"Hillary invades Obama's convention"?

by: Alegre

Tue Aug 26, 2008 at 17:27:12 PM EDT

I love it when people take on the hacks in the press and the media, and Eric Boehlert does it in fine fashion with his latest Media Matters column.  Here he takes on the claims that Hillary has no right to be at our party's convention and is more or less invading Obama's coronation, by pointing out a few historical facts.  People seem to forget that our own dear Chairman (Howard Dean) ran, lost, got to speak and have his name put into nomination last time out.  Well dear Eric points out what others choose to ignore - history.

Sigh... how quickly they forget.  I guess this is what the press and MSM are left to when they have nothing to talk about re our presumptuous nominee's accomplishments or plans.  Check it out...

Hillary Clinton speaks at convention. The press concocts a story

At the Democratic National Convention in 1992, Jerry Brown, who finished a very distant second to the party's nominee, had his name placed into nomination and addressed the assembled convention. ...  Brown "did not specifically endorse presidential nominee Bill Clinton."

Boehlert goes on to remind us that Jesse Jackson was passed over as Dukakis' vice presidential nominee and threatened to withhold his delegates.  In his keynote speech that year, he spoke for nearly an hour and didn't bother to endorse the guy who beat him.

Hillary on the other hand not only endorsed when she suspended, but she's been out on the stump for BHO ever since and has worked her heart out to win us over and raise money for the guy.  And yet she's still treated like an outsider - an intruder at our own party's nominating convention.

Make the jump, there's a lot more...

Alegre :: "Hillary invades Obama's convention"?
Now, take those historical nuggets from 1992 and 1988 and transport them to Denver this week, and try to imagine what the press reaction would be (not the political reaction, but the press reaction) if Hillary Clinton delivered her address Tuesday night and did not endorse the Democratic Party's nominee.

Fact: Many in the press have portrayed Clinton's planned convention address, as well as the fact that her name is being placed into nomination, as an unprecedented, heavy-handed power grab.

Fact: It's not. In years past, Democratic candidates who won lots of primaries and accumulated hundreds of delegates (sorry, Howard Dean and Bill Bradley) have always been allowed to address the convention and very often place their name into nomination. It's the norm. It's expected. It's a formality.

Boehlert goes on to note that few if any news outlets bothered to put this year's campaign in to any historical context.  Papers we've come to rely on for accurate and fair reporting have completely failed us in this regard - the New York Times, The Boston Globe, the Wall Street Journal and the Washington Post - nothing.  And cable...?  Fuggedaboudit!  None of them mentioned Brown, Jackson or even Gary Hart.  They're sure as hell not going to mention that Dean had his name on the ballot.

Worse than not putting things in to historical context - the New York Times took it a step further by saying Hillary's supporters are still furious that she isn't the nominee. Well I've got news for the Times... that's not why we're still furious.  If BHO had won fair and square we would not be furious.   This is not about winning.  It's about how the DNC sat back and watched while her opponents, the MSM and the press dragged Hillary through the mud.  Our own party leaders remained silent while a good and decent Democrat was being smeared and we won't ever forget - or forgive that.

I found this next bit from ABC's The Note to be especially worthy of scorn...

Maybe it was better for the Obama campaign to invite you inside, since you would have made an ugly scene outside. Surely Sen. Barack Obama can afford to be gracious, even to you, since he'll leave Denver with the only prize that counts.

"Even to you." That's a nice touch, coming from the same press corps that erupts with indignation whenever somebody suggests Clinton might have been tarred with sexist campaign coverage. (Y'think? National Review Online, August 15: "Sure, Hillary's fat and waddly and screechy and gives pantsuits a bad name.")

... And that's what's been so amazing about watching the brazen, Clinton's-trying- to-steal- the-convention- with-a-speech coverage: The narrative is built on a swamp. The press has provided virtually no facts, not even anonymous quotes, to support its beloved narrative that Hillary Clinton's planned speech ignited some kind of civil war inside the Democratic Party.

Boehlert closes by noting a few examples of so-called journalism that not only attacks Hillary, but also goes after BHO as someone who's getting pushed around by this power-hungry girl.  I love his last point...

Why were critics able to get off those cheap shots? Because the press, strenuously ignoring facts and recent history, was determined to paint Clinton as the ultimate party crasher.

No one holds the press and the media accountable any more.  Maybe that's why they get away with framing the narrative and creating the story rather than reporting it.

Thank god(dess) for folks like Boehlert.  And least he's trying to point out the obvious bias and BS in this election season.  Too bad he's a lone voice of reason in the wilderness.

It's a great read - go read his whole article you guys.

it betrays their fascination (0.00 / 0)
with her, they have to make up stuff to keep talking about her.  Except for the distinct possibility that quite a few long-hours talking heads, like the British CNN guy who got caught scoring, are on methamphetamine, and so they can't reprogram their brains to accept the end of the primary, it shows that she's simply fascinating to them.  As usual as with the racism crap the people see through it.  And I think the pollseters will keep polling her too, it's the news people want to know about.  What do people think of HIllary will stay on their brains.

This is why she could have dragged him across the finish line were she the VP nom, there is no way anyone would be talking about John McCain if Hillary were one of the candidates. It's stupid to lose because you don't want to be upstaged.

Hillary - alternative energy

The same press who wants so bad for Obama to win (0.00 / 0)
that their legs tingle, are ignoring one of the reasons why some Clinton supporters won't vote for him, and that is THE sexism shown by the PRESS all through this.  One thing that makes us hate Obama is the way the press treated her.  But they still go on and on with the same garbage.  WTF did she ever do to them, and to someone like Cafferty, and these other loser haters other than challenge their priviledged existence based on their maleness? The more they keep on the more determined I am to not vote at all this year.  Wasn't it in the tribute to Kennedy last night that they showed Kennedy actually addressing the convention when he ran against Carter?  Sick or not sick, he continues to be a hypocritical blowhard, one of the good old boys who never gets questioned, but who expects a woman to beg for the same privileges he seems to believe he was born with.  The Democratic party, the media, and every other institution in this country is full of the same kind of priviledged male jackasses and their women servants like the missouri helper who seems pretty needy for their attention no matter how she has to gravel for it. Any they can spare at all.  One thing Hillary has gone and done this time, is she has done away with women being compliant in accepting black suits and white shirts as the only picks available for president. What a can of worms she has opened and the talking headed jackasses in the media know it.

I have to take a breath..........I'm so pissed..

It IS Fascination (0.00 / 0)
Anna Shane you are so correct Hillary is the excitement - the fascination is all with her and the BObots know it.  This is why he would have won with her as VP. I said on Democrat in Exile:

It is something of a sick joke that everyone expects Hillary to save BO now, not for BO to win their votes. He rejected her as VP which would have saved him, made the wrong decision as usual, and now BO and the media expects Hillary to fix BO's mess. She is a fine leader but not God. She will not be able to save BO or the Democrat Party from her constricted position. They made their own failure from greed and it is so obvious they will be blamed, not Hillary.

Now think.  If Hill had won, would the media expect BO to work this hard for HER?  What would the media expect from Michelle BO as compared to what they expect from Bill Clinton?

There is an article by Susan Faludi in the New York Times today on women's suffrage and Hillary; August 26, 2008, Op-Ed ,Contributor'Second-Place Citizens and a beautiful Hillary video over at Clintonista titled "The Call"

Was there any coverage of the candle Rise ceremony in the park?

There's no way in hell they'd be after BHO to save the day for Hillary if she'd won.  No way.

Thanks for the links.

As for the Candlerise event - none that I know of.

Making lots of new friends.  My son isn't saying much - he's not used to such a long day and is pretty tired.  Made it onto the right bus to the after school program - hubby went to pick them up and they didn't want to go home.

TV coverage (0.00 / 0)
FOX has had positive coverage of Hillary today, stressing that it's Obama's job to unify the party. They are covering the mess with the roll call, protests, and had good interviews with Will and Harriet. Cavuto was an ass to a Hillary delegate, but other than that it's been great coverage.

Good review by Boehlert (0.00 / 0)
a number of undercurrents explain the bizarre press coverage this political season.

1. Reporters are no longer content to report, but are under pressure to place news in context, give background and offer concommittant anlytical nuance, a tall order under best of conditions, yields mongrel results in todays fast news cycle climate.

2. All media outlets are undergoing hybridization due to and involving the internet. TV/Radio/Print media are getting online, the lines are blurred, and instant spread of word is making news not news, only anlysis matters. It's almost as if, from the outset, a news item is also a critical piece itself.

3. Unlike 'olden' days, little time exists to reflect, research, correlate current situation with past similar events. Ironing since, the same tool makes both communication and research instantaneously available - computer/google. But, it's the human interface that's the critical element missing.

4. Huge increase in citizen journalism means experiences generate quickly, but are slow to be gather together, congeal and form a coherent impression, before more is added. It's like, we are always in a receiving mode, rarely in absorbing it or integrating it.

5. Nowadays, everybody is a player. With blogs all around, there is true universal empowerment, with audio and video to boot!

This last makes it imperative to master tools of communication, control, imaging and opinion coalescing. Obama seems to have done this last bit well, with a little bit of help from his friends, at least in the short run.

What's to come in the months? More of the same I guess.  Over the last six months I have come across thousands of voices that said this is the first year they got involved this much in politics (all older people, not first time voters). This makes me think Obama has a very tough time ahead, he is dealing with a very unknown face of electorate, even if he is clever!
Thanks for letting me ramble.

Still Hearting Hillary, In Slo-Mo toward McCain

Good points - older people involved in this election? (0.00 / 0)
This one surprises me:
Over the last six months I have come across thousands of voices that said this is the first year they got involved this much in politics (all older people, not first time voters). Are you referring to older Hillary supporters? Nobama people? Very surprising.

In similar anecdotal vein, I know a lot of long-time activists, people who are politically involved and have been for years, who are so totally turned off by the choices in this presidential election. Even if they hold their nose and vote for Obama, the lack of enthusiasm will translate to a loss of money, volunteers and votes.

Love the piece by Boehlert. Thanks for posting!

I've Been a Dem for 35 Years (0.00 / 0)
Voted in every election since I turned 18 in 1980, phone-banked, stuffed envelopes, walked precincts... I have NEVER gone all out for a candidate like I have for Hillary this year.  No candidate have inspired and energized me the way Hillary has.  Not even Bill (sorry Big Dawg!).

I'm not "old" but I'm certainly not a kid any more.  I've earned my stripes as a Democratic Party animal and this Democrat backs Hillary 1000%.

And I'll be fighting stronger AND SMARTER when she runs again in 2012 if we can't make it happen this time around!

every media outlet (0.00 / 0)
Sharmajee,

you couldn't be more right about this.  What I have been seeing is players on the local level, you know the news that most people just watch to see the weather and local sports highlights, has been increasingly involved with reporting and interpreting national news.

We actually have local news pundits who comment on national politics and world affairs (i.e., foreign policy), who are not experts in either.  They occassionally will interview some of our universities' professors on such issues. And of course, they have all come to the conclusion that Obama is God and Hillary has invaded the Convention.

I never thought I'd say that I long for the news stories on the illness of the day and latest menace to consumers.
