WomenCount.org / What's Your Point Honey?

by: Alegre

Sat Aug 16, 2008 at 00:14:20 AM EDT

The Firesign Theatre once asked "how can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?"  Well that sketch suddenly popped in to my tired head tonight because I just got an invite to a reception launching this amazing new group called WomenCount.org.  Hillary will be there and so will one of my new heroes - Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones.  I'm eating my heart out because (appropriately enough) this event will be held with Hillary and Congresswoman Tubbs Jones in Denver, on the 88th anniversary of women's victory in the fight to win the vote.

Contrary to Cheeto rumors, I won't be in Denver for the convention or this reception.  My son starts Kindergarten on the 26th so even if we could afford the trip, I'd still be right here at home to take him to the corner with his big sister, and snap a picture of him as he's climbing aboard the bus.  My little guy's worked long and hard to get ready for the big day, and a lot of the programs he's gotten help through over the past 4 years were put in place or funded thanks in part to Hillary's hard work.

So I took a look at the new website for WomenCount.org and they've put together a great organization here in just a few short months.  Linked at the front page is this kick-@ss trailer for a video - What's Your Point Honey...

Alegre :: WomenCount.org / What's Your Point Honey?
Here's a bit about that video from their website...

Talk about a match made in heaven! The minute the filmmakers of "What's Your Point, Honey?",  Susan Toeffler and Amy Sewell, read about WomenCount, and visa versa, we were on the phone and on e-mail looking for  ways to collaborate! If you were to ask each of our organizations what the "end game" is, we would say roughly the same thing: It's about getting more women into the political process in a permanent and meaningful way.

We all believe that many of the critical issues so pervasive in the U.S. today are issues that women in power (read: politics) would focus on immediately and bring longer-term solutions to bear. Health care, child care, college tuition, public education, welfare reform, and equal pay - these are feminist issues.

Here's a bit of info on WomenCount.org from their About Us page...

WomenCount is a non-profit political organization that gives women of all generations and backgrounds from around the country a powerful voice in the political process. Our organization has two arms: a 527 that will conduct issue-related campaigns and a PAC that will raise and donate funds to candidates for office.
...

We are often asked whether we have made an endorsement in the presidential election. We have decided to hold off for now - not because we're avoiding it, but because we do not want that to be our focus. Instead, we want to shine the spotlight on the critical issues that emerged from the primary. Thus, our "stop the silence" campaign. Once we've achieved our goals on that issue, we'll turn to you for advice on what to tackle next.

WomenCount PAC was created in May 2008, in direct response to calls for Hillary Clinton to bow out of the presidential primary contest. Our first ad, "Not So Fast," ran in several national and local newspapers and earned enormous press attention, establishing WomenCount PAC as a major voice for women in the campaign and the political process.

In the weeks that followed, WomenCount PAC collected thousands of supporters, raised $500,000, launched three advertising campaigns, and donated to several woman candidates for Congress. We continued to receive significant press attention.

We are excited about beginning this new chapter in our story, and we encourage you to join our movement -- so that your vote will count and your voice will be heard.

Here's who we are:

Susie Tompkins Buell...
Rosemary Camposano (Communications Director, WomenCount)...
Jehmu Greene (Political Director, WomenCount)...
Stacy Mason (Executive Director, WomenCount)...
Amy Rao...

One more thing about Stephanie Tubbs Jones...  She's been one of Hillary's strongest supporters, so hey if you have a few bucks to spare, send the good Congresswoman some love.  She's taking an awful lot of heat from the bad guys because of her support of Hillary and we need to let her know we've got her back just like we have Hillary's.  DONATE HERE.

And Hillary still needs our help to retire her debt.  Someone's already posted this here today but if you meant to kick in a few bucks but then got sidetracked by a phone call or whatever, please consider donating.  DONATE HERE!  You could win a chance to meet her in Denver during the convention!

Truly wonderful (0.00 / 0)
"Someone's daughter right now will be president."

Thank you for sharing this video.

There's a lovely shot of the young girls running up to stand next to the wax(?) figurine of Sen. Clinton.

(as a humorous aside, you could argue for 43 women presidents simply by the size of the hole 43 men have put us in.)

Someone's Daughter (0.00 / 0)
Not sure I could watch my wee girl go through what they've put Hillary through though.

Mrs. Rodham must have avoided the news like the plague during the past 18 months.  Lots of films, books on tape, visits with her amazing family... ANYthing but the talking heads going blah blah blah 24/7.

Now I know why they say politics is a blood sport (0.00 / 0)
As a parent myself, I don't know how any other mother could watch their daughter (or son) go through what Hillary endured.

I can't fathom what parents feel watching democratic politicians be destroyed by the media. We've seen Carter, Mondale, Dukakis, Gore, and Kerry all be torn apart on the national stage.

I don't believe any of the attention phased her at all. She is too strong for that.

Through all this, I have begun to wonder whether Hillary Clinton is the Moses of our time?

Should we be unsuccessful in Denver, perhaps it was her destiny to lead young women to the promise land, yet she herself could not enter.

I firmly believe she put 18 million cracks in the glass ceiling, and if not her, some woman will pick up where she left off.

I'm sorry you can't be in two places (0.00 / 0)
they are two great events, but, I'd stay home too if I were you, it's a very big day for a little fellow and he needs his mum to share it with.

Hillary - alternative energy

He's Worked So Hard To Reach This Point (0.00 / 0)
Infants and Toddlers program when he was just 18 months old.

Then three years of pre-school through the PEP program.

Those amazing therapists and teachers have worked their magic and now he's ready to tackle Kindergarten with the rest of the 5 year olds in our community.

He's come a long way baby!  And I couldn't be prouder of him if I tried.

Heaps of thanks (0.00 / 0)
This 60-something of years guy thinks that's a great organization/website and that you must be a great mom.

I could pile-on more, but am afraid of making a fool of myself.

Ahh Go On - I Don't Mind :) (0.00 / 0)
Really - I don't!

Seriously - this is an organization that'll be around for years to come.  Another EMILY's List has got to be a good thing and it sounds like that's going to be a big focus for this new group.

Fair play to them!

I'm beginning to sense (0.00 / 0)
that the world may about to experience a new renaissance led greatly by wonderful capable women. And I'm loving it.

When Hillary gets the Presidency, I envision the renaissance accelerating internationally. There have been other woman heads of state, but not yet in our nation, again the "temple of liberty and beacon of hope."

(Of course, you don't mind me making a fool of myself. I shall probably remain cautious for a while longer.) :)

Has the ERA passed yet? (0.00 / 0)

[ Parent ]
No. Because (0.00 / 0)
we are still fighting the American Revolutionary war.

The strategy of our enemy changed after we won the so-called "civil war," and the American System of political economy was spreading all around the world... Japan, Russia, Germany, China and elsewhere. The British system of the Anglo-Dutch financier oligarchy (typical: The East India Trading Company) basically owned the world via their sea-power. The American System was developing (and DEVELOPING is one of the key concepts here) rail corridors and other technologies all over the world that challenged that power. So they stirred up what came to be called WWI and WWII. Strategy and tactics changed to more dependence on "dirty tricks" -- corrupting institutions and cultures from within, rather than outright acts of war;  today's wars are, in spite of appearances, much more of a stirring things up (inciting regional chaos) to stop development -- nature than nations fighting over territory.

I'm trying to say that we are not moving ahead because we have been corrupted intentionally from within. Our CULTURE has been corrupted.

Until at least our leaders understand, in some terms, what the real enemy is, and moves to correct the situation, we (our culture) will not progress. The imminent violent thunderstorm of monetary-financial collapse is the key factor (it's more fundamental than an "issue") around which change can and must pivot.

In short, no it hasn't passed because everything has been too turbulent in the U.S.A. Ideas don't develop -- a culture doesn't -- in such an environment. Celebrities and mobile phones do not development make, nor does "information" equal knowledge.

For one recent concrete example, investigate Tim LaHaye's writings ("Left Behind") and connections... Immense following, sales and income for totally culture-corrupting crap. LaHaye and his wife are also leading members of the Calvary Council of the Religious Roundtable, a powerful opponent of the Equal Rights Amendment.

Sorry, no short pithy answer to a good question; getting Hillary elected certainly won't hurt the cause of the ERA. And the ERA isn't going to pass in the generations-long hell on Earth that's coming if the U.S.A. doesn't get its act together in the next month or two.

Senator Hillary Rodham Clinton is a potentially pivotal historical figure beyond our ability to see at this time.

Speaking of Denver (0.00 / 0)
Can I put in a word or two for puma PAC?

They are in the last days (through Sunday) of gathering funds for their wonderful work to come in Denver. Their blog is a delight and food for the soul.

http://blog.pumapac.org/

"We are fighting for US - the seniors, the uninsured, the sick, the poor, the immigrants, the union workers, the single mothers, the isolated rural and the isolated urban families, LGBT people who always stand up for justice for others and ALWAYS find themselves alone when they try to stand up for themselves. In short, Puma PAC is fighting for the vulnerable - all of us who deserve to be represented by a political party that respects and represents us and who have been let down miserably by the Democratic Party. Not all of us are vulnerable individually. Some of us are privileged, successful, healthy, young, and even rich. It is my belief that the burden for carrying this movement falls even heavier on us.

"Today, and every day, check out Riverdaughter and Anglachel for the smart stuff. And read Alegre for the smart and JUICY stuff!"

I'd put the info re pumapac.org up on the front page, but I think the result would be laods of exploding heads over in Cheeto-land ;o)

Seriously - PUMA PAC is doing some amazing work around Denver.  And guys - if you can't make it but want to help someone else with the time, energy and drive to get there, go to PUMA PAC and donate as one of their Angels.  Every little bit helps ;o)

Alegre, how cool that your son is starting kindergarden. (0.00 / 0)
My partner's name is Rose and she is a third grade teacher and has been for 20 years.  She's getting ready for the first day of school, too.  She really misses being around her kids and her school so it will be a great day for both.

I am really sorry that you have to miss the conference on so many levels but I can guarantee your spirit will be felt.

I will be in Denver (0.00 / 0)
How does one get an invite to this thing? I would love to report on it!

I'm a Stantonian Democrat.

Here is some of the text:

Dear Friends,

We are so pleased to tell you that Sen. Clinton and Rep. Stephanie Tubbs Jones have confirmed they will be our special guests at our launch event at the Convention in Denver on Tuesday, Aug. 26th.

You were among our first and most loyal supporters, so we'd love you to forward the invitation below to friends in your networks who you think might be interested in attending our lunch.

Hope to see you in Denver on the 26th.

Warmly,

Thanks Radiowalla (0.00 / 0)
Received and RSVP'ed. Here's hoping they let me live-blog it. I'm buying my laptop for the trip TODAY! (still fund-raising for it at Peacocks and Lilies if anyone can help.)

I got an invite (0.00 / 0)
because I was an early supporter, but, unfortunately, I am not going to the convention either.  I'll probably be home, torturing myself by watching it on TV and alternating between screaming and pounding my fists.

Thank you for mentioning Stephanie Tubbs Jones.  I've already sent her a donation and may do so again.

It was mentioned upthread that WomenCount could be like a new EMILY's
List.  If so, I'd say it is going to find a warm welcome.  After the recent misfires by EMILY's List (the race in Memphis where they primaried a decent progressive male incumbent congressman in order to support a race-baiting female; or the turn-coat 2006 candidates, McCaskill and Klobuchar, who actively worked to defeat Clinton), well, I am ready to pull the plug on them for a while.

Yeah I Know What You Mean (0.00 / 0)
In all fairness to EMILY's List though, they don't have any control over what their candidates do after they get into office.  Turncoats (hopefully) won't be supported going forward.  That's about all they can do.
