The Firesign Theatre once asked "how can you be in two places at once when you're not anywhere at all?" Well that sketch suddenly popped in to my tired head tonight because I just got an invite to a reception launching this amazing new group called WomenCount.org. Hillary will be there and so will one of my new heroes - Congresswoman Stephanie Tubbs Jones. I'm eating my heart out because (appropriately enough) this event will be held with Hillary and Congresswoman Tubbs Jones in Denver, on the 88th anniversary of women's victory in the fight to win the vote.
Contrary to Cheeto rumors, I won't be in Denver for the convention or this reception. My son starts Kindergarten on the 26th so even if we could afford the trip, I'd still be right here at home to take him to the corner with his big sister, and snap a picture of him as he's climbing aboard the bus. My little guy's worked long and hard to get ready for the big day, and a lot of the programs he's gotten help through over the past 4 years were put in place or funded thanks in part to Hillary's hard work.
So I took a look at the new website for WomenCount.org and they've put together a great organization here in just a few short months. Linked at the front page is this kick-@ss trailer for a video - What's Your Point Honey...
Here's a bit about that video from their website...
Talk about a match made in heaven! The minute the filmmakers of "What's Your Point, Honey?", Susan Toeffler and Amy Sewell, read about WomenCount, and visa versa, we were on the phone and on e-mail looking for ways to collaborate! If you were to ask each of our organizations what the "end game" is, we would say roughly the same thing: It's about getting more women into the political process in a permanent and meaningful way.
We all believe that many of the critical issues so pervasive in the U.S. today are issues that women in power (read: politics) would focus on immediately and bring longer-term solutions to bear. Health care, child care, college tuition, public education, welfare reform, and equal pay - these are feminist issues.
Here's a bit of info on WomenCount.org from their About Us page...
WomenCount is a non-profit political organization that gives women of all generations and backgrounds from around the country a powerful voice in the political process. Our organization has two arms: a 527 that will conduct issue-related campaigns and a PAC that will raise and donate funds to candidates for office.
...
We are often asked whether we have made an endorsement in the presidential election. We have decided to hold off for now - not because we're avoiding it, but because we do not want that to be our focus. Instead, we want to shine the spotlight on the critical issues that emerged from the primary. Thus, our "stop the silence" campaign. Once we've achieved our goals on that issue, we'll turn to you for advice on what to tackle next.
WomenCount PAC was created in May 2008, in direct response to calls for Hillary Clinton to bow out of the presidential primary contest. Our first ad, "Not So Fast," ran in several national and local newspapers and earned enormous press attention, establishing WomenCount PAC as a major voice for women in the campaign and the political process.
In the weeks that followed, WomenCount PAC collected thousands of supporters, raised $500,000, launched three advertising campaigns, and donated to several woman candidates for Congress. We continued to receive significant press attention.
We are excited about beginning this new chapter in our story, and we encourage you to join our movement -- so that your vote will count and your voice will be heard.
One more thing about Stephanie Tubbs Jones... She's been one of Hillary's strongest supporters, so hey if you have a few bucks to spare, send the good Congresswoman some love. She's taking an awful lot of heat from the bad guys because of her support of Hillary and we need to let her know we've got her back just like we have Hillary's. DONATE HERE.
And Hillary still needs our help to retire her debt. Someone's already posted this here today but if you meant to kick in a few bucks but then got sidetracked by a phone call or whatever, please consider donating. DONATE HERE! You could win a chance to meet her in Denver during the convention!
"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. When you stumble, keep faith. When you?re knocked down, get right back up. And NEVER listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on."
