UPDATE: Nominating Petition / The Brave 300!

by: Alegre

Tue Aug 05, 2008 at 12:52:40 PM EDT

Well folks it looks like there's been a lot going on since we broke the story about efforts to gather delegate signatures on that nominating petition.  I got the following note from one of the delegates volunteers spearheading this effort - Michele Thomas - this morning.  Check it out...

Thank you for making the petition so prominent on your website. It really helps. The support has increased tenfold in the last week. It's been amazing. We will get to 300 soon now that people are reaching out to us rather us trying to find them. (Emphasis mine)

After a few rounds of emails back and forth re the upcoming PUMA conference here in DC (yeah I'll be there), she added this bit...

Let's just say the last  few days have blown me away. This is one of the most important things I've done in my life.

I can't believe the response.

So to all of you delegates out there who are still waiting in the wings of this historic effort...

A lot of you backed Hillary once.  For whatever reasons (and I'm guessing a lot of them are the same as mine) you were convinced Hillary would make the best leader, and that she's the one Democrat who WILL beat John McCain in the fall.  But because of the DNC's rigging of this race and BHO's premature declaration of Mission Accomplished in June, you walked away from what you believed, turned your back on your candidate, and backed her rival instead.

And even if you still plan on voting for him at the convention, you can still give your fellow-delegates the chance to exercise their right to vote for the candidate they truly believe will make the best President.

Your conscience is telling you that we hold elections with more than one candidate on the ballot.

Your conscience is telling you that Hillary has earned the right to be on the ballot.

Your conscience is telling you that an honest and open vote at the convention is the only way to reunify our broken and damaged party.

Your conscience is telling you that signing this nominating petition is the only right thing to do as a Democrat.  It's what we Democrats do after all - conduct fair elections.

Rigged elections are what those other guys are all about. You know - the Republicans (cough! FL 2000! cough!)?

Send Michele and her team an email and at least get more information on this effort.

hrc300delegates@yahoo.com

Do it now - there's too much at stake to do anything else.

So encouraging.

They've Gotten an Amazing Response (0.00 / 0)
If we can help pull in the support of those delegates and Hillary does what she needs to do, then we'll get our chance to be heard in Denver - inside the convention rahter then out on the street.

As it should be.

just be sure (0.00 / 0)
to triple check every name, signature, and the rules before handing in that petition.

Just saying!

This is just wonderful. (0.00 / 0)
Thank you so much for everything you're doing. I so wish I were a Hillary delegate so I could add my name! :-)

It can't be that hard to find 300 REAL Democrats in the Democratic Party. I'm sure this petition will be completed by the end of the week.

She Has a Thousand+ Pledged Delegates (0.00 / 0)
So finding 300 folks to stand up to the DNC should be doable.  The sooner the better!

if 10% of the democratic party still believes in democracy... (0.00 / 0)
...we'll get it done. there are what - 4200 delegates? 300's not a big proportion. of course, we expect the obama goons to challenge every signature, so we'll need more than 300.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

A Whole Lot More (0.00 / 0)
No doubt in my mind they'll try to do another end run around the voters by trying to keep Hillary off the ballot - by whatever means necessary.

Its his MO after all - just ask Alice Palmer.

If he caved so easily to oil drilling (0.00 / 0)
he would cave to public pressure to step aside. We just need to reach that tipping point. We're getting closer - that open letter to Obama from the Nation magazine is a big start.

Sadly, I predict a rule change. (0.00 / 0)
If the petition successfully garners 300 signatures, the rules committee will amend the requirement to be 500 or 1000 or whatever they hope is impossible in the time left.

I hope not, Liz. But I don't blame you for feeling frustrated. (0.00 / 0)
I believe we have enough media attention on this matter that if the DNC blatantly changed their rules on this, even the Obama-mad media will complain.

As for this, I applaud their efforts, and only wish I were a delegate myself: I'd gladly sign.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

No, once you get momentum (0.00 / 0)
a rule change will backlash too much. We just have to keep up appearances that OF COURSE Obama wants a roll call vote. He wants Unity! (That's what we say publicly, even though we know differently.)

Awesome job, Alegre! (0.00 / 0)
These poor people have not been given any instructions except perhaps threatened to have their credentials stripped if they don't declare their love for Barky.  This is shameful.  This is pathetic.  This is not how we run elections in this country.

Be a hero not a zero and sign the petition.  You will solidify your place in history for standing strong and doing the right thing.

Power to the people.

Lost credentials.
Lost jobs if they union members.

Its disgraceful.  The thuggery and dirty tricks sound like something out of the old USSR.

Seriously - if this is the kind of change those Chicago smack-down pols are hopingto bring to DC, they can frackink KEEP it.

Ya know?

Toni - you know about the helpline right?

Someone posted it in one of the other threads.  I'll try to find it and post it in a short diary in its own right after the kids go to bed tonight.

Delegate Count re: full representation (0.00 / 0)

This is slightly off topic from the petition, but the press keeps saying Obama already won the nomination.  This Sunday's Miami Hearld said this:

Practically speaking, whether Florida delegates have full or half votes won't matter because Obama won enough delegates in the primaries to claim the nomination.

Did Obama win all the delegates he needed in the primaries?  I thought not; that neither candidate crossed the required threshold.  Is it that enough SD's crossed over?  But wasn't that after the primaries?  And besides they can cross back.  Anyway, I think the Hearald is wrong saying he won the delegates he needed in the primaries.

You're right, Sharyn. (0.00 / 0)
He did not even come close to winning enough pledged delegates to claim the nomination.

The only reason Obama has claimed victory is because of the SD's stating their preferences early. However, they are not binding until the Convention.

Essentially, the race is a tie in pledged delegates. But you'll never catch the MSM accurately reporting anything to do with this election.

Thanks (0.00 / 0)
for confirmation.  I thought so.  It just baffles me how the press can get it so wrong.  Aren't most reporters well-educated?  And if they're in too much of a hurry to get to press, aren't there editors who are supposed to double check the information to make sure it's correct.  These guys have such a poor performance, they should be fired.  They are not earning their salaries, that's for darned sure.

The Harold's Full of CaCa (0.00 / 0)
They're either lying to us or they haven't the first clue as to what they're talking about here.

Neither candidate has the nomination until the vote's taken.

THAT's why its crucial that both names get on the ballot and an honest vote be taken.

Thanks, Alegre! (0.00 / 0)

It's a full-time job to keep on top of what's actually true and vice-versa.  The irony is, the sloppy reporters are the ones getting paid!
