronic repair people so unless you want to pay substantially higher prices for all of our services[which my clients dont, very vocally by the way]then we need to bring the cost of fuel down now, otherwise please tell me how else i can get to my job sites.by the way speeches are great this is something i deal with daily.

actaully (0.00 / 0)
it will when demand goes down, which is probably never, with China and India trying to catch up.  But it might stay the same if enough who can afford it go to electrical cars, and if some foundations get involved in helping get clean transportation. There's a lot of different things that could help, like getting people back into cities, and businesses helping with scheduling and pick-up zone electric buses. We don't have to go the drilling route, it's what big oil and Bush and Cheney want to do, and they see a window of opportunity to sell us this dead fish.

It is so clear.

Right in front of their noses.

Un-f*&$ing believable.

OT....I sent this "donation" to the McCain campaign today:
----------------------
I want to "donate" something.

I am a PUMA member.  I had a 25 year - successful - career in NYC advertising.  I am a retired attorney.  And something the McCain Campaign said today SHOULD BE HIS THEME FOR THE REST OF THIS ELECTION:

"John McCain has dedicated his life to serving, improving and protecting America. Barack Obama spent an afternoon talking about it."

It is perfectly on strategy - it mutes concern about Senator McCain's age and points out what an empty suit Obama is.

PLEASE PASS THIS 'DONATION' ON TO PEOPLE WHO MAKE THESE DECISIONS.

Thank you.

Interesting comment by the McCain campaign (0.00 / 0)
Although I normally avoid columns by Bob Novak, he did have an intriguing piece the other day about a conversation with a long-time former Republican campaign operative who said that if the Repubs are smart enough to make the campaign about Obama rather than Bush, the Dems will lose. Made sense to me, and it seems as though today's comment from McCain's campaign may mean they are heading in that direction.

"It's about Barak, stupid" (0.00 / 0)
I've heard panel discussions talking about that this election is really about Obama. It's actually a brilliant strategy if you think about it. The MSM is obsessed with him, how easy to use it against him with little effort. Obama is turning into a circus side show. It's really Barak vs Barak. All McCain has to do is be a "reasonable" choice.

Hillary never became a side show and is truly the leader of the pack. Supers, there is still time. Hillary can beat McCain!

Alice left me in Wonderland.
