ABCNews: Most Conventions Perform Roll Call Votes

by: catfish

Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 22:18:21 PM EDT

ABC's Jake Tapper knows some convention history:

Sen. Barack Obama's campaign appears reluctant to have any sort of roll call vote at the Democratic convention this month. Why? They have no interest in highlighting the narrowness of his victory.

This would mean the first Democratic convention without a roll call vote since President Lyndon Johnson ran unopposed for reelection in 1964.

The cyber war room will be all over him for reporting this, though ABC has already been shut out from moderating any of the four debates.

jake, you are one smart cookie. your report consists of typing out a transcript of a video we saw a week ago, and adding some snarky comments.

it's amazing -andrea mitchell discovered this video just now, the NYT posted about it today... and we watched it last week and have been talking about it ever since. how much to they PAY these people???

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Well at least he says all conventions have had roll calls (0.00 / 0)
few other reporters are willing to acknowledge that fact.

Hey, whatever works. If he types a transcript fine. Get the word out!

that's true. (0.00 / 0)
i've only been hearing that from hillary supporters like Garry Mauro, not from the media. they're all pretending as if not having a roll call vote is hardly unusual. gotta give jake credit for that.

What's really sad (0.00 / 0)
is that they probably picked up the story from FOX News who ran with it yesterday all day. HA! FOX News is beating them to the story because they are too busy chanting "Yes, We Can" in a circle jerk.

This is short and simple and even the (0.00 / 0)
most mentally-challenged media whore should be able to absorb it:

"....Tthe first Democratic convention without a roll call vote since President Lyndon Johnson ran unopposed for reelection in 1964."

This is the simple truth, the cold fact, the historical verity that needs to be shoved down the throats of the media whores who are intent on making this another chapter in their soap opera about the Clintons.

Why is this so hard to understand?

Only willful, malevolent ignorance can explain it.

Maybe because ABC has been shut out from the debates (0.00 / 0)
he feels a little more free to report it. It's unconscious, like shoot I need access, this might piss them off. Now it's like screw it, I have no access, I have nothing to lose.

Could be. (0.00 / 0)
I'd like to see this on the front-page of every blog on the Internet.
It's such a basic truth and it is really at the root of the problem that the Democratic party is facing right now.

another quaint custom obama has dispensed with... (0.00 / 0)
...is the winner assuming the loser's campaign debt. it's the best way to ensure party unity, and has been done for decades, but The Oneā„¢ is pleading poverty. he's still mad at her for running in the first place.

i wouldn't want this guy housesitting my cat when i'm out of town, much less running the country. he has no character.

Oh - CBS caught that today too (0.00 / 0)
It was a good day for acknowledging the truth, ABC then CBS said this, quoting a neutral political expert:
According to political analyst and St. Joseph's University history professor Randall Miller, it is not surprising that Clinton would push to pay all colleges and vendors because they are institutions with large constituencies.

Though Miller noted that many "also-ran" candidates leave their debt hanging, he said that there is more pressure on Clinton than on an average former candidate to repay her debt.

As an "emerging element within the party and the nation," Miller said that "she can't just shrug her shoulders and walk away."

He also noted that repaying all colleges, universities and vendors was a smart move for a politician interested in running in 2012 or later.

"It doesn't mean that Clinton will be making a bid in 2012, although I wouldn't rule it out," Miller said. "It certainly helps her out."

Though the party's nominee traditionally assumes the losing candidate's debt, presumptive Democratic nominee Barack Obama's efforts to raise funds for Clinton have been, Miller noted, less than stellar.

right! (0.00 / 0)

and letters to editors too.

and that we have to spend time fighting for something that is really a given is so ridiculous.  that way, when the roll call does happen, the DNC can say they gave us something.  well, we want something more than a given; we want the candiate preferred by the majority of Democratic primary voters to be our actual nominee. and she won't be presumptuous about it either.

it's the frame (0.00 / 0)
it's been framed as a demand of her supporters, not a normal right for the losers to get honored.  And since kids don't know history, don't believe us and it isn't reported, what's history?

the first Dem convention without a roll call vote  since Johnson's unopposed run

I'm going to do some letters to the editors highlighting this.  One of the things that stands out in my own memory of conventions is the roll call vote. And the Dem leadership, supposedly taken over by progressives like Dean, want to do away with it?!  The whole point of the convention is for the delegates to cast their votes.  Why bother to have a convention at all without this?  What a big waste of money.  That money ought to be donated to Bill Clinton's foundation, so it would be put to good use fighting poverty.  Edwards would like that too.

yes (0.00 / 0)
that's the fun part. I was at the DNC convention when Johnson was nominated, and I think there were some favorite sons that got their names in nomination, which made it more thrilling when Lyndon's name was up.  Someone would have to check that out, I was 17, just finished high school and I was a volunteer. That was the magic time when i walked next to MLK.  All I remember was that he was tall.   And awesome.
