Michelle Obama to give convention speech..on Monday.

by: FlaDemFem

Sun Aug 10, 2008 at 18:59:01 PM EDT

According to the political ticker on CNN, Michelle Obama will be giving a speech the day before Hillary Clinton's speech on the anniversary of women getting the vote.

I am beyond angry.

Here is what the ticker says...

Michelle Obama will address the convention in the headline spot on Monday night.

Headline spot. Nice. She has never won an election, has no standing whatsoever to give a speech at the convention. The only reason for her getting this gig is to try and marginalize Hillary.

I am beyond angry.

FlaDemFem :: Michelle Obama to give convention speech..on Monday.
The DNC flacks are quoted as saying nice things about Hillary.

A statement from the convention called Clinton a "champion for working families and one of the most effective and empathetic voices in the country today."

So she is a champion for us. Ah, that explains why they are having a do-nothing, know-little wifey open the convention with a speech. I mean, talk about sleeping your way to the top!! The only reason Michelle Obama is anywhere near that convention is because she is married to Barack Obama. That's just not good enough.

They will name the keynote speaker at a later date.

Typical. Unsurprising. Sad. (0.00 / 0)
All of those words are what came to mind when I heard this.

Note that Michelle Obama speaking on the night her husband is most likely to be nominated would make sense; Laura Bush spoke, for example, at the RNC in 2000.  (I seem to recall that, anyway, and she definitely spoke in 2004.)  But she didn't upstage anyone and everyone expected her to speak because she was speaking right before her husband.

Hillary Clinton also spoke in 1992 right before her husband, IIRC, and again in 1996.  This is what's expected.

So Michelle Obama speaking by herself on a different day is really unprecedented, and I don't get it.  I'm with FlaDemFem that it appears Mrs. Obama is trying to upstage Senator Clinton.  But I can tell you this -- it won't work.  And those who decided Mrs. Obama was going to speak the first night of the convention will have egg on their collective faces.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

she's got to be better than (0.00 / 0)
theresa hines helm, what a narcissistic bore she was, and her 'son' introduced her i love myself speech with his my mom is better than your mom speech. Had to hold my nose, never have I been so ashamed of one of my own sex.  Michelle isn't taking the place of Hillary, and when Kerry was running Barack got the key note and Theresa got to be the girl.  Michelle needs to show herself to the public as normal, and if anyone compares her with Theresa, she'll look great.   They probably needed a quick fill in for Elizabeth, the wronged woman who conspired with the breck girl to lose the GE.  Hey, as long as both Bill and HIllary are key speakers, and as long as we get Hillary as VP, I have nothing against Michelle trying to redeem herself.  She's not so used to public speaking and she isn't the biggest narcissist on the face of the earth, it'll be hard for her. I hope she does okay.  She's a girl, I wish her well.

I am glad someone diaried this. First the little wives speak, then the big players speak. Nice.

Did Hillary Give A Speech at Either of Bill's Conventions? (0.00 / 0)
Gawd but I seriously doubt it.

The more I hear of MO the less I like her.

I think Senator Clinton did, Alegre. (0.00 / 0)
Usually what happens is that the wife (it's always been the wife, because before Senator Clinton we've only had two viable female candidates for President -- Margaret Chase Smith in 1964 for the Republicans, and Shirley Chisholm in 1972 for the Dems) speaks to introduce her husband, right before the introductory film or whatever.  That's when Hillary Clinton spoke in 1992 and again in 1996.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

I wonder (0.00 / 0)
if she took John Edwards spot. This is an odd thing. Aren't their other Democrats that hold or have held office that should speak instead?

Actually, this isn't unusual (0.00 / 0)
Theresa Heinz Kerry spoke and so did Laura Bush.  There are many instances of spouses having speaking spots at conventions.

IMHO, this is the least of our worries.

There is a raging discussion over at TalkLeft about the same issue:

Heinz Kerry (0.00 / 0)
Yeah, my partner reminded me that THK spoke. I retract my statement. BTW, I liked Theresa better than Kerry and really was voting for her as First Lady. Too bad I don't like either BO or MO.

I couldn't careless of what (0.00 / 0)
MO has to say.

"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. When you stumble, keep faith. When you?re knocked down, get right back up. And NEVER listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on."
