Obama Plane Can't Keep Nose Up; Running on Fumes UPDATE: PUMA PAC Fundraiser

by: campskunk

Sat Aug 16, 2008 at 12:23:47 PM EDT

That pesky mechanical problem that has plagued the Obama campaign for a while is back again, and Obama's in freefall in the Gallup tracking poll...

080815DailyGallup

And it's not that McCain is getting better... it's that Obama is getting worse. Undecideds are increasing as Democrats realize they have nobody to vote for who supports the Democratic agenda.

The Aug. 12-14 polling shows a slight dip in Obama's support, which had ranged between 46% and 48% (averaging 47%) in August. McCain has averaged 43% support among registered voters so far in August. Thus, the closer margin seen in today's results is due more to movement away from Obama than toward McCain. Twelve percent of registered voters now say they are undecided or supporting another candidate, which is on the high end of what Gallup has measured this year.

The superdelegates need to take a long hard look at this death spiral and decide whether they want to win or not.  The most recent head-to-head polling comparing Hillary to Obama vs. McCain done by Rasmussen last month showed Hillary doing five percentage points better against McCain that The Chosen One™.

If Obama gets the nomination and loses by less than five percent (like Gore and Kerry), we'll know that Howard Dean, Donna Brazile, Nancy Pelosi and the superdelegates would rather lose with an inferior candidate than win with Hillary.

Look downthread for the PUMA PAC fundraising challenge- Riverdaughter challenged us - US, I tell you - to a fundraising contest for PUMA PAC. Let's show 'em what we've got!

Dean.  Brazile.  Pelosi.

Ya know sometimes I have to wonder if they're working to LOSE this election rather than win it.  I mean when you think about it - our next Pres. is going to have a boatload of messes to clean up.

Do they have THAT little faith in our Democratic candidates that they'd throw this election to someone who clearly can't get past McCain in Nov., so they won't have to clean up Dubbya's messes?

Think about it - this way they get BHO's mailing lists and donor base (for all the good that'll do them in two years after he loses) and they leave the mess for the Repubs. to clean up.  Then Dems can come back in 2012 when things aren't so ugly in DC.

They really don't know Hillary all that well if they think she can't set things right for the millions of Americans who need help right now.

How pathetic.

i have more faith in the democratic VOTERS than i do in the leadership. (0.00 / 0)
the democratic voters out there still care about:
1) the economy
2) the war
3) universal health care
4) separation of church and state
5) protection from warrantless government snooping
6) women's access to reproductive health care

...and on and on. the leadership has already bargained all those things away, and we aren't even into the general election campaign yet. shameful.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

re: working to LOSE election (0.00 / 0)

I wonder what effect Dean's latest faux pas/Freudian slip will have.  Republicans are outraged over him calling them the White Party, but another part of Dean's remarks ("EVEN women") hasn't been given any attention, but it jumped right out for me.

Gee Howard, EVEN women count?  EVEN women can get a fair shake in the Democratic Party?

Here's the full statement from Dr. Dean:

Howard Dean:

"If you look at folks of color, even women, they're more successful in the Democratic Party than they are in the white, uh, excuse me, in the Republican Party because we just give more opportunity to folks who are hardworking people who are immigrants and come from members of minority groups,"

To me the operative word is EVEN vis avis women's success in the Democratic Party.  What a difference a little word can make.  If his comment had been "folks of color and also women", it would carry a different meaning.  Am I getting too picky? Or is there another more favorable reading of this?

he can't help (0.00 / 0)
showing his bias. Is this why his wife stays away from his public self?  The people are so far ahead of the our fear-filled leaders. They have no optimism, they are so used to doing nothing and having an excuse, they fear they'll be called on to do something, and then have no excuse.

I'm very glad there will be a real vote, so we can see how each and every super-delegates votes.  I can live with Obama as president, not Obama as losing the GE, if he gets his message straight and shows it by inviting the strongest Democrat onto his ticket and show consensus, not just say it.  Otherwise there really is no obvious point to him. IF he loses even with HIllary he'll at least have shown that he tried.

Anna, I know how you feel, but (0.00 / 0)
personally I think Obama is one of the biggest empty suits in politics.  I think he lacks principles.  I think I have a better chance of being VP than Hillary.

well, then you'd be proved right (0.00 / 0)
if he's too fearful to pick the consensus candidate, than not only are you right, it also means he wants to lose.  By the by, I think you'd make a great vice president, one of these days, or president.  You're pretty fearless, and you value competence and experts and doing a job properly.  I heart professionalism.

I heard it yesterday, but it's good that people who haven't heard it can go directly to the source.

As for Dean, he's a total jerk/ignoramus; I, too, heard "even women" and was extremely offended.  My Mom heard that, too -- she heard "White party" and "even women," both -- and thought it once again showed how lucky we were that Howard Dean shot himself in the foot with that "YEEEEEEEEEEEEAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAHHHHHHHHHHHHHHHH!!!" scream that he did in front of his supporters that was recorded for posterity (he hadn't thought anyone was taping it or videoing it or whatever, but they were and it got out, as we all know), otherwise he'd have been our President and who knows how much worse things would be right now than they are already?

I just don't get Dean.  If he is committed to the principles of Democracy, he should have taken the misogynistic media to task, he should've made sure that we had an open convention with a ballot with more than one name on it, and with those two actions we'd probably not have the Just Say No Deal coalition and several million PUMAs who won't vote for Obama under any circumstances (some won't even vote for him as Senator Clinton's VP choice, last I checked, as Senator Clinton, if elected as the Presidential nominee for the Democratic Party, would have to take him for the sake of "unity" I'm sure).

So, yes; in a nutshell, Just Say No Deal and the PUMAs are all Howard Dean's fault.  (Not to mention Donna Brazile's, but don't get me started on her.)  Nancy Pelosi was too stupid to actually help create the PUMAs like Howard Dean, but she certainly added fuel to the fire, making sure people would stay stirred up once they already were, so she, too, is a lesser contributing factor.  (Has anyone noticed besides me that Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid is taking a remarkably low profile in all this?  I would venture to guess that Reid doesn't approve of a ballot with only one name on it any more than we do, but I can't prove it.)

Superdelegates, listen up -- please!!!

Stop the drama, DUMP OBAMA!!! (as you're the only ones who can)

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

hear Dean's comment

(My computer seems to have a mind of its own.)

Dr. Dean just said why Obama is a Democrat.. (0.00 / 0)
because the Democratic Party is the one where he could get ahead. No way in hell would he have gotten the nomination as a Republican. So, he is a Democrat, and he uses Republican tactics against his fellow Democrats. And "even women" can figure that out.

They wouldn't have bothered, he's "black" (0.00 / 0)
and that alone makes it impossible for him to be a Republican nominee. Even if he were qualified, which he isn't.

Sheila Jackson Lee is a great American. (0.00 / 0)
One of our best sitting representatives, and I thought that even before I knew she was supporting Hillary Clinton (which shows her taste and good sense as well).

She knows full well that we must have someone qualified in the White House, or everything else does not signify.

Stephanie Tubbs Jones: another great American. (0.00 / 0)
The only good thing I've found out so far from this election, Alegre, is that there are many more great Americans than I knew of previously -- and I am (contrary to the rumors) not a "low-information voter" or anything of the sort.  I just lived too far from Ohio to ever have taken notice of Ms. Tubbs Jones before, but now that has been rectified.

I count just about every single last PUMA or Democrat-Against-Obama I've met as great Americans, too, btw.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

I never thought this was possible. I thought Alegre et. al were delusional. God bless our delusional friends.

I met a disabled woman in Starbucks today. She said she's a Democrat and is going to vote McCain (unless.) She thinks the Dems might overturn the nomination to Hillary. She doesn't even read blogs. This woman went to U.C. Berkeley in the 1960s.

they probably beat our $200, but here's the measure that matters, from PUMA PAC:

Well, folks - we did it yesterday. We exceeded our fundraising goal of $4,000 dollars. In one day Puma PAC raised $4,980 dollars for our Denver Headquarters and Beautiful Protest and Rise on August 25th.

Congratulations and THANK YOU to all you contributed.

and the drive goes on today, so please contribute, folks:

Today - Sunday, August 17th - is the final day of our Denver Fund Drive!
Our goal is to raise $6,000 dollars today!
