Women Are Not Warming Up to Obama

by: Alegre

Thu Jul 31, 2008 at 00:30:02 AM EDT

You've gotta hand it to the mid-west... they have some pretty sharp BS meters and can see through it quicker than most.  Well a Chicago Sun-Times columnist - Carol Marin - hit the nail on the head with her column this morning.  Kinda goes back to that arugula flap in the lead-up to the Iowa caucuses.  Big donors are just as clueless when it comes to understanding why millions of us are still not ready to ride that unity pony of Howie's.

Michele Obama spoke at a "women for Obama" fundraising event recently where well-dressed (and well-off) women dined on a gourmet lunch, and I think they're starting to understand they've got a problem here.

Women voters aren't warming to 'cool' Obama

Departing from her prepared remarks, she cautioned a ballroom of applauding "Women for Obama" that despite their unwavering support, "there's a whole country out there that still needs a little convincing."

Umm... hate to break it to you Michele, but we're going to need more than a little convincing here.  A whole lot more.  For many of us, that train left the station months ago.  For others - well you might (just MIGHT) still have a shot at winning them over.

... the women Obama needs right now are the ones who do not dine downtown. They're the ones who can't afford organic anything, forced to choose between a gallon of gas and a gallon of milk because they can't buy both on the same day.

Women like Sarah.

Make the jump...

Alegre :: Women Are Not Warming Up to Obama
A few hours after leaving the "Women for Obama" luncheon, I ran into Sarah, not her real name. I've known her for a few years. A single mom, she free-lances, working as many jobs as she can to support two growing boys. She dreams of a permanent gig with benefits, but it's still just a dream.

A 37-year-old Democrat, she is also a college grad and a news junkie who has watched this campaign like a hawk. She surprised me with her anger Tuesday, saying she's voting for McCain.

To Sarah, Barack Obama is like the organic chicken at lunch. Sleek, elegant, beautifully prepared. Too cool.

Marin then notes that she asked the women at that fancy luncheon whether they think there's still a big gap between the BHO's and Hillary's camps.  I don't' think those women are listening to what's going on out here.  They point to the issues the DNC often uses to scare us back into line (choice, healthcare, wage parity for women etc), but when you get right down to it - BHO hasn't exactly been our champion when it comes to choice OR healthcare.

Marin's last line was the take-away for me and I think it encapsulates BHO's problem with more than just the women who've supported Hillary in this campaign.  Rather than gourmet lunches at high-priced fundraising events, BHO needs to get out there and meet regular folks like us - listen to us talk about our healthcare horror stories, that many of us have been out of work now going on 2 years, or of the looming foreclosure on our homes.

Oh, and one other thing...

They may need to try offering more macaroni and cheese.

it's not just him (0.00 / 0)
I mean, he isn't the kind of candidate one does warm up to, but it's really not about him. It's about having the best candidate by far who also happens to be female and who also happens to be a real public servant losing in an insider coup.  He could be any less qualified man, more less qualified or less less qualified, arrogant or humble, intelligent or merely cunning, knowledgeable or fathead, it's the less qualified and the party coup part i can't warm up to.

Excellent Point Anna! (0.00 / 0)
The guy's just not ready to lead.

less less qualified.  If he were ready, how would they plan to 'control' him?

I just don't like him (0.00 / 0)
The more I see of him, the more visceral and negative my response. Starting with the "you're likeable enough" and confirmed by the "sweetie" incident. He comes across as arrogant and condescending.

I can't stand McCain and I would never vote for a Republican after the last 8 years, so it's quite a dilemma for me.

Exactly how I feel (0.00 / 0)
I particularly am offended by how he ran the primary. He strikes me as very "republican(name calling, rigging the system)." After the nightmare with Bush and the rubberstampers(who I worked hard to defeat)I I find myself with the dilemna of having no candidate that represents me, my views or even the direction I'd like to see the country go.

he's not likable enough? (0.00 / 0)
and that's what he's running on, his 'superior' personality?

No candidate without Hillary in the GE.  I won't vote for McCain.

That's why I'm still fighting for Hillary.  Without her name on the ballot our nominee won't be legit.  Our delegates MUST be given a real coice in Denver.

So until the sweep up the confetti and turn off the lights in Denver - we fight on.  We still have a few weeks but the clocks ticking guys - we still have a LOT of work to do!

Those women who don't dine down town; (0.00 / 0)
are the single mothers trying to get by.  they are the women who are trying not to lose their apartments so they don't become a statistic.  michelle obama is just as out of touch as her empty suit husband.  wasn't it shelley who said couldn't buy earrings with her $600.00?

We are not as stupid as they think we are.

RD; George Bush is more qualified to be president then Barack Obama.

I notice (0.00 / 0)
she repeated the "single mom on food stamps" lie in an effort to present Obama as feeling for ordinary people.  That's the kind of bs that makes his whole candidacy dubious.  The problem isn't women: it's Obama.

I'm having trouble putting my finger on it (0.00 / 0)
But there is something about the way this battle between Hillary and Barack has played out that is an echo of life for women below the income meridian.  This is a group of women who are increasingly bearing the burden of holding their families together, both emotionally and financially.  The men in their lives don't seem to quite get how much it takes to raise kids.  They don't really get the whole idea of sharing responsibilities equally.

They just don't get it.  Hillary does and Barack doesn't.

Its the same battle I see playing out over at sites like Mydd.  I was reading more Puma bashing over there last night.  They say things like, "ignore them."  There's a diary now entitled, "Let them rot."  That seems to be the collective attitude of society to lower middle class single mothers.

The problem starts with the men in their lives and goes right up through the "progressive blogs" and into the upper reaches of the Democratic Party.  Democrats lost the lower middle class men in the 1970s.  Now we seem to be working on losing the lower middle class single mothers.

Wow. Great Comparison (0.00 / 0)
Expand on this a bit and you've got one kick@ss diary.

As for the so called progressives and the attitude toward us...

For a group so intent on ignoring us, they seem to be more then a little obsesses with what we say and do ;-)

The battle at MyDD seems to be over. (0.00 / 0)
The admins have decided to let Obamabots troll-rate with abandon and turn the site into just another rah-rah, no criticism allowed propaganda tool.  Sad.

There's an easy response to that (0.00 / 0)
I've pretty much stopped going to mydd.  Once a day,
just to see if they have uncovered any interesting news.

Maybe its just me, but it seems like Todd Beeton has no tolerance for Puma whereas Jerome is egging them on.  Maybe its an internal battle with the Admins.

I Don't Post There Any More (0.00 / 0)
Not since Hillarys speech in June.  I'm not boycotting the place or anything - I just don't do loyalty oaths and I can't stand sugary kids drinks.

I buy organic and I can't support Obama. (0.00 / 0)
It's what anna shane said and more, I simply think he lacks principles.  Take his new stance on "late term abortions".  He voted against a ban on so-called "live birth abortion" as a state Senator.  I have no idea how he really feels about choice.  I do know he is willing to use women's health as a method to appear more conservative.  Also, when you look back at his career, you can not see one issue he has devoted any significant amount of time to.  That's odd for a public servant.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

remember new hampshire? (0.00 / 0)
women like sarah came out of nowhere and voted for hillary en masse. that's what the DNC has shown its willingness to piss away by anointing The One™. howie and donna have said they don't need out votes. they're busy eating organic chicken with The Ladies Who Lunch™.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Gourmet (0.00 / 0)
lunches, organic food, jet setting to Europe to be adored by concert goers gorging on free food and beer. How about they put some of that money to work HERE! helping Americans!

Organic?? Yeah right- when it comes out of my garden I can afford organic. I buy a years worth of meat at the 4-H market auction every year because it has no hormones or anti-biotics and it helps a great organization teach kids something worthwhile. We don't buy milk or cheese anymore, the kids are gone and we can not afford such luxuries. Imagine that- milk is a luxury item in the U.S. What is wrong with that picture?

More meat and good ole potatos please!

Both the Obamas are ut of touch and so is the DNC. The peasants are going to revolt and they won't be able to figure out why.

It's a strange stereotype she's pushing. (0.00 / 0)
First, we PUMAs were characterized as cranky bitter old women.

Well as a result of being 'old' I'm also quite well off by now - no longer the stuggling parent.  Age tends to have that benefit - fewer expenses and a lifetime of earnings make things more comfortable financially.  Not that everyone who's 'old' is in that situation but many are.

But this reporter seems to be trying to redefine Clinton supporters as blue-collar struggling (thus younger) women.  Is this yet another appeal to the elite Democratic tendency to dismiss the actual concerns of the poor and/or underpriviledged?  As a lifelong Democrat, I admit to my party's tendency to act as if 'we know what's best for you' with regard to social problems.  We're not always good at listening to people we're trying to help.  As in poor = uneducated = we have no need to listen to what you're saying because we know better than you do.  So if Clinton supporters can be classified in that camp, their concerns can be safely dismissed.

which is why (0.00 / 0)
Hillary was gaining momentum among al women, even pug women, on competence, on listening, on being practical and getting the best deal possible rather than no deal.

what I liked most about her is her ability to share, not just the limelight, she has respected colleagues, experts in their own right, she didn't always have to be the biggest brain, she invited on board all the big brains.
