MoveOn Strikes Out Again...

by: masslib

Fri Aug 01, 2008 at 23:14:16 PM EDT

OK, so we all remember MoveOn's last ad with the kid from Boy Meets World and the chick.  Well, this ad may be even worse.  This time they take a hit at McCain for his support of off-shore drilling.  They use your typical blue color looking, white, working class, father guy.  Sounds good, right?  Here's the ad:

So what's the problem?  Unfortunately for MoveOn, their candidate just today changed his position on off-shore drilling.  He now favors "limited off-shore oil drilling".  Oops.  Back to the drawing board guys.  Maybe next time stick with issues advocacy.

maybe they can just stick to generic hopey-changey stuff... (4.00 / 7)
...issues aren't where it's at anymore in obamaland. never were. he's a politician, don't you see. that issues stuff is for the staff to worry about.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Even His Supporters Can't Keep Up w/ His Changing Positions (4.00 / 7)
Maybe he should send out a schedule / program to all of his mouthpieces, surrogates and advocates.

Ok guys here's the schedule for this week - don't put out stuff on this this and this issue cos I'm going to backtrack on them ok?

Sheesh!

You wacky candidate, you!

Sweet Justice (4.00 / 5)
So, so sweet. I hope it's already queued up to play on stations nationwide.

I hope they play the ad too, (4.00 / 2)
that will give producers like GeekLove08 excellent material to run side-by-side clips of flip-flopping. Don't know if anything will stick, but the teflon has to wear out sometime!

Still Hearting Hillary, In Slo-Mo toward McCain

This will only make a few news cycles (4.00 / 4)
nothing like that earned media - Don't pay to play, get the news media to play it for free!

I was a charter member of MoveOn (4.00 / 11)
way back when they were founded to combat the impeachment of Bill Clinton.  For too may years I responded in Pavlovian fashion to their many appeals.
And then they began to lose focus, to attack elected Democrats, to make PR faux pas after faux pas...  and then I quit!  Thank goodness!

I'm so glad to be done with them!

Yeah, I remember those days. (4.00 / 5)
I don't know what happened to them.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

that was back when the party stood for something. (4.00 / 6)

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
Actually, I think it's that too much activism energy and resources (4.00 / 6)
has moved toward political figures and away from issues.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

I agree n/t (3.80 / 5)

Alice left me in Wonderland.

[ Parent ]
exactly spot on. (4.00 / 4)

and the Dem Party forgot in the primaries that how the game is played counts for something.  now they have an awful lot of us crying foul.  and we won't let them sweep the leadership's foul behavior under the rug of fake unity.

p.s. forgive me on the mixed metaphors!

[ Parent ]
how did (4.00 / 3)
you get off their list? I quit too, when they endorsed a primary candidate, I think they lost about a third of us over that one.  But, I can't get off their email list.  any suggestions?

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
I just clicked on unsubscribe and (4.00 / 4)
followed all the instructions.  I believe they send and email that you have to reply to and then they try again and then you can finally get rid of them.

I am finally getting off some of the DNC emails but it is kind of fun to write them back and tell them what I think of them.

[ Parent ]
me too (4.00 / 2)
but it didn't work, maybe there was a glut at one time and I just need to try again.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
Keep trying (4.00 / 1)
I don't hear from them anymore at all.  Be sure, however, never to sign a petition that is generated by them because that will get you back on the list and you'll have to quit all over again.

They will ask you why you are quitting, but will never condescend to reply.

[ Parent ]
WORM (4.00 / 3)
he really meant that he'll negotiate and even give up on something important, hoping he can renege or dilute, to get an energy bill passed.

This is his main message, he'll let everybody have little bit of win, so they'll feel better and not be sooo divisive.

Problem is, it's ignorant and naive. Ignorant because there is always the offer of compromise when you need votes to pass a bill, and rarely when you have congress. He's not saying he'd do it if he doesn't need to to pass an energy bill, he's saying what he's willing to give up or risk.

it also shows that he thinks compromise to pass a bill is a new idea,  like cooperating with Europe in anti-terrorism programs, which isn't new either, so that makes him look more ignorant. And naive, he thinks the other side won't just go for more if he gives away his last dollar without a struggle.

He isn't ready, that's what it shows. If an experienced politician always wants to cut the best deal, they never give in before there is something real at stake.

He ought to have said that he's against drilling, it's bad public policy, and that we need an energy bill that will pass congress. If he had to say anything at all.  Who was he trying to win?

He needs to stop chasing McCain and getting on the same page as him, he makes it seem like he's chasing McCain's voters.  He needs to chase me.

Hillary - alternative energy

Dilute is a good word (4.00 / 2)
I said that to an Obama supporter today.  We should never dilute ourselves.

[ Parent ]
He is not a good negotiator, kos got mad at him for this once (4.00 / 4)
Cannot remember the issue, maybe it was a Supreme Court justice, but his opening offer was already giving away his cards.

This is why I don't want him talking to world leaders for us. They will run circles around him.

Anyone who has had a few jobs and had to negotiate salary should know this. They should also know that "what is your biggest weakness" is a stock interview question, which he didn't.

[ Parent ]
he thinks (4.00 / 5)
just wanting to negotiate, wanting to cooperate, is new and untried. Someone needs to learn some history, and study the steps to getting a bill passed.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
He thinks we're at war with Europe too (4.00 / 3)
hence the Berlin speech. He didn't notice that both Germany and France replaced left-wing presidents with right-wing presidents since Bush pissed them off.

[ Parent ]
What how did that happen? What will George Soros say? (4.00 / 4)
Humm, let's see?  George Soros pays the bills for the DNC, Howard Dean, Obama and Move-On.  It seems they must have gotten their wires crossed.  I can't wait to see how they defend this one.  Just say no deal.  Power to the people.

Puma-SF

Sometimes (4.00 / 5)

there is a real amd urgent need that requires adjustment and flexibility. (All flips aren't bad?)  Believe me, I am not excusing Obama on this because:  The thing is McCain saw a need to adjust a lot sooner than Obama.  McCain is more ahead of the curve than BO.  As was Hillary in the primaries.  Remember she was way ahead of the curve on outlining a plan to deal with the foreclosure crisis.  Months later, Obama finally came up with something, but it was nowhere near as comprehensive as Hillary's.

p.s.
I personally am opposed to offshore drilling because I'm an envrironmental purist. I also live in NH where a lot of people will be freezing this winter because of high (that's understated) heating costs. Joe Kennedy will be helping out low income Mass. residents by getting oil more cheaply from Hugo Chavez. He's criticized for this, but it works!

p.s. (4.00 / 3)

Suggestions for Huff Post Banner Headline:

BHO Flipping and Flopping All Over

or:

Obama Playing Catch-Up to McCain

(Also, maybe Obama ought to include some trampoline flipping to his daily P.E. workout.  He'd be good at it!)

[ Parent ]
trampoline flipping (4.00 / 3)
LOL! Exactly. He has flipped on so many things he has become a ridiculous caricature.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

[ Parent ]
Unless the kool-ade is still holding, (4.00 / 4)
then the headline would be: Obama is open minded!

Still Hearting Hillary, In Slo-Mo toward McCain

[ Parent ]
This Is Just Pandering, (4.00 / 5)
plain and simple.

Someone posted a video here last week of Hillary speaking out on energy.  She said that if we open up ALL the offshore sites we could add 200,000 barrels of oil per day to our supply.

She also noted that we currently consume 12 million barrels of oil per day.

Can you say "drop in the bucket"?

The solution, as Hillary so clearly understands, is more efficient use of the oil we have, control of fuel speculators and emphasis on alternative forms of energy.

John Q. must figure that if we just destroy the last remaining unpolluted areas for that paltry increase in production the cost of gas will go back down to 79 cents a gallon.

Does anyone really THINK any more?

Than Q (4.00 / 3)
I am glad you pointed it out!

Still Hearting Hillary, In Slo-Mo toward McCain

[ Parent ]
Krugman must be sick at heart today (4.00 / 4)
Krugman had a spot-on editorial yesterday taking McCain to task about off-shore drilling.  The whole editorial is here:

http://www.nytimes.com/2008/08...

Here's the money quote

The only way we're going to get action, I'd suggest, is if those who stand in the way of action come to be perceived as not just wrong but immoral. Incidentally, that's why I was disappointed with Barack Obama's response to Mr. McCain's energy posturing - that it was "the same old politics." Mr. Obama was dismissive when he should have been outraged.

Imagine how Krugman felt by the end of the day.

With McCain we'll be on guard (and rightly so) (4.00 / 3)
but with Obama I fear too many people trust him too fully.

[ Parent ]
not too many (4.00 / 3)
it's a tie now, and the attack ads have not started, and they won't start until after Denver.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
But Obama will have attack ads too (4.00 / 1)
though, maybe not because that will make him less of the "new kind" of politician.

[ Parent ]
that will be hard (4.00 / 3)
McCain is no racist, and we all know that. He's been attacked by the worst, and he now has sympathy.  The press likes him too.  I don't think it's enough for Barack to attack McCain, if it's only that, McCain would win.

Barack has to make it about his policies, what he'd accomplish, not scare people about John.

right now i think voters aren't satisfied with the two choices.

Barack needs to get to work, start listening and get more professional.  He needs to want to clean the Bush mess, bring accountability to agencies, bring sunlight.

I don't think he will do it, I don't think he knows how.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
it's hard to stand behind a candidate who won't hold still ;-) (4.00 / 1)

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
What of the Progressive Blogosphere's Strategy Now? (4.00 / 5)
The whole premise of the progressive blogosphere is to martial outrage at the immorality of politics-as-usual.  But the Obama campaign has taken one outrage-worthy issue after another off the table.  Its gotten very dangerous to be outraged.

What will the progressive blogs talk about now?  Are they in danger of losing their relevance?

Oooh you are right, and they will go bankrupt (4.00 / 3)
You hit on something dbrown4. This will get kos right in his wallet.

[ Parent ]
But, but, but...Barry's thinking about it now?! (4.00 / 3)
I used to support and donate to MoveOn when their mission was going after whackjob Republicans.  When they became an Obama cheerleader and fundraiser, (when HRC was still a viable candidate in the primary), I withdrew my support and slammed my checkbook shut.

League of Conservation Voters is next on my list.  I'm getting a lot of junk from them that The One will save the natural world too.  Huh?  What has he done, other than say he will?

Methinks the BO campaign is trading email lists for endorsements?

What has he done for the natural world? (4.00 / 3)

He voted for the 2005 Cheney Energy Bill.  Both Hillary and McCain sided with environmentalists and voted against it.

[ Parent ]
Thank you Sharyn! (4.00 / 1)
Reminds me of Obama telling his Berlin crowd "...and we'll tear down the walls..." when indeed he voted FOR the border fence....lol.

Sigh.
