We're not finished folks - not by a long shot!

Ya Know, That's a Really Good Question

by: Alegre

Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 10:26:39 AM EDT

From an article on Yahoo...

"If everything is so good for Barack Obama, why isn't everything so good for Barack Obama?"

Nice to see the press are finally starting to cop on to what we've been saying here on the blogs for weeks / months now.  BHO's hit a ceiling folks.  The polling numbers have stalled and in a year when he should win this thing against the republicans in a walk, he's struggling and has yet to break the 50% threshold.  Gee... I wonder why that is.

Couldn't have anything to do with his constant attacks on the Clintons and their supporters, or the fact that millions of Hillary's voters are saying they either won't vote in Nov. or they're backing McCain if BHO's our nominee - could it?

LINK

In the two months since Barack Obama captured the Democratic nomination, he has hit a ceiling in public opinion polling, proving unable to make significant gains with any segment of the national electorate.

While Obama still leads in most matchups with John McCain, the Illinois senator's apparent stall in the polls is a sobering reminder to Democrats intoxicated with his campaign's promises to expand the electoral map beyond the boundaries that have constrained other recent party nominees.

That gap between expectations and reality comes as Democrats enjoy the most favorable political winds since at least 1976. At least eight in ten Americans believe the nation is on the wrong track. The Republican president is historically unpopular. From stunning Democratic gains in party registration to the high levels of economic anxiety, Obama should have a healthy lead by almost every measure. Yet, in poll after poll, Obama conspicuously fails to cross the 50 percent threshold.

If there is a primary explanation as to why the race has remained close this summer, it is that Obama has failed to make gains overall with white voters, who still cast about three in four ballots on Election Day.

Make the jump... there's more.

Alegre :: Ya Know, That's a Really Good Question
Economy in the crapper.
Forty-Seven million without healthcare.
Countless Americans losing their homes to foreclosure.
Skyrocketing gas prices.
An illegal war without end and an opponent who's said we could be there 100 years.
Ummm... Speaking of his opponent - "Bomb bomb bomb, bomb bomb Iran"
A republican incumbent who's numbers are in the cellar (3rd term anyone?).

Guys we should be winning this race for the WH in a cakewalk.  And with all the open seats in Congress one would think we'd be able to win a veto-proof majority in the Senate (just in case).  But now it's looking more and more like we'll be lucky to hold our razor thin majority there.

There's no excuse for BHO's anemic numbers against McCain at this point.

I don't know about you, but if I were a Democrat running for office down-ticket to BHO, I'd be mighty worried about his short - or nonexistent coattails here.  I think they know as well as we do that BHO's inability to close the deal will hurt their chances at winning their own contest and from what I've been hearing, some of those superdelegates are starting to take a fresh look at Hillary.

Superdelegates - there's still time to head off this train-wreck for our party.  Wake up and smell the rotten poll numbers here folks - save us!

just flipped on news (0.00 / 0)

and Fox was debating the roll call vote.  the news ticker at the bottom of the screen said:

If Florida and Michigan votes are counted, Hillary wins by 285,000 votes....

Covering the story (0.00 / 0)
FOX covered the story about Hillary putting her name into nomination yesterday during every program. They showed the YouTube clip of Hill and covered the story as news and didn't inject their opinion -- remember when the "news" was objective.

Caution signs, but not warning signs (0.00 / 0)
I think what muddles the argument that Barack Obama is destined for failure is McCain's inability to beat him in the polls so far.

If McCain were beating Obama, or even consistently tied, I think the super delegates would listen, but this has never happened. Moreover, in the stae polls, Obama has shown a huge electoral lead. Gore beat Bush int he popular vote, but as we all know, even then, an elecotral "victory" was had.

Bush and McCain tied in Gallup for two days, but other than that, Obama has never fallen below 45%, and McCain has never beaten 44%.

I also think it's unclear to everyone as to what constitutes an "adequate" lead at this point in the race.

Of course white voters are going to be pissed off. Obama has made it clear he thinks he will win without them and really has shown no inclination to reach out to them.

welcome back. (0.00 / 0)
i figured you'd be getting nervous. people talk more when they're nervous.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Nervous about what? (0.00 / 0)
You are a peculiar fellow.

Sometimes I feel the need to add to what Alegre says. Sometimes I don't. I don't understand your rampant paranoia. After all, what is there to argue about?

Sorry I agree with CAMPSKUNK (0.00 / 0)
His inane probablilities, don't fit the picture, and neither does the WHITE VOTE,which I caught at the end of the diary (and disagreed with it)

It's a little "ugly" twist to this "race" crap.

No one is strange here CD, and it's not paranoid.

It is what it is, you don't agree, fine, but show us FACTS, if you have any.

WHERE DID you get you numbers FROM, or is it just your undecided (sure!)--opinion.

"Of course white voters" (0.00 / 0)
What the hell does that mean? I'm white, but I'm not "pissed off" about Obama because I'm white and he is black.

I'm outraged because I'm a free-thinking, long-time Democrat that has seen the Democratic Party and our leaders at their worst. I have had this inexperienced, opportunist, corrupt, light-weight, wind bag, lying, flip-flopper, packaged pandering product pushed down my throat by the media, the DNC, kool-aid kidz, and voters who make decisions based on a "Yes We Can" chant.

Give me a break. Don't peddle that crap here. This has nothing to do with race. What part of Obama is "inexperienced, opportunistic, corrupt, light-weight, wind bag, lying, flip-flopper, packaged pandering product" don't you understand? He could be white, black, purple, or green for all we care; it doesn't change the fact that he is an inexperienced, opportunistic, corrupt, light-weight, wind bag, lying, flip-flopper, packaged pandering product that we DO NOT support.

This is what the polls are beginning to reflect. The Republican attacks have been cotton candy so far. The more voters get to know about Obama, the more they see the truth as we did during the primaries. Once the attacks get a little more hard hitting (Chicago, Wright, Ayers, Rezko), Obama is toast.

hey, this is our resident troll. (0.00 / 0)
if you're too harsh with him, he'll leave forever ;-)

Forever isn't long enough (0.00 / 0)
I'm sick and tired of the meme that Obama fails to get support from whites because of his race. He gets more support because he of his race, not less. Voters are judging Obama on the content of his character, not by the color of his skin, and are finding him lacking. That's the truth.

Remember When Geri Ferraro Pointed That Out? (0.00 / 0)
(That he'd be getting more scrutiny and wouldn't have come this far on such a thin resume if he'd been white)...

They called her a racist for pointing out the obvious.

I'm sick of walking around the obvious on eggshells.  It gets mighty old after a while.

Do you read Alegre's posts? (0.00 / 0)
Or do you just get angry?

It's the source she quotes, not my words:

If there is a primary explanation as to why the race has remained close this summer, it is that Obama has failed to make gains overall with white voters, who still cast about three in four ballots on Election Day.

Yes I do (0.00 / 0)
and yes I saw that. I disagree with your supposition as to why Obama has failed to make gains with white voters.

Of course white voters are going to be pissed off. Obama has made it clear he thinks he will win without them and really has shown no inclination to reach out to them.

I never said it was because of race (0.00 / 0)
To clarify, my theory was that he has ignores them, or, more specifically, specific subsets of white voters.

When people are ingored by a national politician, they tend to get angry.

If you read what I wrote, I never said it was because of his race. After all, whatever racists there are aren't going to vote for him in the first place. They don't even warrant mention.

"Of course white voters are going to be pissed off. Obama has made it clear he thinks he will win without them and really has shown no inclination to reach out to them."

My theory would have been clearer if I added the word "some", but alas, you cannot edit posts.

Coincidentally, I just read an article in the Atlantic that McCain is underperforming amongst whites, which he currently leads by only 7%, even with leaners pushed.

And we depend on you to tell us, HOW OBAMA IS WINNING (0.00 / 0)
thanks for the info.

The WHITE remark in the diary "posted" by ALEGRE, were not her words either,

Just a little dig at us "racists"

Obama (0.00 / 0)
has a strategy that has repeatedly failed in the past. If he can only get 25-30% of the white vote, he's going to go down with Dukakis in electoral history. The GOP hasn't really even started with him and has said that they wanted him leading in the polls all summer. Of course, his lead could really be nonexistent if a "bradley effect" still exists.

Just home from summer fun (0.00 / 0)
Stayed away from all news.  Email looks really evil time consuming today.  Just tuning in, heard Obama speak on cable news for the first time in two weeks this morning and he just isn't campaigning confident or intelligent.  Nothing like a long break to make one sit back and say, "Oh My".  I campaign better for Obama when speaking to the Republicans in my husband's family than Obama does for himself.  Pretty pitiful really......

obama's problem... (0.00 / 0)
...is that his fan base's attention span is shorter than the election cycle. there's been a big shift in young people's report of their likelihood of voting for obama. "extremely likely" went down 20 points.  all that enthusiasm is on the wane, and it will be long gone by november.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

I feel a big (0.00 / 0)
"I told you so" on the horizon. The youth vote that is less likely to vote for Obama now because they feel lied to and betrayed, really saddens me. They wanted a real leader and all they got was an empty box of cereal. Team Obama took advantage of their naivety.

Trust is so important and he betrayed the trust of his supporters. This is another reason why I do not and will not support Obama.

Hillary's Growing Shadow
By Victor Davis Hanson

...So, everyone is puzzled why the Democratic candidate isn't at least 10 points ahead. It seems the more Americans get used to Barack Obama, the less they want him as president -- and the more Democrats will soon regret not nominating Hillary Clinton....

...The primary season ended with a narrow Obama victory -- and a wounded, but supposedly wiser, Democratic candidate.

Not quite. Without evidence, he unwisely has claimed his opponents ("they") will play the race card against poor him. In contrast, on the hot-button issue of racial reparations, he recently played to cheering minority audiences by cryptically suggesting that the government must "not just . . . offer words, but offer deeds." He later clarified that he didn't mean cash grants, but his initial words were awfully vague.

Second, many are beginning to notice how a Saint Obama talks down to them. We American yokels can't speak French or Spanish. We eat too much. Our cars are too big, our houses either overheated or overcooled. And we don't even put enough air in our car tires. In contrast, a lean, hip Obama promises to still the rising seas and cool down the planet, assuring adoring Germans that he is a citizen of the world.

Third, Obama knows that all doctrinaire liberals must tack rightward in the general election. But due to his inexperience, he's doing it in far clumsier fashion than any triangulating candidate in memory. Do we know -- does Obama even know? -- what he really feels about drilling off our coasts, tapping the strategic petroleum reserve, NAFTA, faith-based initiatives, campaign financing, the FISA surveillance laws, town-hall debates with McCain, Iran, the surge, timetables for Iraq pullouts, gun control or capital punishment?

Fourth, Obama is proving as inept an extemporaneous speaker as he is gifted with the Teleprompter....

...In a tough year like this, Democrats could probably have defeated Republican John McCain with a flawed, but seasoned candidate like Hillary Clinton. But long-suffering liberals convinced their party to go with a messiah rather than a dependable nominee -- and thereby they probably will get neither.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

ACCORDING TO CB---he is, but we'll read a real article from a real source (0.00 / 0)
