BREAKING! Hillary's Going for It Folks! UPDATE

by: Alegre

Thu Aug 14, 2008 at 12:01:17 PM EDT

Update by NH: Official BS News Release Statement wherein the Os try and convince the world this was their idea.

Since June, Senators Obama and Clinton have been working together to ensure a Democratic victory this November. They are both committed to winning back the White House and to to ensuring that the voices of all 35 million people who participated in this historic primary election are respected and heard in Denver. To honor and celebrate these voices and votes, both Senator Obama's and Senator Clinton's names will be placed in nomination.

"I am convinced that honoring Senator Clinton's historic campaign in this way will help us celebrate this defining moment in our history and bring the party together in a strong united fashion," said Senator Barack Obama.

Senator Obama's campaign encouraged Senator Clinton's name to be placed in nomination as a show of unity and in recognition of the historic race she ran and the fact that she was the first woman to compete in all of our nation's primary contests.

"With every voice heard and the Party strongly united, we will elect Senator Obama President of the United States and put our nation on the path to peace and prosperity once again," said Senator Hillary Clinton.

Senator Obama and Senator Clinton are looking forward to a convention unified behind Barack Obama as the Party's nominee and to victory this fall for America.

Marc Ambinder broke the story this morning that Hillary will "in all likelihood" agree to have her name put into nomination at the convention.  While I was running around with my hair on fire, New Hampster found confirmation of this on Ben Smiths website.

CLINTON IN NOMINATION

A Clinton aide confirms Marc Ambinder's report that Hillary's name will be placed into nomination at the convention, giving her a larger procedural and symbolic role during the event, and offering a look backward at her near-miss primary.

(Marc and Ben if you're reading this - you ROCK for confirming this for us!)

Now I'm not sure about how this is being reported, as a way for us to look back at her "near-miss primary" because at this point, nothing's set in stone.  Neither candidate has the pledged delegates to take the nomination from the other so everything's in play until they actually vote folks.  THAT's why it's so important that we keep after the delegates and the superdelegates to sign the nominating petition and then get to Denver to vote for Hillary.

We all know that the state party Chairs are putting pressure on delegates to NOT sign off on the nominating petition, yet (as Ambinder reports below the fold here) Camp BHO are claiming that they've said all along that they're ok with Hillary being on the ballot.  This is BS and it's time we called them out on it and started hammering away at the state party chairs to stop hassling their delegates.

Make the jump for Ambinder's initial report.

Alegre :: BREAKING! Hillary's Going for It Folks! UPDATE
Clinton's Name Likely To Be Placed In Nomination; Agreement Near With Obama Campaign

According to several people who have spoken with her, Clinton originally believed that if her name were included in the roll call on Wednesday, August 27, she would inevitably wind up with fewer delegates than the 1896.5 she earned from the primaries. That would look bad and could demoralize her supporters.
...

But within the past week, Clinton advisers informed the Obama team that many of Clinton's staunchest supporters felt strongly that something had to be done, and that Clinton had concluded that, in part for the sake of unity, their wishes ought to be respected.  They heard back immediately: the Obama campaign had always been open to having her name placed in nomination alongside his.

If Clinton's name is formally offered up, she could be afforded the normal complement of nominating and seconding speeches, and the official role call of votes will include participation from her delegates.  (In theory, if enough Obama delegates change their minds, then Clinton could win the nomination. In practice, there's no chance that will happen.)

On August 6, Clinton told donors at a private fundraiser that she thinks "that people want to feel like, O.K., it's a catharsis, we're here, we did it, and then everybody get behind Senator Obama. That is what most people believe is the best way to go."
...

Obama's convention spokesperson, Jenny Backus, did not respond to e-mail seeking comment.

Here's the money quote / paragraph from Marc Ambinder's article...

"But within the past week, Clinton advisers informed the Obama team that many of Clinton's staunchest supporters felt strongly that something had to be done, and that Clinton had concluded that, in part for the sake of unity, their wishes ought to be respected. They heard back immediately: the Obama campaign had always been open to having her name placed in nomination alongside his."

NOTE that last sentence. BHO's claiming they've always been ok with her being on the ballot but out of the other side of thier mouth they're telling state party chairs to block all efforts to get her name on the ballot. They say one thing (they're ok with it) but then turn around and DO everything in their power to keep it from happening.

Ok so your marching orders now folks is to HIT THE PHONES and contact the Democratic Party Chair in your state.  Make sure they know that Hillary's going for it and that BHO agrees that she should be on the ballot.  Ask them to stop blocking the democratic rights of Hillary's delegates to sign this petition and then go to Denver to vote for her.

We've jumped over one hurdle - Hillary wants her name on that ballot.  Let's make sure we get more than enough signatures on the nominating petition.  More than enough!

we know it took him some time to realize that her candidacy is historic and her supporters deserve to celebrate her and what she's accomplished, for us, and that's just so far, more to come.  We know because he'd been trying to duck her, thinking he needed to have his uncontested moment, and because he said that he didn't think catharsis was necessary.  But, he changed his mind, and that's a good sign, that he recognizes she's only an asset and she's entirely trustworthy.

I wonder if it was the Atlantic Monthly email story that showed she tried to navigate a run for the highest office without diminishing Barack or hurting his GE chances if were to win.  I bet he also believed that hype about her, he  said she'd do anything to win,  and now he knows he was wrong and short-changed her, and on many occasions.

But this does mean that Hillary will not win the nomination, even though having the vote makes it possible, she won't do that, she'll make sure that that doesn't happen.  She has a bigger picture at stake that is not fracturing the party at this point and giving the news organizations a chance to depress us for the next few months.

It also means that Hillary, in whatever position, hopefully vice president, has won over her opponents, has reached across to her detractors and has made peace with justice.

She's really an amazing person, arguable the smarted person in Washington, clearly the most presidential.  So in the way that matters, she's won every round.

I absolutely disagree. Hillary needs to accept, for the party, and for the country. It is her greatest call to service.

"But, he changed his mind, and that's a good sign, that he recognizes she's only an asset and she's entirely trustworthy."

Uh, no.  This is a huy who thinks it's a good idea to sideline the Chairman of the Ways and Means Committee.  He's not chnaged his mind, he's not seeing things differently.  She clearly has or is close to the 300 delegate signature, has confirmed she would sign it, and he doesn't want to look like a fool when it becomes apparent he had no control over the situation.

And, in no way will she make sure she doesn't (0.00 / 0)
become the nominee.  The nomination is completely dependent on the votes of the SDs.  They and Obama will make sure she doesn't become the nominee.  She doesn't control the outcome.  They do.  If they said Hillary we've decided you'd make the better nominee, she wouldn't refuse.  i really don't understand your logic here at all.  We can accept the supers will nominate Obama but to somehow suggest this is because Hillary will make sure they do, is just unfounded.

supposedly, they'll announce it later today. (0.00 / 0)
The decision was reached this week, according to Democratic officials, and will be announced later today. It comes after long negotiations on both sides, with many backers of Mrs. Clinton vigorously pushing for her candidacy to be validated by giving her delegates the chance to support her through a roll call vote.

We've continued to fight, and we will continue to fight.  I'm glad we have so many fighters available!

Sent a bunch more e-mail to the supers today and will be calling the various heads of state Democratic Parties tomorrow, starting with my own -- WisDems.  I want to make sure that Marilyn Nemeth votes for Clinton on the first ballot; she is supposedly my delegate, right?  Well, she'd best act like it.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

[ Parent ]
Called WisDems today. (0.00 / 0)
Got a very polite young man who admitted he's an Obama supporter, but he said the delegates should vote for whom they are pledged.  He said he'd be mad in my shoes, too, and he didn't sound at all pleased with the national party apparatus.  (This is the second person at WisDems who's mentioned that Donna B. just has to go.  Which, of course, I go right along with, considering the diary I wrote about her comments a few weeks ago.)

I think we all need to remind our pledged Clinton delegates that they represent us.  And if they're going to the convention merely to get some free food and party, while casting a vote for Obama when they're supposed to be supporting us and we did not then and do not now support Obama, well . . . there will be even more Hell to pay.

PUMA!

Stop the drama, DUMP OBAMA!!!

Oh, what do you know, the Obama campaign agrees with placing Clinton's name in nomination alongside Obama's. Too bad for all the naysaysers that claimed this would ruin the unity of the world for all of mankind. Oh well, by this point, they are too used to changing their positions on a dime to placate their nonsense much:
In negotiations this summer with Obama's campaign, Clinton's team did not ask for Clinton's name to be submitted.

That sentiment is shared by Obama advisers, even as reports of tension between her aides and Obama's campaign have proliferated in the press.

The claims against having the vote were one of the most asinine and historically ignorant arguments ever I'd heard, a byproduct of continued Clinton hatred. Glad its over. The nomination of also-rans is a traditional formality.

But I still don't trust BO in all this. You know he's scared to death just because of the lengths the DNC, the state party chairs, Dean, et al, are going to to keep us from getting 300 signers to the petition. I also didn't like this part of the article Alegre quoted: "giving her a larger procedural and symbolic role during the event." I wouldn't put it past BO to allow a symbolic roll call vote and nothing else, and then try to convince everyone he is playing fair. Let's not forget: BO does NOT ever play fair. He is not a fair person. He is a corrupt empty suit who will do what he has to to win. We all know how he's been exchanging his own delegates for Hillary's in Florida. Who wants to bet that he's been doing that in a lot of states? Delegates can vote for anyone they want.  They do not have to be released because they are free to vote for anyone.

If Hillary did not release her delegates, they could still vote for Obama, Edwards, or Mickey Mouse if they chose to (and some have voted for fictional characters at past conventions).
