| On Tuesday night, Hillary Clinton gives the keynote address at the Democratic National Convention. It's an historic moment. Not only because she is the first women to have ever won a Presidential primary, a women who has won more votes for her Party's nomination than any other candidate in U.S. history. But a women speaking on the 98th anniversary of the passage of the 19 Amendment to the U.S Constitution granting women the right to vote.
On Wednesday night we then vote. Only there's one problem. Hillary Clinton's not on the ballot. Uh, how can that be? It can be because Obama had demanded it be so.
Here's Jonathan Alter on the subject:
Hillary will likely not sign the document that is necessary under party rules for her name to be placed in nomination. The Obama forces aren't dumb enough to permit it, and Hillary, unlike Bill, has to work with these people after the election if Obama wins.
So what does any good suffragette do when forced off the ballot? They vote for her anyway. Here's Alter again:
But the rules do allow for all delegates to vote for whomever they want. So Hillary's delegates will naturally vote for their candidate even if there are no nominating and seconding speeches for her.
So how do you like that picture? One night we're celebrating the right of women to vote and the next night Clinton's supporters have to force her name into contention. If Obama's so smart, how did he let himself get caught in this visual? |
| dbrown04 :: What a Picture! No Wonder Obama Needs a Vacation |
| If Obama loses this election, it happened on June 8, 2008. The day before, Hillary Clinton gave a concession speech for the history books.
In one speech she accomplished two feats. With the Presidency no longer in the balance, she was able to speak her mind. Her true values were articulated more clearly than at any other time in the campaign. Our faith in her was not misplaced. And, she compellingly endorsed Obama. Hillary Clinton placed values and Party loyalty above her own political ambitions.
The ball was squarely in Obama's court. It was his moment to give a big speech. To speak to the roll and treatment of women in U.S. politics and society. To embrace Clinton supporters as equal to his own. To acknowledge the importance of Clinton's personal mission.
But Obama didn't do it. He chose to take Clinton's supporters for granted. We don't have to worry about Obama talking to our enemies. He doesn't even know how to talk to his friends.
So now here we are. You don't have to be a rocket scientist to realize that disaffected Hillary supporters are the elephant in the public opinion polls. The Democratic road to the White House goes right through women 40 years and older.
If Obama had gotten Hillary's supporters on his side, he would be up over 50%. As it is, he's in the very awkward position of, yet again, shoving a woman off the ballot.
What a picture. No wonder the guy needs a vacation. |
