Feature or Bug? HCR Leaves Out Women's Health

by: Pacific John

Thu Nov 12, 2009 at 00:41:34 AM EST

Read Susie (and The Nation) and decide for yourself:

None of the bills emerging from the House and Senate require insurers to cover all the elements of a standard gynecological "well visit," leaving essential care such as pelvic exams, domestic violence screening, counseling about sexually transmitted diseases, and, perhaps most startlingly, the provision of birth control off the list of basic benefits all insurers must cover.

Incompetence or corruption?

My bet: both.

Indifference? (0.00 / 0)
Why should they care about women?

After all, legislative sausage-making is a sausage-fest.

Sexism, pure and simple. (4.00 / 1)
And the so called women's advocacy groups?
The "progressive feminists"?
Those who stood by as Hillary was labeled an "evil bitch" and Palin was criticized, not on the basis of crazy wrong policies, but on the basis that a mom with young kids shouldn't run for high office and belonged at home with the babies?
As we said at the time, that genie won't go back in the bottle.
After they let that high level Obamabot get a high level WH staff job after groping the cut out of Hillary for the cameras, they forfeit all right to "bitch" about anything  . . . and I say bitch, 'cause it's now acceptable political lingo in progressive discourse on all the cool kids' sites.

BTW (4.00 / 1)
Obama kicked off his campaign with that old time religion anti abortion anti marriage equality gospel tour of South Carolina with Rev McClurkin.  Please do not act with shock or disappointment regarding women's health issues, the Stupak amendment, inaction on DOMA/DADT, etc.

And, sorry to keep coming back to this - - (4.00 / 1)
but I'm STEAMED!
If I hear one more so called "PROGRESSIVE" say the principle of expanded health care should take precedence over concerns about women's rights . . . UUGGGHHHH!

[ Parent ]
Something is missing here..... (4.00 / 3)
"Either way, the irony of letting anti-abortion sentiment undercut the coverage of birth control is that it will likely lead to more abortions. "If women can't get this kind of primary care, there are three clear outcomes: cancer, abortions and infertility," says Anne Davis, medical director of Physicians for Reproductive Choice and Health..."

Anne, darling.  you forgot that it will also lead to MORE CHILDREN.  Children of poor, single mothers who can't afford to pay for abortions in the first place.

Maybe that's what these "Family Friendly" politicians are all about?

CC - - If we have a home grown underclass - - (4.00 / 1)
there's no need for them pesky furiners to do the manual labor!

Especially when them pesky furiners are dark skinned (4.00 / 1)
At least the Irish were white.

No words. (0.00 / 0)
Other than AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA! if that's a word.

BOTH (4.00 / 1)
"Incompetence or corruption? "

I vote both.

He really did not need to bring this up in a speech.

Often, a miscarriage requires an abortion afterward (0.00 / 0)
So yeah, I bet they didn't think about this when they promised "No federal dollars will fund abortion." Then this probably boxed them in all sorts of ways and led them to leave out birth control.
