Gay and Lesbian Stricken From DNC Platform (Update) DOMA repeal in!

by: masslib

Fri Aug 15, 2008 at 18:04:59 PM EDT

Hey all you progressive Democrat's who faulted Hillary for blocking efforts to amend the US Constitution to ban marriage equality by helping to craft DOMA, who told me Obama was so supportive of marriage equality he was simply going to ban the word marriage from the federal government(I kid you not, there were Bot's who actually told me this), who argued passionately Obama was going to completely repeal DOMA,...you reap what you sow. Check out your new Party platform.  Via Mark Ambinder

My National Journal colleague Jonathan Rauch notices that the words "gay and lesbian" have been stricken from the Democratic platform. The verb is used avisedly. We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families. That's basically what was changed in the draft platform. The 2004 version of that sentence includes "gay and lesbian" ; the 2008 version of that sentence does not. Indeed, the DNC platform does not mention the word "gay."

Still think your guy is going the full monty on DOMA(personally this pander was not politically feasible, the Courts will eventually do this with the marriage rights of MA and CA permanently in place, but the Bot's were like totally sure the guy who campaigned with Donnie McClurkin was going to hold to this promise, so...)  By the way, while we are dialouging here, progressives, any word yet on which high profile gay or lesbian will be speaking at the Convention?  There sure are a hell of alot of good speakers to choose from.  There's Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, or my great Congressman Barney Frank, just to name two.  I know, you'll get back to me on that.

Update: Platform revised, thank God. DOMA repeal included:

It is not enough to look back in wonder at how far we have come; those who came before us did not strike a blow against injustice only so that we would allow injustice to fester in our time. That means removing the barriers of prejudice and misunderstanding that still exist in America. We support the full inclusion of all families, including same-sex couples, in the life of our nation, and support equal responsibility, benefits, and protections. We will enact a comprehensive bipartisan employment non-discrimination act. We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts to use this issue to divide us.

Good news. Not sure what happened between this morning and now, but I'm happy to see this. Link

Update II:  Tammy Baldwin will speak Tuesday night.  Several additional speakers have been added to Tuesday's schedule, for a total of 19.

Donna doesn't like them. Not one bit. (0.00 / 0)
They make "civil rights" less ..civil. I would have been very surprised if she didn't mix her little lovable self in this particular pot.

They changed it to something better (0.00 / 0)
(I am so excited to post here !) Yeah, I saw that the other day and I was so mad but they published the final draft and it is different. It is on the same blog. http://marcambinder.theatlanti...                                            Now they talk about "same-sex couples" in the family section. And for what it is worth they repeat they want DOMA repeal.  Thank GOD they have Hillary people on the committee to fight for all sexual orientations !

Thanks! I updated. (0.00 / 0)

hint to slow learners: donnie mcculkin was a BIG clue... (0.00 / 0)
...about GLBT issues' place in the obama campaign. check out obama's evangelical wing - the "matthew 25" movement. the biblical reference is to the bible chapter where they separate the sheep from the goats. guess who the goats are, folks. baaaa.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Seeupdate, they have revised the platform thank goodness. (0.00 / 0)

Seriously? So they're dog whistling the homophobe fundies (0.00 / 0)
I would say that's unbelievable, but it's unfortunately very believable. This should get press, though.

Gay and Lesbian struck From DNC Platform (0.00 / 0)
Given Obama's coziness to the Gay haters out there, is this really a surprise to anyone? He has give us screaming clues to his real position on this all along.
If you ask Rev Farrakhan--(Obama's other buddy besides the hateful Rev Wright)the official position of Islam toward homosexuality, you will find that the only acceptable place for people of divergent sexuality is the grave.   Obama's other name is Barry Soetoro and he lived for some time in Indonesia. It is not too much of a stretch to think that some of that countries attitudes toward the gay community has rubbed off on him.  Indonesia outlaws homosexuality and punishes homosexuals, as do most Muslim countries. Obama is now trying to show the American Evangelicals he can out-gay-bash them and thereby win their votes. How Joe Solomnese from the HRC, or any true Democrat for that matter, can endorse this monster is more than I can bear.

I step away (0.00 / 0)
from the Corner for an afternoon and almost lose my place as a lesbian on the party platform. Well, actually, I did. I'm now party of "same-sex couple" -- eyeroll. I was beginning to worry that I might have to join the Log Cabin Republicans, since it's sounding like my party is throwing us queers under the bus and morphing into the Republican Party.

Yes, but the new stuff if pretty good for the Dem's. (0.00 / 0)
I don't think DOMA will be fully repealed yet, but it's good to see it in the platform.  This is much better than it was this morning at least.  Personally, I prefer "marriage equality" to same-sex or"gay" marriage.  That's what we call it in MA because after all it's just regular marriage, but this at least heads in the right direction.  The bit this morning was disgusting.

A bit testy (0.00 / 0)
I'm feeling a bit testy about the changes here and to the women's reproductive freedom. I would feel more comfortable with these changes with Hillary at the helm because I absolutely trust that she honors women and LGBT issues. She isn't going to throw me under the bus. I don't trust Obama, so these changes make me nervous.

Did you hear John McCain ? (0.00 / 0)
Yeah the Obama/DNC coalition are too prone to throwing gay and lesbian Americans under the bus but did you hear McCain ? He was saying Tom Ridge is acceptable to Republicans even though he is pro-life because they are "open to various ideas" but Bloomberg would not be OK with Republicans because he is not only pro-life but I quote "he is pro-gay rights and that's unacceptable". Being for rights for gays is unacceptable to the Republican party and John McCain ? Hell no. That is why we are fighting to change the misdirected and mislead DNC back to the real roots of Democratic ideas. But Log Cabin Republicans belong to an anti-gay anti-women party and that's a completely different ballpark. There is a reason for which HILLARY has been a Democrat ALL HER LIFE and even now she is fighting for the party even after the way she has been treated. Republicans are NOT Ok. And I am very proud that the Clinton forces in the platform committee helped improve it !

You mean Ridge is pro-choice, don't you? (0.00 / 0)
His buddy Lieberman is pro-choice, too.  The Republican party has been hijacked by the religious anti-choice bunch of wierdoes, and we have been hijacked by the Obama freaks.  Is Ridge anti gays and lesbians?

Sounds like we need (0.00 / 0)

I wasn't serious (0.00 / 0)
about joining the Log Cabin Republicans. I just see the party I've supported for 20 years, the party that use to stand up for women's rights and gay rights, start to shy away from voicing this support. I'm sad about it and feel like a women without a party.

My only guess, masslib, is . . . (0.00 / 0)
. . . that Senator Clinton and other high-ranking Dems (including Barney Frank and Tammy Baldwin) got really mad, and started sending pointed comments to the effect of, "Do you really want to lose?  Do you?  Well, keep it up, then."

Really, the current neo-lib makeup of the party formerly known as Democratic has kicked out way too much of its base already; they can't afford to kick out the LGBT contingent altogether, or they'll have nothing.  (Granted, they shouldn't kick out anyone.  Wasn't the old-fashioned Democratic Party known as the "big tent party" for a reason?)  And of course that lawsuit is progressing through the courts by the former head of the GLBT outreach for the DNC against the DNC (they fired him for spurious reasons and have done their best to keep him from finding any other work commensurate with his experience) . . . really and truly, the DNC could not afford any more bad publicity on this issue.  That's why the reversal.

That, and a few well-placed politicians pointing out how stupid this original platform plank was.  (More of Obama's campaign's negative political I.Q. at work, most definitely.)

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Oh but he ran a great campaign (0.00 / 0)
don't ya know? So that means he can't have a negative political I.Q. It also means he has experience.

It is really amazing that it takes a minority candidate to wipe out all (0.00 / 0)
the victories minorities have fought for all these years.  I wonder when blacks are going to figure out they had better watch their backs when Obama is in the room. How ironic.  The supposed most sensitive to issues like this, turns out to be the least supportive.  Heh.

All you little weenie followers of Obama, all those who like to call others bigoted and racist, I hope you all get hit  full on in the face with all his hypocracy and anti democratic values that you helped along with all of your adoration, and stupidity.  Before this is all over, you all will be part of the DINO party.  Democratic in name only Party.

Alright now I am really pissed. (0.00 / 0)
I'd been hearing about this and was thinking I should reach out to Gary Shay (sp).  He and I went a few rounds early in the primaries but I just heard recently that he was trying to push the GLBT platform but HD didn't want to hear about it.

I think the woman who is second in charge of the convention is playing a much bigger roll then she should.  I suppose I'm going to have to bring my Militant Homosexual t-shirt to Denver now.  The have crossed the line.  She said that gay rights would interferewith civil rights.

couples only? (0.00 / 0)

So I'm gay but I have no rights except marriage rights? Gay and single means I am erased in the name of Unity?

Howard Dean in his deposition said, to paraphrase, "the other side (Donna and her homophobes) felt that LGBT rights were distracting from the dignity of civil rights."

Just shoot me -- no -- really.  You might as well just shoot this queer's a$$ cause the Dems are done with trying to protect me.  Open season.
.

Distracting from the dignity of civil rights???? (0.00 / 0)
Gay rights are civil rights, Howard, you totally worthless hack.
