SFGate: 'More Than Half' Roll-Call Signatures Have Been Gathered

by: catfish

Tue Aug 12, 2008 at 15:50:56 PM EDT

SFGate covers the roll-call story today, and tried to contact the Obama campaign for partiality but "The Obama campaign declined to comment on the story."

Still, with Obama on vacation, the Hillary supporters are getting more attention this week. In fact, many are making the (obvious) case that allowing a roll-call vote could work in Democratic Party's favor by building party unity.

Still, "I don't think there's any harm in nominating Sen. Clinton at the convention," said David Serrano Sewell of San Francisco, one of the delegates at the forefront of the signature-gathering movement. "It will acknowledge the success we had, and it will give an opportunity for people to express themselves and get behind Obama and win in November."

Already, he said, Clinton delegates have more than half of the 300 signatures needed to put Clinton's name into nomination - and they fully expect to get more than enough by the time the convention begins in Denver.

We're not the only ones asking why is this even an issue?

Mauro said that because it was such a closely contested election, he is mystified as to why the Obama campaign is resisting and even balking at a roll-call vote, according to some reports.

"Are these folks so new to politics, are they so arrogant, that they think he's different from every other nominee we've ever had?" he asks.

It just seems like a no-brainer. And many sources agree:

And many Democrats suggest that the move to accommodate Clinton's supporters may be politically smart.

"Sen. Clinton is going to do everything she can to make sure Sen. Obama is the next president - and that will include how the convention is handled and the role she plays," says Democratic strategist Chris Lehane, who was a Clinton supporter and a past White House spokesman for Bill Clinton.

But "polls out there show that older women are the potential swing demographic in this election," he said. "It helps Obama and the party ... to have her play a prominent role in the convention."

Well just go read the whole thing.

the only reason I can see for preventing her from the ability to choose 'the unity' vote is that she's going to be the vice presidential candidate. But even that should not make party insiders instruct her delegates to refuse to sign the petition, which only gives her a chance to put her name in contention, it doesn't force her to.

Whatever the reason, it looks like fear. Obama's campaign should be ashamed, all that smearing of her 'intentions' in the primary are proved false though those leaked emails.  And he hit her as if she'd hit him and hard. he had no problem trying to make her unelectable, and his young supporters still hate her, what a divisive way to run his campaign.  I'd like to see his internal emails, how many of his group believed that she's "a monster?' Totally unprofessional and totally unnecessary.

He says he and HIllary are getting along fine, he just won't listen to the rest of us?  Well, that's not his choice, it's the choice of Hillary's delegates, who have the power to make him listen.  I sure hope they're not cowards and I sure hope they trust that HIllary will do what she can to help the DNC ticket win. She's not the saboteur, that's Barack's campaign's mirror image, not her.  This is a moment in history, and those who sign will be seen as heroes and heroines, standing up to the bullies in defense of democracy.

If she is veep, she could soften the rancor (0.00 / 0)
You raise a good point anna. The only reasonable argument for NOT having the vote is if she's his veep. But if that's the case, with the signatures in hand SHE does have the authority to soften the rancor that any vote might inspire.

This is from the same article, three ways she could turn down the vote even IF the signatures are submitted:

Under the rules of the Democratic National Committee, 300 valid delegate signatures are needed in order to place a candidate's name on the ballot - if the candidate agrees to it.

Bob Mulholland, an undecided California superdelegate, said that means "if a candidate's got delegates, then both names can be placed in nomination" - and the losing candidate, in this case Clinton, can declare, " 'Let's make it unanimous.' "

Or Clinton can be nominated and a surrogate speaking on her behalf can say, "The senator has declined, but let's vote on Obama," he noted.

A third option is that she won't allow her name to be nominated at all, he said.

too substantive, they won't buy that, they just 'know' she's out to steal his thunder and make him whimper in fear, she who must be stopped.  And she's so nice, she'd so never do anything to hurt him in the GE at the convention. She suspended, yes, didn't concede, but she's been campaigning for him, do they think she'd do that if she planned to sabotage him? She just knows what it will take for him to win the GE, and it happens to be showing respect to her.  And she wants to get her issues highlighted, she got more than half the votes and her voters voted for her solutions, not her cult status.  So, if she can't be the nom, she'll still try for getting her solutions into the platform.  We'd expect no less. I think guys think we're like them and they can't recognize generosity of spirt and joy in working for what you believe in, with no need for a crown.

Democratic Party vote aversion (0.00 / 0)
Mauro nails it here:

"Are these folks so new to politics, are they so arrogant, that they think he's different from every other nominee we've ever had?" he asks.

How much do we have to scream that this is a democracy! Apparently we need to pump up the volume.

that's what gets me.

Remember my phrase, "Negative political I.Q.?" (0.00 / 0)
Well, it fits.

Remember that I said it first (actually, my Dad did, but who's counting?), before Peggy Noonan uses another of my ideas uncredited.  (I'm the first one on the web, AFAIK, who said "Obama doesn't know what he doesn't know."  She used that in a column just last week.  Maybe she thinks this just evolved out of the ether?)

Seriously, Obama is clueless and/or stupid and doesn't seem to know what the meaning of the word "democracy" is.

Stop the drama, DUMP OBAMA!!!

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.
