ACTION: I Own My Vote - Sign the Pledge

by: Alegre

Tue Jun 24, 2008 at 22:57:14 PM EDT

There are a lot of petitions / pledge's out there but I think we can all agree that there are a few things that need to happen before we get on that unity pony.  I want you to read this and then go to IOwnMyVote.com and sign this pledge.  Read on...

On Saturday, June 7, 2008, Hillary Clinton suspended her historic campaign for President. To her 18 million voters, it may have seemed like an end, but I pledge to make it a beginning a beginning of a movement to achieve the democratic and just country that Hillary has envisioned for America.

I stand together with Hillary Clintons 18 million voters to demand that Senator Obama and the Democratic Party:

Bring us together by seating 100% of the Florida and Michigan delegations in Denver with 100% of their votes, allocated in accordance with the popular vote of each state.

Bring us together by adopting policies on the Platform Committee that Hillary Clinton has championed.

Bring us together through reform of the primary and caucus system to reflect the basic principle of one person/one vote.

Bring us together through outspoken denunciation of all gender bias, racism and other forms of discrimination.

Bring us together by fairly and respectfully including Hillary and her supporters at the Democratic National Convention in Denver by, among other things, placing her name in nomination for President, conducting a roll call vote, and providing her a prominent speaking role during prime time on August 26th, the 88th anniversary of womens suffrage.

I own my vote. It does not belong to any party. It does not belong to any candidate. It does not belong to any mob that would impose its will on me. Only I can decide how to use my vote, and I can decide based on any criteria I choose. Therefore I pledge not to give my vote to anyone who does not earn it.

Now Im guessing a lot of folks have been going on the assumption that well just line up behind Obama because Hillarys asked us to, and because many of us are life-long Democrats.  As many of you might have noticed, this has been an ugly campaign so far, and as far as Im concerned Obama and the DNC need to reach out to us and heal the divisions theyve worked night and day to create in our party.

So far, Im not seeing it.  Rather Ive seen them insult us and Hillary over and over again, from that disastrous decision by the RBC re FL & MI, to Obamas appointment of Solis-Doyle, to appeals for funding for the DCCC and the DSCC  all the while remaining silent in appealing to Democrats for help in retiring Hillarys campaign debt.  Each of those funding appeals on behalf of congressional candidates while ignoring his promise to help Hillary is a slap in the face to Hillary, and to her 18 million supporters.  He expects us to get over it while his friends go around saying were bitter and are far too busy with our knitting to understand whats at stake this year.

We understand full well whats at stake.  Thats why weve been working tirelessly on behalf of the one candidate we know will have what it takes to take over next January.

Look if they want party unity then theyd better start ACTING like they want unity.  After the hate and bile  after the way the DNC sat silently by while Hillary took a relentless barrage of misogynistic attacks, been called a racist at every turn, watched as they vilified her beloved husband as a racist and a buffoon.

Whats the old saying  you break it you own it?  Well Obama and the DNC have worked for months at shattering our partys unity and its high time they started to put the pieces back together.

This pledge is from a new coalition of Hillarys supporters  Together 4 Us  heres their mission statement

One year ago, the Democrats predicted a joyful march toward victory in November. For various reasons, and to different degrees, Democrats are not all in the same frame of mind today. Our changed outlook about this election is not thanks to sour grapes or hurt feelings. Its about genuine concern for the party and its future. Its about the attitudes and values of the partys leaders and leadership. Its about whether those leaders  including Barack Obama  will take seriously the 18 million voters who supported his opponent, and whether he and the party will demonstrate sincere, lasting commitment to real party unity  not just unity built on political convenience.

Much has been asked of Hillary Clinton since she suspended her campaign. Already she has forcefully pledged to work for Obama and the party and, based on her extraordinary track record of supporting democratic candidates over the past 15 years, no one can doubt her commitment to the partys nominee or the partys goals.

However, we also believe that this process must be a two-way street. Obama is now in charge. He has pledged to unite the party and America. It is up to him to show that he is serious about that promise and is capable of delivering on it. He must show us now that his commitment is about more than just words.

So far, Senator Obama and the party leadership only appear willing to pay lip service to Hillarys supporters, the issues she championed, or her place in the party leadership. All we have heard is that we better fall in line fast, and with no questions asked.

But we are not willing to fall into line without first getting some answers.

CLICK HERE to sign the pledge.  Its quick  its easy  and it sends a message to Howard Dean, Barack Obama, David AxelRove and anyone else who just assumes were going to fall in line behind someone whos lied about our candidate, attacked her mercilessly while claiming to be the candidate of change without a peep from the DNC, the press or the media  and whos followers have been relentless in hounding, stalking and abusing anyone who doesnt fall in line behind their guy.

As youve probably noticed, Obamas got a lot of work to do if he wants to heal the divisions hes played a large role in creating in our party.

My advice for our presumptuous nominee?

Get to work Barack and do it now!

obama hasn't lifted a finger to unify the party... (0.00 / 0)
...well, maybe ONE finger, but it was the wrong one ;-)

that DSCC email was another slap in the face today. they're coming right on schedule - two or three times a week, obama makes sure everybody knows he REALLY, REALLY doesn't like hillary.

hey, obama, we get the message.

Barack Obama's election proves that any male can grow up to be president, provided he's willing to use misogyny as a campaign strategy.

He's Sending the Same Message to Us (0.00 / 0)
All 18 million of us.

You disrespect Hillary, you disrespect us too and that is NOT how you go about unifying a broken community / party.

It's as if he's doing all he can to make sure he loses in November.  How anyone could declare victory and then turn around and further alienate over 18 million Democrats is beyond me.

has been taken hostage by the DNC.  But we remain free and able to still fight for her policies.  Our voices must be heard now and in Denver---If not now, when?  If not us, then who?

oh, and sending in money helps. (0.00 / 0)
there's nothing like financial independence to give hillary the freedom she needs.

Help Hillary Declare Her Independence (0.00 / 0)
I just updated my diary with the following public service announcement:

Just Say No Deal has launched a new fund raising effort for Hillary's supporters to donate $20.08 on July 4th to help Hillary declare her independence. Get the word out.

BTW, I signed the petition.

Alice left me in Wonderland.

Pledge (0.00 / 0)
is signed. Thanks for posting the info!

Done. (0.00 / 0)
Thanks for calling this to our attention, alegre.

Also, apropos of nothing, I loved the way you phrased your request: "I want you to read this and then go to IOwnMyVote.com and sign this pledge."  Straightforward and personal, with no wiggle room.

Yours is a powerful voice.

We DO own our vote (0.00 / 0)
And frankly it's about time many of us realized that. I speak as a fool that has been a straightforward, straight-ticket voting Democrat for 40+ years.

I'm through holding my damn nose unless it's for a "protest vote". I will no longer hold my nose and vote for DINOs or Blue Dog Democrats who are nothing but DINOs.

The whole idea that any corrupt, pathetic Dem is better than any corrupt Republican no longer works with me.

And trying to scare me about McCain doesn't work either. The corruption and hostile takeover of the Democratic Party scares me a lot more.

PUMA!

Right On! (0.00 / 0)
No longer will I vote for a Democrat out of loyalty.  The DNC and Obama shattered my faith and my loyalty - potentially forever.  I Own My Vote!  Falling in line simply because I am a Democrat is no longer an option the Party can count on - at least from this live-long Democrat!

Excellent (0.00 / 0)
Own? Never!  But the rental rates are surprisingly affordable.  ;-)

More seriously.  This is exactly the point.  The Democratic Party needs some actual Democratic reform.  It also needs to be grounded in its traditions and traditional base - not just election year lip service to the poor, unions, environment, working people, women and minorities.

It seems to be disturbingly morphing into a bizarre mirror of the Republicans.  Where both cater to business and money interests and separate in that the Republican form coalition with the Religious Right and the Democrats with the "Creative Class."  But as a whole the Democrats are now starting to write off many of the same groups the Republicans used to.

Then as an election year "tradition" they offer some special catering to other groups as needed to get elected in their sibling feud with each other - only to shove them off to the deep freeze until the next election cycle.

We're told not to throw our support third party because we "waste" our vote and/or "it's a vote for the Republicans".  When asked what the alternative is if the Party isn't representing my values in actual deeds - I hear mumbling that people should run within the party, but I'm failing to see where anyone who does actually stands a chance or is able to exert any real influence for change.

So what do I have to bargain with?  My vote.  The day I give my vote away to blind support of anyone because of their party affiliation is to strip away actual Democracy from Democratic leaving us just with "ic."  Which is how I'm left feeling nowadays - "ick!"

But I babble...

"Always aim high, work hard, and care deeply about what you believe in. When you stumble, keep faith. When you?re knocked down, get right back up. And NEVER listen to anyone who says you can't or shouldn't go on."
