These Men Are NOT Our Friends

by: Alegre

Wed Aug 13, 2008 at 14:20:00 PM EDT

I have to admit that when I first heard about the revised abortion plank in our party's platform, I wasn't that alarmed.  Sure they're watering down the language, and by so doing, they watered down the Democratic Party's commitment to defending our right to choose.  But then I remembered the way BHO kissed up to evangelicals, and his weak stand on abortion rights (remember those "present" votes in the IL legislature?).  Here's what the plank used to say...

Because we believe in the privacy and equality of women, we stand proudly for a woman's right to choose, consistent with Roe v. Wade, and regardless of her ability to pay. We stand firmly against Republican efforts to undermine that right. At the same time, we strongly support family planning and adoption incentives. Abortion should be safe, legal, and rare.

And now thanks to the diddling and fiddling by BHO and his new evangelical friends, it reads...

The Democratic Party strongly and unequivocally supports Roe v Wade and a woman's right to choose a safe and legal abortion, regardless of ability to pay, and we oppose any and all efforts to weaken or undermine that right.  The Democratic Party also strongly supports access to affordable family planning services and comprehensive age-appropriate sex education which empower people to make informed choices and live healthy lives. We also recognize that such health care and education help reduce the number of unintended pregnancies and thereby also reduce the need for abortions. The Democratic Party also strongly supports a woman's decision to have a child by ensuring access to and availability of programs for pre and post natal health care, parenting skills, income support, and caring adoption programs.

Make the jump - there's more...

Alegre :: These Men Are NOT Our Friends
Now correct me if I'm wrong here, but there hasn't really been an organized and violent attack on our right to carry a pregnancy to term.  Unless you count deranged boyfriends or ex-husbands who beat the hell out of a woman carrying a fetus so that she mis-carries.  But if they were worried about that they'd be talking about forcing the police and our courts to take domestic violence more seriously.

And if they're worried about pre- and post-natal care, why in the hell aren't they pushing for Hillary's universal healthcare plan with everything at their disposal?

I wasn't alarmed really until I started to put this into context folks.  Remember how BHO played up to the evangelicals by attacking our right to a late-term abortion (feeling blue???!).  And remember how he kissed up to the evangelicals by talking up faith-based initiatives?  Well guess who's grabbed a prime-time speaking slot at our convention?

That's right folks - BHO's using our convention to not only kiss up to the evangelicals by selling out our reproductive rights, but he's getting in yet another dig at Bill by giving the son of a man Bill kept off the podium in '92 because of his anti-choice stand a chance to speak at our convention this year.

It's the return of the Casey's folks.  Check it out...

Anti-abortion senator to speak to Democrats

Sen. Bob Casey of Pennsylvania, a Democrat who opposes abortion rights, will be a featured speaker at the party's national convention, officials said Wednesday.

Casey was set to speak during the convention's session Tuesday night, his office said. He is the son of the late Pennsylvania Gov. Robert P. Casey, who was not given a marquee speaking spot at the 1992 convention because of his anti-abortion views.
...

Casey said in a statement that he was honored to have the opportunity to speak. Neither he nor the Obama campaign indicated what would be the topic of his speech.

I tell ya folks, BHO's determined to shoot himself in the foot when it comes to winning back the millions of women who've walked away from our party over the way Hillary was treated.  Call me fickle, but I don't think this is gonna help!

We need you Hillary!

The DNC doesn't care about women. (0.00 / 0)
If they gave a flying fig about women, they would have said something about the sexism in the primary.  They didn't.  Not once.  (McCain did)

No.  Abortion is just one of those issues that draws a crowd.  Most of them don't give a damn one way or another because if their daughter gets  knocked up, they can go to Canada or wherever for a quiet abortion.

They are using us.

Of course, Slate's 'we love Obama crowd' has a different take. Unnecessarily Evil Reclaiming the morality of abortion and the overdue change to the Democratic platform.

Oh, have I mentioned I can't stand Obama?

Not true...Dems care about women...they're (0.00 / 0)
having an anti-abortionist speak on Women's Night....obviously they care so much for us they want to make sure we're educated and won over by one of these creeps.

God - I hate the Democratic Party and am ashamed that I ever called myself a Democrat.

It will never happen again.

I hate the Democratic Party and am ashamed that I ever called myself a Democrat.

My partner and I were talking about this just last night. She tends to be more lenient on the party than I have been recently, but she made a similar statement that surprised me. We feel so conflicted. All the contempt we had for the Bush Administration these 8 very long years is flowing to the Democratic party. It's sad really.

The party leaders do not realize just how much they are angering women.

They've always used us. (0.00 / 0)
Go into any Democratic Party office during a campaign or between elections and the people you see doing the work are almost all volunteers and almost all women, mostly older women who have done the scut work for years and seldom get any recognition for their efforts.

with obama, everything is negotiable. (0.00 / 0)
that faith-based crap we already know about - he sold out on separation of church and state, and gave control of the delivery of social services over to people with religious agendas. now it's access to reproductive health care that's being bargained away.

we had an early indication of this when he started waffling on what using the words "late-term" instead of "third trimester", and said that psychological distress wasn't a sufficient consideration in determining whether women would have access to reproductive health care services. it looks like he's a flat-out anti-choice candidate.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

The hypocrisy (0.00 / 0)
of the Obots who wave around Roe v Wade, screaming "SCOTUS" "SCOTUS" -- they don't see the clear and present danger that Obama is to women's reproductive freedoms.

So they no longer believe in privacy and equality of women (0.00 / 0)
which is just like the paternalistic Casey and I fear, the paternalistic attitude of Obama himself.

He doesn't Fail to ABHOR me, each and every day (0.00 / 0)
News article out on Rocky Mountain NeWS.

The TIcke to his "coronation" at the STADIUM, comes with a PRICE,

People aren't real happy. It should have been said, before the bribery was set in, NOT AFTER.

Apparently, they have to donate so many hours to campaigning for HIM< and the just MAYBE, they'll get the tickets.

Interesting READ:.

Prayers for our Arkansas Delegate, I'm glad they got the guy, we'll find out the truth, (some of it anyway), why he did what he did and why to this particular person.

STay STRONG, it's gonna be a LONGGGGGG  TWO WWEEEEKS<
And I"m all for boycotting the Convention, if HRC isn't in the nomination.

I would (0.00 / 0)
suggest that these men have never been our friends. They said and did what they found necessary to get our votes.   And after seeing it as an issue that cost them votes from Catholics and Evangelicals they are perfectly willing to abandon a woman's right to have control over her own body.

As long as religion is allowed to pollute our politics there will never be equal rights for women. Religion is paternalistic.

Women of all ages, not just the older ones that have been down this road before, had better start paying attention.

Women's rights are human rights only so long as we elect people to public office that agree.

Casey to speak at the Convention is a deliberate stick in Bill Clinton's eye.

What the Corporate Media and the Democratic Leadership and the DNC seem to all have forgotten in their rush to anoint Obama is that unless and until Obama is elected president, Bill Clinton is still the  head of the Democratic Party. Obama is the presumptuous nominee. He's the head of nothing!

One thing I will say for the Republicans, toxic as Bush and Cheney are, they are still treated with respect as befits their office if not them personally.

Democrats? They treat their former president like shit.

I am also troubled (0.00 / 0)
about this language being removed from the platform:

Because we believe in the privacy and equality of women

I guess the Democratic party no longer believes in our privacy and equality.

Fox announcing that Colin Powell will be a surprise speaker (0.00 / 0)
endorsing Obama at the convention. This via Bill Kristol on Fox news.

Yep, I double checked (0.00 / 0)
From FOX:

Former Secretary of State Colin Powell will endorse Barack Obama at the Democratic National Convention, Weekly Standard Publisher Bill Kristol told FOX News exclusively on Thursday.

"He may well give a speech at the Democratic convention explaining his endorsement of Obama," Kristol said, citing inside sources.

An endorsement by Powell could go a long way to attracting moderates and wayward Republicans to the presumptive Democratic presidential candidate.
