| Hey all you progressive Democrat's who faulted Hillary for blocking efforts to amend the US Constitution to ban marriage equality by helping to craft DOMA, who told me Obama was so supportive of marriage equality he was simply going to ban the word marriage from the federal government(I kid you not, there were Bot's who actually told me this), who argued passionately Obama was going to completely repeal DOMA,...you reap what you sow. Check out your new Party platform. Via Mark Ambinder: My National Journal colleague Jonathan Rauch notices that the words "gay and lesbian" have been stricken from the Democratic platform. The verb is used avisedly. We support full inclusion of gay and lesbian families in the life of our nation and seek equal responsibilities, benefits, and protections for these families. That's basically what was changed in the draft platform. The 2004 version of that sentence includes "gay and lesbian" ; the 2008 version of that sentence does not. Indeed, the DNC platform does not mention the word "gay." Still think your guy is going the full monty on DOMA(personally this pander was not politically feasible, the Courts will eventually do this with the marriage rights of MA and CA permanently in place, but the Bot's were like totally sure the guy who campaigned with Donnie McClurkin was going to hold to this promise, so...) By the way, while we are dialouging here, progressives, any word yet on which high profile gay or lesbian will be speaking at the Convention? There sure are a hell of alot of good speakers to choose from. There's Tammy Baldwin of Wisconsin, or my great Congressman Barney Frank, just to name two. I know, you'll get back to me on that. Update: Platform revised, thank God. DOMA repeal included: It is not enough to look back in wonder at how far we have come; those who came before us did not strike a blow against injustice only so that we would allow injustice to fester in our time. That means removing the barriers of prejudice and misunderstanding that still exist in America. We support the full inclusion of all families, including same-sex couples, in the life of our nation, and support equal responsibility, benefits, and protections. We will enact a comprehensive bipartisan employment non-discrimination act. We oppose the Defense of Marriage Act and all attempts to use this issue to divide us. Good news. Not sure what happened between this morning and now, but I'm happy to see this. Link Update II: Tammy Baldwin will speak Tuesday night. Several additional speakers have been added to Tuesday's schedule, for a total of 19. http://www.talkleft.com/story/2008/8/16/131526/678#8 |
