Sen. Barack Obama's energy policy is offering more flip flops than a Lake Tahoe souvenir stand.

First the presumptive Democratic nominee opposes offshore oil drilling, but, wait, now he doesn't. Second, he never suggested dipping into national petroleum reserves, and now he wants to open the spigot.

And remember how he hooted at suspending federal gas taxes as a primary-season stunt? Now, he wants $1,000 rebate checks mailed out to families, paid by a windfall profits tax on the oil industry that was tried and dumped in the 1980s.

The crushing power of $4-a-gallon gas lies behind these changes along with polls showing his modest lead is dwindling. Other polls, showing a slim majority of the country now favors coastal drilling, have made it easier to switch positions with little pain.

But the ideas that Obama is now embracing come loaded with flaws and offer the driving public only momentary relief at best.

Opening up new coastal areas for drilling will take five years or more before these supplies dent pump prices. And the petroleum reserve is a form of disaster insurance that the nation draws on in a true crisis, not a presidential campaign.

Obama remains committed to a long-term energy plan that would wean the nation off its oil addiction and create new sources of power. It's the right direction, but the Illinois senator will never get there if he keeps making detours to score.

Was surprised to see SFGate not on koolaide (0.00 / 0)
they just replaced their Chief Editor with some guy from Arizona.

Also their political reporter Carla Marinucci has caught a lot of Obama gaffes beginning Spring 2007 - when he called Sen. Boxer a "cutie" Marinucci reported it had some Dems asking if whether he's ready for prime time.

Really.  I dislike him almost as much as I dislike Bush...and that's a lot of dislike!!!

It happened a few weeks ago. My dislike for Bush has been eclipsed by Obama. Yes, I did clutch my pearls, then decided to dig my heels in even harder for Hillary!

I was driving along today wondering the same, myself. (0.00 / 0)
I accused myself of racism, but that didn't work because I pictured him as white and still didn't like him.  We got a breath of fresh air with Hillary, something really different, and a man is the same old, same old no matter what color he is.  I am just sick of having to pick from men.  But then again, I pictured Obama as a woman and I still didn't like him.  It's a mystery.  No offense to men reading this, it's just that I am sick to death of 50+ years of only males to choose from everywhere I turn, in the churches, the government, in the financial world, in my workworld and where every where else men have dominated during my life time.  It is nearly everywhere.  And I can't take it anymore.

Off shore drilling is one thing that Democrats have (0.00 / 0)
not caved on, and now Obama is stabbing them in the back for it.  He has a habit of taking things that are democratic issues, that democrats have gained support for, like off shore drilling and social security and throwing them out for his own personal pandering and gain.  Add universal health care and what he is going to mean for it, to the pile of trash.  

His ability to look long term and hold a permanent is about as good as Paris Hilton's is, only everybody knows it about Paris.
