I Firmly Believe Hillary Would Serve if Nominated, and Would Support an Open Vote If Allowed

Speaking only for myself, I think all the indications are that Hillary would support a free and open vote at the convention, and that if nominated, she would serve.  Hillary didn't end up on that ballot because down deep Obama is a really decent guy, or because the DNC decided to allow catharsis at the Democratic convention.  She's on that ballot, because she was smart enough to say what we were all thinking... on camera, ie candidates with delegates are always on the ballot at our conventions, and it's not up to me[Hillary], it's up to the delegates.
masslib :: I Firmly Believe Hillary Would Serve if Nominated, and Would Support an Open Vote If Allowed
What happened after that is pretty clear.  The delegates had an aha moment.  They realized they had the power by virtue of their representation of the most Democratic votes in the history of Democratic primaries to put their candidate up for nomination.  Obama, seeing he couldn't stop the delegates, co-opted their position, and no doubt has coordinated with his delegates, pledged and super, to support him at the convention and assure he will win the vote, which is fine.  He can't nominate himself.  Ultimately, the supers will nominate our nominee and if they are content with Obama then they will vote for him at the convention.  I believe if Hillary is convinced that the supers are steadfast in their decision to support Obama, she will release her delegates and announce she will vote for Obama before the roll call, which will make the process symbolic, unlike say FDR's nomination roll call votes.  It is entirely within her rights to do so.

But, again speaking only for myself, I do not think Hillary Clinton is a quitter.  I think she walks into this convention with the popular vote, nearly as many pledged delegates as Obama, the winner of the big electorals, the swing states and the swing groups, and the winner of each of the final four months of the nominating process.  Should she believe that the supers are up for a free and fair vote, I think she will support the candidate who she believes would be the best president and whom she believes is best positioned to beat McCain in November...herself.  Under this scenario, I believe Hillary will allow the voters in this country to see sausage being made.  She will vote for herself.  She will not release her delegates.  And, she will let the chips fall.

Ok, I just had to get that off my chest.

you're right about that. (0.00 / 0)
obama didn't do this out of the kindness of his heart. he was hoping he could intimidate enough delegates into not signing the petition, or intimidate hillary into not agreeing to have her name placed into nomination when presented with the petition.

that little haka didn't fly with the delegates, and it SURE didn't fly with hillary. he knows they'll do it, and he'll look like the anti-democratic chicago politician he is when it happens over his objections. so he rolled over. i bet he's pissed.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Outraged, I'm sure. He's used to elections without (0.00 / 0)
competition.

I wish that weren't true (0.00 / 0)
but I have to agree. He did his best to subvert it, he said we should get over it, he said we don't need catharsis, so it does look like he had no other choice.  Hillary would never have made a statement about how she were planning to vote, that does not sound at all like her.  She gets her moment, and we get to celebrate, and he'll get his.  She wouldn't make our moment about him.

I agree. If it looks favorable, then Hillary will go for it. If nominated, she will accept and serve our country. She has every right to and I hope like hell she does. Go Hillary!

If the situation were reversed, Obama, with cheering supporters in tow, would go for it. May the strongest candidate win the delegate vote -- Hillary Clinton.

It wouldn't have to look favorable, just possible. (0.00 / 0)
Hillary has never shied from competition.  :)

they're just jealous ;-) (0.00 / 0)
these are the same idiots who were swearing not six months ago "blood would flow in the streets" in denver if hillary "stole" the nomination. they're jealous that we get to riot, and they're stuck defending the status quo.

it's like we get to be the indians and ride around in circles whooping, and they have to lie under the wagons and get all dirty. they should have chosen to be indians, not cowboys. we're having more fun than they are, poor babies;-)

Hillary would serve if nominated. And an open vote is jsut what is needed. I have been reading one too many stories about delegates being intimidated (Hurrah for Sasha Millstone!) It is getting very very edgy.

Today's news I will take as a sign that Democracy may break out if we all keep working at it!

Hillary's not into .... (0.00 / 0)
...fixing the game. She does not expect to have the popular perception overturned, but if asked, she'd serve.  Who knows how it would have turned out if Florida and Michigan had counted, if the press hadn't been so overwhelmingly biased, until after Barack called it for himself, and if the DNC hadn't called a halt before the convention. Had the super's decided based on their reationale, it would have had to be her. she won the popular vote and a big majority of registered Democrats and she won big in the swing states. There were quite a few citizens who hoped her brand of competence, experience, and what she stood for would get a chance to run this country properly (or as best possible). We were lucky that she was interested, and i can't imagine getting anyone like Hillary again. She hadn't started out with that ambition to rule, and she didn't get that ambition either. Her ambition is to serve the public, and she got the 'bug' to get the right personnel who would do the most effective job of making government work again. She thinks government can work, and since we've never had a president who thought so or cared much, it would have been the nicest and bestest thing ever. My prediction was that we'd only hire those that reminded us of HIllary, after her two terms were up.

But, the system is biased, and she's a very long shot to be the candidate, but there is absolutely no doubt that if asked, she'd serve.  She can't help herself, she's a compulsive do-gooder, and she's soooo good at doing good.

Exactly. She wouldn't allow a fixed vote for her beefit. (0.00 / 0)
But if the delegates wanted atruly open vote she wouldn't stop them.

that woiuld be 'fixing' it too (0.00 / 0)
fix for or against, that's maybe the only kind of fix she's not interested in.

one of the things this also does (0.00 / 0)
is it legitimizes obama's victory here.  Catharsis was an interesting choice of words.  Even though Obama is not up to any challenges, it is only through being challenged that people, the odd Clinton supporter, if not all, can learn to respect him.

Right now Obama worrying about looking weak all the time is just making him look weaker to anyone, at this time, unconverted.

I agree with everything above I just wanted to add this to it.  Whatever happens, Clinton is forcing Obama to recognize process that was put in place to make candidates stronger.  Good for her.  Obama needs more of that kind of support.

Emailing Pollsters (0.00 / 0)
Much to my surprise I got a response from Rasmussen.  they directed me to a poll they did yesterday, but it only asked if this will unify the party.

I explained that I would like to see a head to head with McCain.

I also found results of a July 15th poll that shows she does better than Obama:

"However, McCain fares better against Obama than he does against two other prominent Democrats. New York Senator Hillary Clinton leads McCain by eight points, 50% to 42%. Former Vice President Al Gore, the Democratic presidential nominee in 2000, leads McCain 50% to 43%.

These numbers help explain why Election 2008 is competitive even though events so heavily favor the Democrats -- because the Republicans are on course to nominate their strongest possible general election candidate but the Democrats are not. Perhaps even more importantly, the data suggests that voters don't see a potential McCain Administration as the third term of President Bush.

In all five hypothetical match-ups featured in this article, the Democrat leads the Republican among unaffiliated voters. In the match-up between the two presumptive nominees, McCain holds a slight edge over Obama among those voters."

"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. When you stumble, keep faith. When you?re knocked down, get right back up. And NEVER listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on."
