Barack Obama Asks For Full Votes From Florida & Michigan

by: andrewalker08

Sun Aug 03, 2008 at 16:20:12 PM EDT

Almost two months after the DNC Rules & Bylaws Committee voted to restore the voting rights of Florida and Michigan, but with a 50% reduction in voting strength, Barack Obama has urged the Democratic National Convention Credentials Committee to fully restore the delegations from Florida and Michigan at 100%.

Below is the text of the letter sent by Barack Obama to the chairs of the credentials committee:

andrewalker08 :: Barack Obama Asks For Full Votes From Florida & Michigan
August 3, 2008

Hon. Alexis Herman, Co-Chair
James Roosevelt, Jr., Co-Chair
Eliseo Roques-Arroyo, Co-Chair

Dear Credentials Committee Chairs:

In just a few weeks, our Party will convene in Denver for our National Convention.  This will be an historic event that will showcase our vision for changing the direction of our country.

The delegates and alternates who gather on Monday, August 25 will reflect the talent, energy and rich diversity of our Democratic Party. The delegates will come from all 56 states and territories.  As these delegates go about the important business of the Convention, I believe Party unity calls for the delegates from Florida and Michigan to be able to participate fully alongside the delegates from the other states and territories.  Accordingly, I ask that the Credentials Committee, when it meets on August 24 to approve the delegates for the National Convention, pass a resolution that would entitle each delegate from Florida and Michigan to cast a full vote.

As a candidate for the nomination, I supported the DNC's efforts to establish and enforce a schedule for primaries and caucuses that would broaden the opportunity for Democrats from all regions of the country and all backgrounds and walks of life to have a meaningful voice.  An unprecedented number of voters participated in our Democratic nominating process.  We all owe a debt of gratitude to Governor Dean for his principled leadership during this long and challenging process.

As we prepare to come together in Denver, however, we must be - and will be - united in our determination to change the course of our nation.  To that end, Democrats in Florida and Michigan must know that they are full partners and colleagues in our historic mission to reshape Washington and lead our country in a new direction.

With warmest personal regards,

Barack Obama

I supported Hillary, gave her money, was vehement that all states should be counted and jeered the Obama camp when they made the argument for a 50% reduction.

Now they come back and take the position originally held by Sen. Clinton and her 18 million supporters.

There can be no doubt now that Hillary won the popular vote.

Thanks, Andrew! (0.00 / 0)

That's good Florida now will get it full vote.  He should write another letter rejecting his acceptance of all the Uncommitted delegates in Michigan.  They should be Uncommitted delegates until they vote at the convention.

Also, because of all the grief that was caused to Florida voters, their delegate votes should count double.  We all know the DNC's aim in delaying counting Florida's votes was to deprive Hillary of votes that would of exponentially increased her momentum in the primaries.

Hillary risked losing Iowa in leaving her name ON the Mich. ballot (0.00 / 0)
Do the right thing, Senator Obama. Reject your unearned Michigan delegates. You want delegates, you get your name on the ballot and YOU KEEP IT THERE.

You pandered to Iowa by taking your name off the Michigan ballot, Senator Obama. Do the right thing, sir. Show the country that "Both-ways Barack" is a myth.

I agree. Reject the unearned delegates, Sen. Obama. (0.00 / 0)
I am not pleased that Senator Obama still intends to keep the four unearned delegates that were stolen from Hillary Clinton to give to him; in addition, he deserves at best 75% of the Uncommitted delegates in MI and should have to compete for the lot of them de facto.  Even if the MI delegates decide to give him all 100% of the Uncommitted now, at least that's up to the Michigan delegation, not the DNC . . . I'd be happier with it even if the same result came up for the Uncommitted delegates.

But there's absolutely no excuse for Obama to hold onto those four unearned delegates that are rightfully Hillary Clinton's.

Senator Obama, in the name of party unity -- give those delegates back! Now!

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Had this been done earlier, "The Math" would have been different (0.00 / 0)
This guy is such a jerk. He does not care how illegitimate his nomination is.

go, hillary! i think a deal is cooking. (0.00 / 0)
in and of itself, this act has no upside for obama. there might be a dozen people left on the planet who don't know how his campaign disenfranchised FL and MI voters and why he did it, and this isn't going to fool any of these few remaining people.

so what i think is that this is part of a deal that may have been incubating all along, and got heated when the delegates started organizing to put hillary's name into nomination. obama's original strategy to intimidate hillary's delegates into not signing it by threatening them has fallen through. he knows he'll lose that fight, and now he has to deal with hillary, or else it's going to be a four-day food fight in denver.

i smell a deal.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

good thinking (0.00 / 0)
I think Barack has seen the light, the heaven's have opened, and he recognizes that he can't run as a uniter if he can't unite.  yes, he should also give back those michigan votes, and we'll have her as VP, which is far far better than nothing.  This is a good move on his part, first truly smart thing he's done lately.

And then, let him say, wait world, don't try to settle things with wars, there will be a new administration and you'll get more with peace, we'll all get more with peace.

I sure am hoping, it's what I want, and what Hillary would have done.

Yeah, he's even forgiving Blackwater now.  Saith the One:  "Blackwater has gotten a bad rap."

[ Parent ]
maybe another deal (0.00 / 0)

maybe the deal is: the One has seen the Light; he knows he can't win in November.  The convention delegates will vote in HIllary as the actual nominee, and we'll be on our way to a landslide vicory!

[ Parent ]
Yes! (0.00 / 0)
I'm still hoping it turns out that way!

[ Parent ]
What kind of a deal? (0.00 / 0)
I hadn't thought it more than what was expected, although the timing is curious.

vp (0.00 / 0)
if he takes the votes as they stand, she's much closer.  He'd be more afraid that she could pull it off in Denver, so he'd be unlikely to do it if a deal hadn't already been struck.  She admitted in the SF Q&A that she'd agreed to agree with Barack on putting her name into nomination.

She's trustworthy and wonderful too, and maybe he's figured that out and fears her less.  maybe anyway.

He cannot be president (0.00 / 0)
he is so wobbly. He is both too dovish and too hawkish on foreign policy.

Even with her on the ticket, he does not listen.

[ Parent ]
so far (0.00 / 0)
and he would be a roll of the dice, but if he picks Hillary and lets her do what she does best, that will go a long way with me in showing he can learn.  It's not a great set of choices, John McCain isn't acceptable on many levels, and Barrack isn't acceptable on fewer levels than McCain.  I would follow her lead and vote for him, but he'd win, at least possibly anyway, only with her on the ticket.  And there is no way he'd be worse than McCain, thanks to Bush the US isn't so powerful anymore.

What is worrying me most is that signal he gave that Iran could get bombed by Israel after the election. That's so scary and he needs to take it back.

Anna: It's almost Pathetic, (0.00 / 0)
You want him first and her second so bad, you don't see anything else.  It is NOT Her job, to TEACH him.

He WILL NOT be a good president, if GOD ran with him, it's just not in him.

I don't want the REPUBS either, and I'd Prefer her as president, and I'll gag with him as VP.

He's slimy, and dangerous, being a DEM is not good enough reason to vote for HIM>

WHAT IS IT that you EXACTLY LIKE about him.??

[ Parent ]
Sounds reasonable enough (0.00 / 0)
If Hillary becomes a 'Cheney' in the Obama administration I would be delighted.

[ Parent ]
woudn't that be funny? (0.00 / 0)
and she's such a worker, she'd nearly have time to clean up Cheney's awful stuff in one administration.  And she'd be living in Cheney's house, it would get solar panels, and there would be cool parties.

By the way, did you enter the dinner contest?

Yes I entered (0.00 / 0)

heh! she'd have to fumigate the office. AGAIN. (0.00 / 0)
i don't know if that's what's up, but it's a possibility. it WOULD be funny if she got cheney's job, though.

she'll have to have some ceremony to dispel the evil, though. she always follows such evil people.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
I'm sure you would, as long as HE's President. (0.00 / 0)
NOT !!!!

Convention FIRST, NO DEALS, this is just a distraction away from the Convention.

[ Parent ]
VP (0.00 / 0)

Hillary can probably get more good work done in the senate than as VP.  She can also be more outspoken in the senate pushing truly progressive issues.  All an Obama Administraion would let her do as VP is attend funerals.

[ Parent ]
that would suck (0.00 / 0)
and it would make him a very ineffective one term guy.  I'm thinking that it wouldn't go down that way, I'm thinking she'd be the same wonk with some serious clout and that, while it would be far far better with her on top, it'll be better with her. But, you're right, she'll be great wherever she is.  I like to think of her in management, managing.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
I just don't think (0.00 / 0)

a BHO administration would give her much clout as VP.  Some of the Dem elites might be happy though -- seeing it as a way to keep her quietly tucked away.

also, if McCain get in, it will probably be one-term; and she can then run in 4 years for POTUS.  If she helps BHO succeed as president, he might be around for 8 - 10 years (as he himself has said).  I'd rather have her as POTUS in 4 short years.

[ Parent ]
true (0.00 / 0)
if he loses with her on the ticket, she'd be positioned to run again, but I never thought he'd be willing to pick her and if he does that means the lad has changed a tad, for the better.  I don't think she'd do a deal with him if she could be sidelined, she's tough, she wants action, she'll help him win but if she's also on the ticket she'll be promised action and he'll have to keep his word.

I'm feeling more optimistic, these seem like unity moves to me, coming from him and I thought he'd keep up the pissy fit forever, i thought he'd just be a big baby, insist on losing his own way.  So, you know, things seem more up in the air now. It may be the polls that might have sunk in or it may be us, we're wanting good government, not just Hillary but what Hillary would do, mainly what Hillary would do.

re: he'll have to keep his word. (0.00 / 0)

Does he have a history of keeping his word?

[ Parent ]
Exactly - his word at this point means nothing. (0.00 / 0)
I want to see deeds from him, not words.

[ Parent ]
his word to her (0.00 / 0)
he'd have to keep, because she'd get to work and he'd actually have to stop her and say, hey, I changed my mind. That would not happen.  He's green and he's ambitious, ambition would win, he'd need to look good then.

[ Parent ]
No VP. Never VP. Wrong answer. (0.00 / 0)
I won't vote Obama.  I will vote for Senator Clinton if she is forced to take the VP slot.

However, we might end up with a McCain-Clinton ticket after all, in that event.

IMO, Hillary Clinton is our next President.  Not our next Vice President.  VP is not an option!

Hillary Clinton -- NOW!!!

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

never (0.00 / 0)
there is no way under the sun she'd go pug, for any reason. She believes in our party principles and ethics. She will always cut the best deal she can, for us.  If she can swallow her own pride, not that she has much, I can sure swallow my own.

Hillary - alternative energy

[ Parent ]
Cook this one up for me (0.00 / 0)
I hope the deal will be a full and fair roll-call vote at the Convention ... and a Clinton/Obama'08 nomination.

[ Parent ]
yes, (0.00 / 0)

except when the VP possibilities are vetted, it may be found BHO would have stuff in his background making him too risky!

[ Parent ]
Great point! (0.00 / 0)
I agree!   Too bad he wasn't "vetted" before becoming a Presidential candidate.

[ Parent ]
Deal MY BUTT, GUYS, he hasn't WON YET !! (0.00 / 0)
I don't know what his reasoning is, except according to susapollpuma for Fl, he's losing by 6 points.

NO DEAL, remember guys, convention with her in it FIRST.

Michigan - give back your bogus Michigan delegates, Obama (0.00 / 0)
Grownups accept the consequences of their actions. You took your name off the Michigan ballot to PANDER to Iowa. You won Iowa. You should accept SOME RISK for this move.

You did not accept any consequences, you sewed disunity by having your mommies and daddies on the RBC make excuses for you and give you delegates you didn't earn.

If you want delegates, kiddies, get your name on the ballot. Keep your name on the ballot. Obama earned not a single delegate from Michigan.

yes, Barrack (0.00 / 0)
listen to the cat, she knows.

i guess he just doubled all his bogus delegates... (0.00 / 0)
...the ones he got for taking his name off the ballot, PLUS the four extra they gave him just because he's such a wonderful person.

[ Parent ]
yes. PLEASE don't confuse this with giving the people a voice. (0.00 / 0)
in florida, obama took over and packed all the PLEO and add-on delegates with his toadies. all those people's votes are now counted in full, not just half, offsetting the delegates hillary won by beating obama like a cheap piece of meat, 50-33%, in the primary.

in michigan, he got all the delegates that were "uncommitted", PLUS four more for having a nice face, thanks to the RBC's secret deal worked out in a closed meeting, PLUS all the PLEO/superdelegates his organization inserted into the delegation. and he didn't get a single vote in the state. he's a goddam thief.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

thanks for the reality check. (0.00 / 0)

The damage was already done. It's just appearances now. Get the truth out so none of us are suckered into BHO's big delusion.
