When Writing SDs Please Consider This..

Hey All
I hate to write this but feel it is very necessary for all folks in the Hillary community. It regards writing superdelegates and the manner in which it is done. We are all very upset about the situation. However, when writing these guys it is of great importance one writes with respect towards that SD. Even if you feel differently, speak in a very respectful and clear tone.

Why am I writing this? Because I have seen many such letters to SDs. Some contain four letter words. Some call Obama a communist or worse. The goal should be to act with class as Hillary would.  Antagonizing potential votes for Hillary is very harmful obviously and hurts us all.

If you were being courted on something would you want to be called a mf*cker? Calling Obama names will do no good. Call him names online or wherever but not to these SDs. I do not want to sound school marm here but the rate of insulting emails going out to these supers is hurting us.

I have written a great many letters to supers and in fact just got a good response from a congressman today because of the MANNER IN WHICH I WROTE. When writing:

1.) Say you are a democrat but are very concerned about Obama's prospects due to events x,y,z over the past few weeks and cite them.

2.) Point out any serious negative vibes going on locally that you feel are hurting DOWNBALLOT CANDIDATES. THIS SI A HUGE CONCERN FOR SUPERS.

3.) Mention something emotive-personal.

4.) Say you respect whatever decision he or she reaches, but to at least keep in mind your concerns when voting.

The best responses I get are when writing in this respectful manner.

Congressman *****

Dear Hon. ***** ,

I met you here in **** during the Clinton campaign! My name is *****.  I am 28 years old and live in ****.  I'm a die hard Democrat as is my whole family.  Life has been quite difficult for me as for many.  I suffer from Crohn's disease.  I live in upper middle class America but even with insurance could not pay my bills.  Therefore, I went and had to go onto disability.  I get 648 dollars a month to live on-in America!

I supported Hillary Clinton during the primary.  I have said I would vote Obama come November.  However, I am growing very alarmed now about Obama and his electability.  He is struggling against McCain in every poll out.  In Ohio, Florida and other swing states he is either behind McCain or tied.  This after eight years of Bush?  Something is very wrong here.

I am a very active Democrat locally.  Recently I spoke to many area candidates at a function.  They expressed great upset to me about their fundraising.  When I asked why their fundraising was poor they told me since Obama decided to opt out of public financing for the general things have gone further south money wise for them.  Many of these folks support Obama, but have cooled significantly towards his candidacy.  We are on the verge of taking back our entire county government for the first time in decades and these great Democrats running for a variety of offices are suddenly at financial disadvantage against the GOP machine.  All politics is local and there are growing concerns here about Obama and the effect he is having on our down ballot races.

Every day now, it seems Obama is struggling on the trail.  He is a charismatic man who appears to be making some costly mistakes.  In the past month, he changed positions on oil drilling, FISA/telecom immunity, abortion issues and more.  I thought whoever became the nominee he or she would have an easy time to the White House given the eight long years of corrupt Republican rule.  This is not appearing true.  A recent Rasmussen poll showed Hillary, Gore and others outpolling McCain by near 10 points.  Yet Obama continues to slide in polling.  Worse, among Republicans, Democrats and Independents I and my friends know, Barack Obama is now not sitting well them.

I am a Democrat because the party stands for protecting people like me.  The people of this country are in physical and emotional pain from no real health insurance, rising gas prices, joblessness and many more ills.  If we lose the White House again how many more will suffer?  What kind of life will I have without changes in our medical system?  I am aware how exhausted delegates such as yourself are with thousands of letters and calls coming to you about the nomination.  However, I feel compelled to write to you.  Should Obama's performance in the swing states and nationally continue to weaken then I ask for you to consider supporting candidate Clinton in Denver.

The times we live are very trying and require a Democrat being elected to the presidency.  Losing is not an option.  I am scared about our future as a country.  You are in a unique position to help ensure we win the White House and folks like me can have a better life.  I hope that should Obama not improve within the next few weeks then delegates such as you will do what is right and provide this country with a stronger nominee-Hillary Clinton.

Thank you for your time,

PS: Fellow Democrat, I am with Electability Watch and look forward to discussing every week the question of electability and why Hillary Clinton is the most electable candidate for November.

this is an EXCELLENT letter. (0.00 / 0)
it brings home the point that WE are the real democrats - we are the ones who have been showing up and supporting the party, year after year. our concerns about obama are that he's hurting the party's chances- OUR party's chances.

we want to win. that is why we oppose nominating obama.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Good, helpful letter. (0.00 / 0)
I agree -- four letter words have no place in this type of correspondence, which is official.  We must be respectful even if what we hear isn't; unfortunately we don't have the luxury of telling 'em all to go jump in the lake (or the equivalent), as we need them to at least hear us out and read our pleas, rather than discard them outright due to bad language or whatever.

I know our emotions are running high, but if someone is that upset, they're better off not writing to the delegates at all, IMO.

Thanks for posting this.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.
