PUMA 1, Possum 0: Obama Campaign Retires Presumptuous Presidential Seal

by: campskunk

Mon Jun 23, 2008 at 19:03:18 PM EDT

Well, it had to happen; the possum met the puma, and things didn't go well... for the possum.  Intrepid Alegre's Corner reporters captured these actual photographs of the encounter...

The word out this afternoon is that the hilarious faux presidential seal unveiled by the Obama campaign is being sent back to the minors. Ken Wheaton at Advertising Age has the gory details:

                             The Possum Sleeps Tonight

Last week, Barack Obama unveiled a new campaign seal -- and not the kind that swims, barks and balances balls on the end of its nose. Rather, it was the kind that has a big old eagle on it and some Latin (Vero possumus, which translates very loosely to "Yes we can"). It's also a seal that combined elements of Richard Nixon's White House police uniforms and George W. Bush's "Mission Accomplished." And it went over about as well. Andrew Malcolm at the L.A. Times had some fun with it. And Mickey Kaus predicted it would be disappeared over the weekend. His exact words were: "But unless David Axelrod is insane, the thing will never be seen again."

Kaus was right. While we don't have full details, someone at Obama's press center, when asked if the seal would be used going forward said simply, "No."

Marc Ambinder has an interesting insight into the type of thinking that led to this hilarious episode:

Some Obama aides are enraptured by the idea of an Obama brand that transcends politics; others, including most of those who are actually close to the candidate, are much, much more concerned with the type of hubris that all the talk of an Obama brand actually encourages.

Frankly, that kind of thinking scares me. I too thought of Nixon's presidential palace uniforms when I saw this last week. And we know Nixon's views on presidential powers.

So look at it one last time, folks. It's not even a week old, and has already been relegated to the dustbin of political memorabilia.

Meanwhile the puma is doing fine... did you notice the seal on Hillary's podium yesterday at the high school graduation? Fuzzy screencap off the video, but you get the idea.

I read that in the news, (4.00 / 8)
and was amused at the rapid backpedaling. I wonder if Obama will back pedal himself right back to Illinois? We can only hope. Heh. And the pics of the puma eating the possum are great. I prefer to think of possum as road-kill myself. Perhaps Possumus will be run over by the ground-swell of support for Hillary. I think that is going to be my new nickname for Obama..Possumus. When things get tough, he plays dead. Hehehe.

Live your life in such a way that when your feet
hit the floor in the morning, Satan shudders & says
'Oh $#!%'...she's awake!!

So the (4.00 / 8)
eagle with the Obama diaper has been retired? Whew, he did a 180 on that one faster than telecom immunity.

I kinda hate that it's retired though. It's good for a belly laugh!

Great post, Camp! (4.00 / 4)
Too funny.

Medicare for All is Civil Rights

Britches got too big (4.00 / 5)
that even the Obamedia bitches smacked back. That seal was ridiculous and he deserves the chiding he is getting for it. PUMAs eat possums. Obama does play dead when threatened. I love the puma on Hillary's podium. Holy Gotham, is she sending out the PUMA signal?

Alice left me in Wonderland.

hey, PUMA is getting more press! (4.00 / 3)
here is a news story on Darragh Murphy, who started PUMA PAC.  video, too.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

Well, the Seal Didn't Work (4.00 / 3)
Perhaps a ride in a tank would.

LMAO (4.00 / 3)
No, he is too smart for that. He'll give a speech on an aircraft carrier with Mission Accomplished in the background.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

YES! What a jerk this guy is! (4.00 / 4)
I mean, if you were presented with this thing to use in YOUR POTUS campaign, would you have said "yes"?

NOpe!

Gosh (4.00 / 6)
the lengths you'll go to illustrate your diaries.  Night filming can be an ordeal in itself, but managing to cinematically capture a Puma hunting a possum is downright dangerous.  You amaze me with your creative dedication.

Oh..You'll see it again.. (4.00 / 6)
It'll be featured in campaign ads in the Fall..
Its the Obamessiahs "Mission Accomplished" moment..
Right up there with Dukasis in the tank and Kerry in that ridiculous NASA suit..
What a tool Obama is...
a bit too cocky.

The Eagle Must've laid that "O" (4.00 / 2)
in the middle of its belly.

Possums (4.00 / 1)
are vile creatures. We horse owners HATE HATE HATE them. They carry a disease that is absolutely horrible to horses. Nasty, nasty critters! Wanton destruction of gardens, hen houses, flower beds. Ugly too!
Our dog has killed two already this year- yay!
AND stupid! There's a reason you see so many dead on the road- not the brightest animals in the kingdom.

donna brazille (0.00 / 0)
was gushing over it's presidential spirit, but everyone else thought it made him look like a joke. Maybe it was her idea?  He really doesn't get it.
