UPDATE: Kori Schake - on c-Span this morning

by: NewHampster

Sun Aug 17, 2008 at 12:01:38 PM EDT

(Promoted by me because I want this read and there be slow pickens on Olympic Sunday when all the PUMAs are watching beach volleyball. - promoted by NewHampster)

McCain Senior Foreign Policy advisor Kori Schake was on C-Span this morning taking questions and well, this Hampster is stunned.

I turned it on while channel surfing and I am stunned at how impressed I was with this woman.  Soft spoken, straight forward and incredibly knowledgeable in her subject, she totally answered every question by explaining why.

Never did she just give a party line type of answer.  This is a teacher who influences.  She's been part of Bush 1 and 2 but is open in her criticism of how policy was carried out.  Listen to the very beginning of her talk on defining global terrorism.

After her they went to Obama spokesperson, the son of Berzinski who started out by stammering "President, Senator Obama".  Yep, he said it.  Then we got the usual beat around the bush and say nothing answer.

This woman today and what I've heard from the forum yesterday are giving me the thoughts I never thought I'd have.  I can't even say it because it was so foreign to everything I've ever fought for.

Could we be having an identity crisis, Hamp? (0.00 / 0)
We've been Democrats for so long, we've been so wedded to our party and its positions, we've been so sure our leaders were superior to those we disparaged as "wingnuts" that we've refused to even condider  voices from the other side.  But now we face a party not of our making, one in which we no longer are comfortable and suddenly our eyes and ears are open to people and ideas which have never had a fair hearing before.  To be blunt, we've been slapped up side the head and it hurt. If we're not Democrats, who are we?  But maybe there's an upside here.  Maybe our future judgements will be better informed as we consider both sides.

Well said (0.00 / 0)
and I agree. As painful as the slap has been, I feel free, empowered, and dwelling in the truth. I see through the lies on both sides. I also see the truth and honor on both sides as well (what little there is).

Maybe this will be the rise of 3rd party. I've been a Democratic for 20 years, but unless Hillary is the nominee, I just don't feel I can call the Democratic Party my home anymore. The wingnuts on both sides of the aisle do not speak for me or represent my interests.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

you are free (0.00 / 0)

to voice your opinions, but they are not necessarily sick!

My impression of McCain last night was similar -- He gave much more direct answers than BO, which I didn't necessarily agree with, but it did bolster his "straight talk" thing.  Overall, McC came across much better than BO.  and I think he'll win over those independents who might have had a concern about the age thing.

McCain would be really smart to choose either Christine Todd Whitman or Kay Bailey Hutchinson for VP.

I know a better choice for McC's VP (0.00 / 0)
Hillary Rodham Clinton

Thank you for the disclaimer! (0.00 / 0)

I'd rather Hillary run as an Independent for POTUS (maybe with Bloomberg as VP) than as VP on a Republican ticket.  Hillary doesn't share Republican values and pribciples.  She's a real Democrat, but since the Dem Party isn't really Democratic anymore, I would be OK with her starting a new party or running as Independent.  And she would win!

[ Parent ]
Agree (0.00 / 0)
I agree with you here; and I always thought Obama should have run as an Independent since he's going for the Republican and Independent voters.

and Bloomberg as her VP (0.00 / 0)
would be a great choice.  He wants to bring back an FDR type New Deal to address our current problems.

No way to get on the state ballots anymore.

The Dems better nominate her then at the convention.  (I mean America's Town Hall.)

BHO, release your delegates now!

hillary's a good democrat. (0.00 / 0)
she's not going to go third party, and she's not going to accept a VP slot from the republicans. she's smarter than that. come to think of it, i doubt she'd accept a VP slot from obama. she has standards, you know ;-)

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
But could she? (0.00 / 0)
Am I right that it's too late to get on the ballots?

Thanks Stinky

it's too late to win. (0.00 / 0)
enough states' deadlines have passed so that there is no chance of actually winning.

steven colbert did the research for you.

http://colbert08.us/content/vi...

there's no chance of winning, even if the votes were there, which they aren't, because hillary would be competing with obama for the same voters, which would only benefit mccain. i still curse ralph nader's name, and for a very valid reason.

hillary won't do that to the party, no matter what the party has done to her.

I've said this before... (0.00 / 0)
I realized during the primary that the Democrats have been using issues like abortion as bait for women but they don't really care about women.

Once I realized that, I stopped having party loyalty, I left the Democratic party and started listening to the individuals running for office.

Right now.. I think I will be voting for McCain in November... unless there is a miracle in Denver.

Oh, have I mentioned I can't stand Obama?

I too was impressed. (0.00 / 0)
I watched the forum yesterday on CNN, and Obama just hemmed and hawed before all his answers.  McCain was direct and open.  Obama named two of the three wisest people he'd use to advise him as Michele and his grandmother?!  THAT gave me confidence.  NOT!

People may vote for whomever they want (0.00 / 0)
Who am I to dissuade you? After all, isn't that what this site is about: letting voices be heard?

I was tarred and feathered and run out of two other sites for my support of Sen. Clinton. I came here because Sen. Clinton is treated with the fairness and respect she deserves, and people are committed to ensuring her votes are cast in Denver.

As for my opinion?

I am a single mother raising two daughters. Personally, I am prepared to hold my nose and vote democratic in November, simply to ensure that they maintain rights over their own body.

Of course, the whole premise of this argument is that Alegre and others will be unsuccesful in Denver, and I think they need all the motivation they can get right now.

I could (0.00 / 0)
"maybe" do that if I thought Obama stood for something. I happen to think that he doesn't. I think he'll cave into the GOP constantly because he's a "pleaser" and wants to be liked by everyone. His behavior has been just as craven as Pelosi's.

hillary would have never sent an incompetent... (0.00 / 0)
...like mark brzezinski out there. obama does it all the time. can you say "jesse jackson junior"? maybe there are smart and articulate people in the obama campaign, but if there are, they're keeping them off camera.

Actually (0.00 / 0)
We were never on the bus.  His or actually Axelrove's plan was always to ignore the old Democratic base and build a youth/African American movement based on celebrity and oratory.

Those party leaders and regulars who helped him along the way are expendable, yet they'd no longer stop and become bigots like us, than they would become Republicans if Jesus was on the GOP ticket.

Besides, if we get off our ass and get to work on swinging thos delegates you'll be fighting hard for Hillary in the GE.

I say screw McCain - I'm still fighting like hell for Hillary dammit!

But also dammit (0.00 / 0)
I'm a pragmatist like my candidate.

Obama could be caught selling crack to a 12 year old girl and the supers would not change at this point.

They do not want to be called racists like us and would rather lose.

Fighting for women at Partizane

Would (0.00 / 0)
rather lose is the key phrase. I sometimes think that the party wants to lose. Or they are a bunch of stupid fools if they can't see what is coming down the pike after Labor Day.

"Racists" (0.00 / 0)
Hubby says this is the entire Obama campaign...that white guilt will propel him into the White House.

I'm still hoping that Democrats wake up in time to realize that you can be opposed to a (half)black candidate without automatically being a racist...that it's possible to have valid and strong objections to someone of color (geez, what is the currently accepted term, anyway and why do we have to keep constantly changing it?) .

If a person wasn't a racist before this campaign began it would be enough to turn her into one.

WISH (0.00 / 0)
I was over at TalkLeft when I learned about the group WISH today. This group supposedly represents getting GOP pro choice women in office. I had never heard of such a thing. I guess their voices have been drowned out by the zealots. Anyway, next payday I'm gonna sign up and see if they have any worthwhile folks to support. We desperately need more women willing to speak up for women.

I've never voted for a republican but (0.00 / 0)
this country needs to heal and come together somehow. I would like to see a Hillary/McCain ticket . They both have the centrist compatibility that appeals to me at this moment in time. This BS that Dean and the DNC is shoving down our throats is beyond acceptable to me. I won't vote for Obama under any circumstance. If I do vote for McCain it will be to help Obama lose.

I do though still believe in miracles and Hillary still may rise from the party before it goes up in smoke and only asses (ashes) are left.

Thanks, NH. (0.00 / 0)
I'm going through the same thing here.  But just when I get to the point where I think I could vote for McCain he comes up with something absolutely outrageous, like Saturday's statement that human rights begin at conception.

If you accept that premise, a woman's body passes out of her control the moment she becomes pregnant and she is, literally, a slave to the clump of cells/embryo/fetus/baby for nine months.  (Well, yes, she's going to be a slave to the kid for the next eighteen years but why rush it?)

"None of the above" is probably where I'll wind up.  At least the undervote should get their attention.

What I think on McCain is (0.00 / 0)
that much of his posturing is just fluff for the ultra-right.  He is a politician and not embarrassed to be one, so I tend to trust in the McC we've always known.  I have a feeling that Roe is safe under John McCain.

It has also always been safe under Bush because the GOP bosses can't afford to lose their rallying issue.

You're Probably Right (0.00 / 0)
If the Repubs were going to trash Roe vs Wade, they'd have done it when they owned all three branches of the government.  That they didn't speaks volumes about how much they rely on it to strong-arm the fanatical right.
