My Hunch: Obama Will Pick Hill for VP (Updates)

by: masslib

Tue Aug 19, 2008 at 19:53:26 PM EDT

I'm starting to think Obama will pick Hillary for VP.  Here's why:

1)  He's tanking in the polls, most importantly in the electoral college.  He's bleeding, and he clearly needs more strength with her voters.  Only she can give him that.

2)  Rumors Michelle is influencing his decision.  Wha?  You say.  Yeah, I know, but lots of folks don't hold a particularly high opinion of MO.  If Hillary supporters thought she were part of the decision making process it might help.

3)  He's announcing his pick in Illinois.  Why would he do that?  Makes no sense, right?  Well, it's sort of like the Unity, NH thing, they are both from Illinois, in one way or another.

4)  Rendell said he's voting for her at convention.  Uh oh.  What if Governors like Rendell, Strickland and Granholm all voted for Hillary at convention?  Obama would look pretty silly there with out any of the Democratic Governors from the three big swing states standing up for him.

5)  He's tanking in the polls.  Yeah, I know, that's 1.  But I'm thinking the Dem's gave him his shot to prove he could win without her, and he failed, so...

I am conflicted about the prospect.  On the one hand, how strange it would be for the better candidate to be on the bottom of the ticket?  On the other hand, I like voting for Hillary and would feel safer with her in the WH.

Anyway, my two cents.  At this point, Obama proves he's a narcissistic, idiot if he doesn't pick her.

Updates:  More...

6)  He's waiting so close to the convention so pundits will call it a convention bounce, not a Hillary bounce.

7)  Rumors are swirling that Hillary says she's not doing enough to help.

8)  He'll lose without her, maybe even with her, but if he loses with her, his media base will blame her, NOT him.

I'm sorry (0.00 / 0)
but if I have anything to say about it, Hillary will be VP over my dead body.

BO can sink all by himself.  Don't drag Hillary into his toxic waste.

that's what's best for hillary, but she'll do the right thing. (0.00 / 0)
she'd sacrifice her strategic long-term interests to help the party and the country.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

yes, she always does (0.00 / 0)
and she's so competent that some of it might rub off on him.

camp, It's Not the "Right Thing". (0.00 / 0)
The right thing is to allow this flash-in-the-pan to wash away at the hands of the voters..

An Obama presidency, even with Hillary as VP, is a frightening prospect.  This guy is even less accomplished than George Bush.

Democrats have GOT to learn to quit falling for good-looking, sweet-talking mediocrities like Obama and Kerry.  Want a chilling thought?  Just say Obama was elected.  What's the lesson Dems learn from this travesty?  Answer: that skill, experience, accomplishment, honesty, fairness and leadership can all take a back seat to celebrity.

You think this one's bad?  Wait till you see the next one if Barry's elected.

Great point. (0.00 / 0)
That's the strongest argument. What this will encourage in future elections.

[ Parent ]
it's the right thing for her. (0.00 / 0)
you and i got here too late to change her value system, and the standards she holds herself to.

those roots go down to bedrock. that's who she is.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

[ Parent ]
It May Be the Right Thing For Her (0.00 / 0)
but it's sure the wrong thing for the country.  Anything that puts Barack Obama in the White House is the wrong thing for the country.

Sorry for being so argumentative.  I'm just baffled by people, even Hillary, who think a "D" after someone's name makes them automatically the right choice.  I can go with "my country, right or wrong" but I draw the line at "my party, right or wrong".

But then, my party isn't my party any longer.  My new voter registration card arrived today from Charlie, our County Auditor, with a spiffy "NP" in the space for party affiliation.  I thought I'd be sad when I got it.  I wasn't...just relieved to not have to make excuses any longer for the disaster the Democratic Party has become.

[ Parent ]
Me too but if he has to withdraw before November (0.00 / 0)
and she is the veep then .... well I'm thinking it through ....

Like I said, I'm conflicted. (0.00 / 0)

Well, I said I'm conflicted. But the writing is on the wall. (0.00 / 0)
I don't know what to do.  Hopefully, my decision will be made for me and he'll prove to be a narcissistic idiot.

One tough debate and now he has the sniffles (0.00 / 0)
How will he hold up on the job:
On Tuesday he looked worse. When a reporter asked if he was feeling better before a string of satellite interviews, Obama replied, "Not really."

[ Parent ]
awwwww - poor bay-bee. (0.00 / 0)
He sooooooo fragile.

[ Parent ]
The job is getting closer - how will he get out of this? (0.00 / 0)
Every job he's had he's moved on from before he had to do actual work.

I'm convinced he doesn't want the actual job. He just wants people to know he could have the job if he wanted it.

[ Parent ]
you may be right (0.00 / 0)
it's like going to medical school but not wanting to be a doctor, only this hasn't anything to do with preparation, that he didn't do, but with getting hired, oops, I'm getting confused here but, I agree.

[ Parent ]
It Was the Same With Bush (0.00 / 0)
He didn't really want to do the work of the president.  He just wanted to be president.  He's so lazy he wouldn't have been half the disaster he is, if 9/11 had never occurred.  He'd have coasted through four years of vacations and then been thrown out of office in 2004.

And now Dems are thinking of nominating another lazy egotist.  Are they trying to prove to the world that they can be worse than Republicans?

[ Parent ]
Perhaps he should go to Hawaii (0.00 / 0)
for another rest period.  Obviously the stress of running for POTUS is getting to him.  And perhaps his kids shouldn't come near him since they gave this to him in the first place.

Always blame someone, whoever is available.  Grandma, kids, Pumas, etc. etc.

Sorry, but not much sympathy coming from me here.  I saw Hillary working her heart out, regardless of how she felt.  She's 60 years old, and out-ran him in the Primaries 2 to 1 as far as scheduled events went.  She went on when she lost her voice, etc.  Poor Obama.  Why is it I just cannot feel sorry for him at this point?  Well, that would take a whole long diary to explain.

[ Parent ]
It's the only way (0.00 / 0)
he gets my vote.  That's my story, and I'm sticking to it.

Yeah but, it's that damn pride thingy. It'll never let him do it. (0.00 / 0)
Isn't Pride a cardinal sin, one of the seven deadly sins? How appropriate for his campaign.

if he's too proud to win (0.00 / 0)
he's too stupid to be president.

I think he'll set the WH up for (0.00 / 0)
another male. If he gets in, I doubt he would let Hillary be next in line. He's not change, he's the good ol' boys network kinda guy. It blazes from him like a freakin' billboard. Look at the women around him. Passive. Safe. Unchallenging.

I told you a couple of weeks back - The Bots are the VP (0.00 / 0)

We are invisible and don't show up in the mirror.

[ Parent ]
Please, not Hillary (0.00 / 0)

I love Hillary but don't want her to be the VP pick and I doubt she would be. She's still holding events to help pay down her debt. If she were the VP choice, Obama would take care of it.

Obama is holding a big VP rollout event in Illinois this week. Saturday?

Country before party.

Maybe he'll have to step down before November (0.00 / 0)
Her as veep will not do much as it's clear he's incapable of listening.

But Illinois is his home and where she grew up.  She's been a nomad since she hooked up with Bill.

Hillary Clinton, Barack Obama will not get my vote.

scratching head (0.00 / 0)
Don't know what to think of this, I'd written off the possibility. My gut reaction is, it will bother me for two reasons.

1. The person who should be next POTUS (in light of recent events, more needed than ever) not only won't be, she'll have to take marching orders from someone else. I'd rather she carve out her own role. The way things are going, we're going to need a strong Democratic voice in Congress to stand up to this guy when he wants to cave on a given issue, and she's the only one with the clout to do it. Putting her in that slot, neuters the only independent voice of significance left in the Democratic Party. After her, it's a bunch of mavericks with no power at all, like Feingold and Kucinich.

2. She'll just get more hate from the other side (and plenty from within the Dem Party), and it will be even uglier than before. It's one thing if she's going for the big prize. But it won't be pleasant watching her take those hits to put that guy into office, even as that guy's own guys are carving her up at the same time. (Can you imagine the Kos diaries everytime Obama drops 1 pt in polling with HRC as vp?) Especially when, if things go wrong, she gets all the blame.

This plays to negative gender stereotyping in a big way. (0.00 / 0)
My vote is NO.  If not HELL, NO.

Hillary Clinton is by far better qualified than Obama any day -- on her worst day, and his best, she's still far better than he is and knows far more.  I'd rather take ten gaffes from her than ten scintillating statements from him -- because I know she can make the gaffes right, while all he has are those scintillating statements (on his best day) with nothing to back 'em up.

I will not reward the DNC's bad behavior and their extremely poor choice of candidates with my vote -- Obama and the DNC have lost my vote forever, unless he's VP.  I will gladly vote for him there.

As for Senator Clinton, if she's on the ballot as VP, I will vote for her, never him -- and that's all I'm willing to do.  (I believe WI lets me split the vote.  Guess what I'm going to do, then?)

And for whatever it's worth, my money remains on Kathleen Sebelius.  I think Obama wants to stick it to all of us, and he believes that Kansas' couple-three electoral votes are winnable with Sebelius on the ticket.  (Yeah, right.)

Note to superdelegates:  Only you can stop this drama.  So, stop the drama, DUMP OBAMA!!!

We really need Hillary Clinton.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

[ Parent ]
Btw, just in case there's any doubt -- Hillary Clinton for President. (0.00 / 0)
Obama's fine as VP.  He might learn something there.  And that'll placate his voters and the party elites somewhat.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

You know, I wish people would understand (0.00 / 0)
when I predict what I think is going to happen, it isn't like I'm giving it my stamp of approval or anything.  I am merely looking at several factors and deducing the most likely outcome.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

[ Parent ]
I do understand that, Masslib. (0.00 / 0)
Your diary is excellently phrased.  I appreciate the thought behind it.  And it would show some common sense if Obama actually did it, which would be one argument (the first one I've found) to vote on his behalf -- that he'll do what's right on occasion, even if he obviously dislikes it.  (Reagan picked G. H. W. Bush, for example, and Reagan really disliked Bush 41.  Reagan did it for the good of the Republican Party, IIRC.  I hate to draw that parallel, but in the past fifty years, that's the best one that fits.)

I just find the idea absolutely repugnant, even though in some ways it would be a lot better than nothing.  But the thought of Senator Clinton standing behind Obama, in the way Cheney always has behind Bush, just makes me want to throw up.

I know it's not what you want, either, Masslib.  Of course I know that.

I also hope dissenting views are still welcomed here.

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

[ Parent ]
When have I not allowed dissenting to views? (0.00 / 0)
But anytime I suspect this and write it, people get extremely upset, and I just want it known this isn't me advocating or not, just speculating.
