Alegre's Corner
We're not finished folks - not by a long shot!

Open Thread: Bread and Roses Edition

by: Alegre

Thu Aug 07, 2008 at 23:21:27 PM EDT

An honest and open convention with a roll call that includes more than one name on it may seem frivolous to BHO and his followers and surrogates.  They may feel there's no need for that catharsis Hillary spoke of at that fundraiser last week.

But that's not the way Hillary's 18 million supporters - fellow Democrats see it.

Hillary's speech at our party's convention can be thought of as the roses in this video.

But that roll call vote... that's the bread the feeds the soul of our Democracy.

IN honor of Hillary's speech commemorating the 88th anniversary of our grandmothers and great grandmothers winning the vote for us...

This is an open thread - what's on your mind?

Alegre :: Open Thread: Bread and Roses Edition
To all you delegates and superdelegates out there... remember Garry Mauro from that Fox interview the other night?

Well I heard he asked the folks at that email at the top of this site to send him a petition form.

hrc300delegates@yahoo.com

He's signing on.

Have you signed on yet?

It's all about the vote and everyone getting an equal voice - don't deny that to 18 million fellow Democrats.

As we come marching, marching in the beauty of the day,
A million darkened kitchens, a thousand mill lofts gray,
Are touched with all the radiance that a sudden sun discloses,
For the people hear us singing: "Bread and roses! Bread and roses!"

As we come marching, marching, we battle too for men,
For they are women's children, and we mother them again.
Our lives shall not be sweated from birth until life closes;
Hearts starve as well as bodies; give us bread, but give us roses!

As we come marching, marching, unnumbered women dead
Go crying through our singing their ancient cry for bread.
Small art and love and beauty their drudging spirits knew.
Yes, it is bread we fight for -- but we fight for roses, too!

As we come marching, marching, we bring the greater days.
The rising of the women means the rising of the race.
No more the drudge and idler -- ten that toil where one reposes,
But a sharing of life's glories: Bread and roses! Bread and roses!

I Get A Chill (0.00 / 0)
every time I hear Joan Baez sing this amazing song.

And the imagesin this video brought tears to my eyes thinking that after everything those brave women went through 88 years ago, our own fellow Democrats are fighting to keep us from having a voice at our own convention.

How did we come to this?

What's happened to our beloved party?

I don't know, Alegre, but I am surely disgusted. (0.00 / 0)
I wish I knew what had become of our party.  I don't recognize the neo-libs who are running it now -- don't trust 'em, don't like 'em, don't believe in 'em, and don't want them as my official "party" leadership.

At any rate, I still think the Packers screwed up big-time -- Favre is now a New York Jet, and I surely wish him well (and will figure out a way to get a Jets t-shirt or something with his name on it, somehow; I believe a lot of Wisconsinites are going to suddenly become Jets fans, btw), but I still think of the Packers management as being just like the DNC.  Neither will listen to their "fans" (or in the DNC's case, their consistuents and fellow party members); they are Hell-bent on having their own way at any price, and the devil take the hindmost.

Favre deserved better than this.  Hillary Clinton has deserved better than this throughout.  It disgusts me that two good people (Favre's a Republican, mind, but some of my new best friends are now Republicans 0:-)) have been put through the wringer like this.  It sickens me and shocks me; justice isn't always served by a long shot, but it's supposed to be served most of the time.  And in these two cases, it just hasn't!

I can no longer affect the outcome of Brett Favre's situation; I had signed petitions and had agitated for his return as the Packers starting QB and had hoped the Packers would see reason.  (Rodgers is not the answer, just as Obama is not the answer for the Democratic Party.)

But I can still affect the outcome of this primary season, all the way up to the convention; after that, I don't know what I'll do if our actions haven't made any difference (if the DNC is determined to behave like Packers management, that is), but I will at least have the peace of mind knowing that I did everything in my power to overturn this unjust, atrocious, ridiculous, unbelievable outcome.

Alegre, keep fighting the good fight.  I will try to do the same.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Didja Notice He Went to a NEW YORK Team? (0.00 / 0)
Like the phoenix he rose up and out of that retirement the packers tried to keep down in.  He wasn't ready to retire and that should have been his choice.

Now he's gonna come back and rock once again.

In NEW YORK BABY!

Here's hoping Hillary comes roaring back on to the scene and takes Denver by storm.

All she needs is a bit over 100 superdelegates to come on board and we're there.  Including MI and FL at full force helps her get there too - closes the gap ya know?

Keep the faith folks - this ain't over (hi cheetos!).

That's true, Alegre. And I'm glad of it. (0.00 / 0)
I really hope you are right; that's what I've been working for all this time and it's definitely what I want.  I am convinced that Obama is not the answer.

And I hope the Jets flourish with Favre.  He's a great player.  I hope I'll be able to figure out seeing him on TV every week -- as I said before, Wisconsin has just sprouted a whole lot of New York Jets fans. ;-)

The only way Obama can ever achieve unity IMO is to refuse the four stolen Michigan delegates.  He doesn't deserve the 55 Uncommitted delegates, either, IMO, but there's absolutely no excuse for him taking four of Senator Clinton's earned delegates.  None.

If he does that, and if he gets out of the way of a free, open, unscripted convention, then if he still emerges the winner I might vote for his Vice President.  (Still won't vote for him, so I realize there isn't much in it for him from me.  But that's all I'm offering.)

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

He'll be treated like a star here, It's all about the money LS (0.00 / 0)
Too much of anything is in my opinion, has become evil.

I'm sorry for your loss, but we are THRILLED to have him.

We'll take care of him

I'm glad. Treat him well. (0.00 / 0)
And expect the occasionally odd interception.  Favre is brilliant, improvisational, magical -- and sometimes makes the dumbest rookie mistakes.  It all goes together in one extraordinary package.

I am certain he'll have a great year; he must feel so, too, or he'd have just retired again.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Didn't Joan Baez come out for BO? (0.00 / 0)
I could swear I remember that.  I think some of the old hippies, and I love them, are still stuck back there in the 60s where women played a subordinate roll in the whole civil rights/anti war movement, and apparently the whole feminist thingy escaped them too.  I used to love her music, but I might be souring on that.

Grew Up Listening to Her (0.00 / 0)
along with Pete Seeger, Judy Collins, Helen Reddy, Phil Ochs... I still have some of our old LPs and am starting to play some of the Pete Seeger songs for my own kids now.

I'll never go off that stuff - it's all good no matter who they back in this contest.

ON that note I just got Ricki Lieberman's nightly blast-out, and she had this to say...

I do not think it will come as a surprise to anyone to know that I do not support McCain and will not be voting for him.

More importantly, I do not believe that we will have to make that choice and I am focussed entirely on having Senator Clinton be the nominee of the Democratic party as the only electable Democrat.

If that does not happen, we all will have ample time to make other choices and pursue other strategies.

Until that time I would encourage every person and every group to be doing whatever is possible to get Hillary nominated as the sole focus.

I am sooooooo on board with what Ricki says here.  I can't even think past Denver - we'll have plenty of time for that.  Until then we fight like hell for a real roll call vote with BOTH of our Democratic candidates on the ballot.  At least give people a choice - whether it goes down the way we want or not at least everyone will get an equal voice at our party's convention.

Well said Ricki!
GO GO GO!!!!!

catharsis or slow burning anger. (0.00 / 0)
obama's choice. and apparently, he has chosen.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Hmmm... Slow Burning Anger (0.00 / 0)
More like a raging inferno - he really wouldn't want to see us if he keeps that catharsis thing from going down in Denver.

I agree. He can either let it burn and see if it consumes him, or (0.00 / 0)
refuse to let it burn, and wait until the full conflagration takes his political career away when the fire finally burns out.  (As in, he will not become President.  The PUMAs and PUMA-leaners will join with the Republicans to keep Obama out unless he finally sees reason and stops getting in the way of true unity.  Which can only be achieved through talking through everything, working through everything -- not by putting a Band-aid on it!)

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Interesting that he wants energy and enthusiasm for (0.00 / 0)
change instead of catharsis.  I think a catharsis is necessary before the emergence of energy and enthusiasm "cause the thing that needs catharized is dampening the energy and enthusiasm.  I don't think he is a rocket scientist in the way of human behavior or how emotions work.  He is more of a bumbling fool on that level.

[ Parent ]
yeah, it takes a certain tone-deafness... (0.00 / 0)
...to march into the congressional black caucus and tell the women there to "get over it".

if you think about what women like stephanie tubbs jones and sheila jackson lee have gone through in their lifetimes to get to where they are, and the odds they fought against, and the resolve from those struggles which they poured into the hillary campaign, to have some skinny guy from hawaii who went to harvard to sail in and tell them to "get over it"...

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Events for Non-convention Goers (0.00 / 0)
A question for everybody: Is there any organizing of get-togethers going on for people who won't be at the convention that you know about?

Excellent Question (0.00 / 0)
We really need an info clearing house blog or site that has all this info. I wonder if the JSND folks would do it. I think the 18 Million March group that will be marching in Denver is also conducting marches around the country, locally for people not going to the convention.
