Oust Pelosi! Cindy For Congress '08

by: grlpatriot

Sat Jul 26, 2008 at 00:05:55 AM EDT

Speaker Nancy Pelosi might have a little company on the ballot this year in San Francisco. Peace activist, Cindy Sheehan, is set to challenge Pelosi for her U.S. congressional seat. Dissatisfied with Democrats and Pelosi's unwillingness to impeach Bush and end the Iraq War, Sheehan is putting together a long shot bid to unseat the Speaker.

Cindy needs a few more dollars and signatures to get on the ballot. This from Count Us Out:

Cindy Sheehan is a gutsy anti-war Democrat who is challenging Nancy Pelosi's congressional seat. If Cindy wins, Nancy will be OUT of Congress.

To get on the primary ballot, Cindy must turn in 10,198 signatures by August 8. As of today, she has 9,764.

Let's help put her over the top! Donate to her signature collection drive!

$1,000 TOTAL would do it - $10 each from 100 people, or $5 each from 200.

From Cindy's website at http://www.cindyforcongress.org/

If you don't live in San Francisco you can still help. Besides all of the amazing volunteers we have on the streets collecting signatures, we also have paid signature gathers helping us out. This costs us $1 for every signature they collect, worth every penny - but an extra expense.

A $10 donation can help us secure 10 valid signatures. Support our signature drive with a contribution.

More below the fold...

Sheehan, whose son, Casey, was killed in 2004 while serving in Iraq, became the very public face of the anti-war movement. From 2005 to 2007, Sheehan mounted prolonged demonstrations outside Bush's Crawford, Texas ranch and the White House.

Sheehan is poised and ready to pounce. Let's help her oust Pelosi. Contribute.

I hope she make it. (0.00 / 0)
Can't stand Pelosi.

Sheehan's History (0.00 / 0)
of distorting Clinton's position on war makes it impossible for me to support her in any way shape or form, at least until she can rewrite for herself a different history.

I know that sounds like I see everything (to the point of obsessiveness) through a certain Clinton loyalty lens, but it is what is.

I genuinely believe that blogosphere activists and others including Cindy Sheehan so wanted to punish Clinton for the AUMF vote that they were willing to say and do anything to impose that punishment, and have in due course, with the rhetoric they chose, did their part to help nominate a politician who will most likely keep the war going longer than Clinton.

I suppose I could see that as an honest mistake on Sheehan's part given her circumstances.  I just despise the rhetoric that's all.  If she has stopped calling Clinton a "war hawk," then I should reconsider.

Thank you, edgar08 (0.00 / 0)
Much as I am furious at Pelosi, I would never turn to Cindy Sheehan.  Her overheated rhetoric makes her a great fit for the DKos crowd, but not for me.
I don't vote in Pelosi's district anyway, so the point is moot.

If there were some other opposition to Pelosi, I'd be happy to lend my support.

she's better than nancy (0.00 / 0)
Cindy is over the top in her stated opinions, but if anyone has the right to get that one wrong it's Cindy.  She thinks Hillary did it for politics, she doesn't know that Hillary was trying to stop Bush, tie his hands with inspectors who would find nothing. But Cindy is the voice of grieving moms, and Nancy is the voice of her own self-regard. there is no choice, I'd vote Cindy in a heartbeat.

Wow, I checked, and you're right (0.00 / 0)
I didn't know. She called Hillary Clinton her "least favorite Democrat." Less favored than Senators Byrd and Nelson? Come on, now. She'd bought into Clinton Derangement Syndrome, plain and simple.

I'm a Stantonian Democrat.

I didn't know about her CDS either (0.00 / 0)
But Sheehan is an opportunity for PUMA right now to oust Pelosi. Not because we agree with Sheehan, but because Pelosi has to go! The poll numbers are very low for Congress now, the timing is right to strike. It's a long shot, but worth making Pelosi start looking over her shoulder. I will also be supporting Ed O'Reilly in his challenge for John Kerry's Senate seat.

We should support challenges to all who are corrupt, lied, and had a hand in smearing both Hillary and Bill.

I agree, but Sheehan has to accept Hillary Clinton first. (0.00 / 0)
I think Sheehan would get a lot more money and a lot more blogosphere coverage if she'd say, "Hillary Clinton is the best candidate left standing even though she's suspended her campaign; I stand against the corrupt DNC who shanghaied this election, most especially against the current Speaker of the House, Nancy Pelosi, who helped orchestrate this huge mess."  Then she could say she's in sympathy with the PUMA movement and understands why Clinton got her vote wrong -- I think Sheehan should be allowed that much of a figleaf -- and that she warmly welcomes Hillary Clinton supporters.

If she does that, I guarantee her donations will go way up, her poll numbers will go way up, and Nancy Pelosi will have to fight for her seat big-time.

And that, as a PUMA Democrat/Independent, is what I want.  (I also want Pelosi out, but not if Sheehan is just going to kiss Obama's ring instead.  What damned good will that do us?  No offense, Grlpatriot, because I do want Pelosi out and right now, "the enemy of my enemy is my friend.")

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

it would be smart (0.00 / 0)
she might not, though, she's one issue, the war that killed her son, and she isn't open to thinking further, at least not so far. But anyone with contact with her might try informing her that Hillary has been honest on that vote, and she hasn't oversold herself on it, she's taken the hits without whining, which wouldn't have helped her anyway, and that if Cindy chose to believe Hillary's word, which have been consistent, she might realize that it was a complex time and the only way to stop that war that could have worked, would have been if the war authorization mandated inspectors and mandated that Bush allow them to complete the job.

If she can get that, maybe she can look beyond her 'belief,' and look at the whole Hillary. If she could bring on PUMA's who want to get rid of Nancy, she'd have a wider audience.

She probably liked HIllary's exit plan better than any other, and Hillary's stand that she was against the surge, not because more troops wouldn't bring down violence, she thinks our troops can do pretty  much anything if they have the right tools, but that it didn't matter, we still have to leave and there is no reason to waste another American life on a war that isn't ours to win.

i'd love to see Cindy in the congress.  She's passionate about right and wrong, and there would be one member of the Senate whose child had paid the ultimate price for George Bush's insane killing-war.  She'd shame many. They'd do anything to keep that from happening. Nancy, impeaching off the table Pelosi would run from her.   Would anyone else like to watch that debate?

House of Representatives, Anna. But yes, I'd love to see the debate. (0.00 / 0)

congress (0.00 / 0)
is the senate? I slept through 8th grade civics.  I thought collectively they were congress, but then I also thought that what mattered to Democrats most was one person one vote.

Collectively (0.00 / 0)
Congress=Senate and HofR. Pelosi is a member of the HoR and Speaker of the HofR. Members of the HofR are usually referred as Congress man or woman or Representative. The "Congress" bit can get a little confusing.

If Cindy Sheehan is the best the Dems can (0.00 / 0)
come up with, forget about taking out Pelosi. Sheehan has zero political credentials, and she has shown herself to be obsessive to the point of caricature. A lot of mothers have lost sons in this war. Yes, she had a point, and does. But that does not qualify her to be in Congress, it does not mean that she is a progressive, it just means she lost a son to the war and made headlines about it for a long time. Even the people at DKos got tired of her one-note rants. If people vote for Sheehan it will not be FOR her, it will be AGAINST Pelosi, and that isn't going to win an election. Not with Pelosi's entrenched political organization and her family influence. If she has done well by her district, they will send her back even if she did take impeachment off the table. Cindy Sheehan is the wrong candidate to take her out. People don't win elections with pity votes.

Sometimes you have to use the tool (0.00 / 0)
that's available to you at the time. Cindy is running as an Independent. No Dems planned to run against Pelosi. No one had any idea this primary was going to be such a mess and that Pelosi was going to be so whack.

Sheehan isn't a good choice, I know, but she is an alternative to Pelosi. Yes, it would be a vote against Pelosi. Hillary has more chance of getting the nomination in Denver than Cindy has of unseating Pelosi, but wouldn't it be nice to be a thorn in Pelosi's side for a while and make her work at keeping her seat.
