MSNBC Boots Both Olbermann and Matthews from Anchor Chair

by: grlpatriot

Mon Sep 08, 2008 at 09:45:32 AM EDT

Looks like NBC had to step in to manhandle the two sexist, Clinton-haters with the biggest man crushes on Obama.

MSNBC is removing Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews as the anchors of live political events, bowing to growing criticism that they are too opinionated to be seen as neutral in the heat of the presidential campaign.

"Opinionated" -- I think WaPo is being kind. David Gregory will be assuming the anchor chair until the election. You'll have to tell me how he fairs because I'm still boycotting MSNBC.

More over the flip...

grlpatriot :: MSNBC Boots Both Olbermann and Matthews from Anchor Chair
Here is the rest of the WaPo article:

The move, confirmed by spokesmen for both networks, follows increasingly loud complaints about Olbermann's anchor role at the Democratic and Republican conventions. Olbermann, who regularly assails President Bush and GOP nominee John McCain on his "Countdown" program, was effusive in praising the acceptance speech of Democratic nominee Barack Obama. He drew flak Thursday when the Republicans played a video that included a tribute to the victims of the Sept. 11 attacks, saying that if the networks had done that, "we would be rightly eviscerated at all quarters, perhaps by the Republican Party itself, for exploiting the memories of the dead, and perhaps even for trying to evoke that pain again. If you reacted to that videotape the way I did, I apologize."

Matthews, who has criticized politicians in both parties, drew less criticism for his convention role but became a divisive figure during the primaries when he described how he was inspired by Obama's speeches and made disparaging remarks about Hillary Clinton, for which he later apologized.

I recall Olberman's rants about Hillary and wanting to take her behind a shed. Remember his blog posts on the Daily Kos. The man is insane and needs to be fired.

In May, MSNBC President Phil Griffin said in an interview that during live events Olbermann and Matthews "put on different hats. I think the audience gets it. . . . I see zero problem."

But NBC News journalists, who often appear on the cable channel, did see a problem, arguing behind the scenes that MSNBC's move to the left -- which includes a new show, debuting tonight, for Air America radio host Rachel Maddow -- was tarnishing their reputation for fairness. Tom Brokaw, the interim host of "Meet the Press," said that at times Olbermann and Matthews went too far.

"At times" they went too far, really Tom, how about daily!

Olbermann and Matthews will remain as analysts during major political events, and officials at both networks, who declined to be identified discussing personnel moves, said Olbermann had initiated the discussions to clarify his role. They said Olbermann's influence at MSNBC would in no way be diminished and that the shift would enable him and Matthews to offer more candid analysis during live coverage. Olbermann confirmed yesterday he had initiated the discussions.

"Phil and I have debated this set-up since late winter/early spring (with me saying, 'Are you sure this flies?' and him saying, 'Yes, but let's judge it event by event') and I think we both reached the same point during the RNC," Olbermann said by e-mail.

Olbermann was involved in several on-air incidents during the conventions that drew unwanted attention. He told morning host Joe Scarborough, a former Republican congressman, to "get a shovel" as Scarborough was defending the McCain campaign. And when GOP strategist Mike Murphy was debating Matthews, Olbermann could be heard saying, "Let's wrap him up."

Read the rest. It appears that Olbermann is calling the shots and silencing dissenting opinion and cementing MSNBC into a propaganda outlet.

These and other clashes fueled a sense that conservative voices are less than welcome at MSNBC as it has tried to position itself as a left-wing alternative to Fox News Channel. Olbermann disputes this view, calling the incidents "overblown." Still, the network canceled Tucker Carlson's show in March and has diminished his role. And Dan Abrams, the veteran NBC legal analyst and former MSNBC general manager, had his program dropped last month to make room for Maddow, an Olbermann protege.

MSNBC's more liberal outlook has boosted its ratings, though it remains the third-place cable news channel. But both parties began castigating its coverage last spring. Steve Schmidt, McCain's top strategist, called the network "an organ of the Democratic National Committee," and Clinton campaign chairman Terry McAuliffe said Matthews was "in the tank" for Obama.

I will continue to boycott MSNBC. I believe we need to continue to put pressure on parent company, NBC, to clean up the place and relegate Olbermann to the waste basket where he belongs.

Good for MSNBC for finally doing something right.

As for KO -- I used to enjoy him even though I knew he was sexist.  But I certainly don't now -- he's not even an honest sexist, and I despise hypocrisy worse than any other sin.

Rant ahead:

I also am going to make a personal judgment, as KO has made so many -- KO, it's really time you started dating intelligent women.  Stop dating porn stars already; they're not doing anything for you.

And really, you're not that great looking; you are smart, but you are sexist, and you need a consciousness raising.

/end rant

There's no excuse for this, DNC.  None.

Yea, basically demoted (0.00 / 0)
for now. Riverdaughter has a more cynical take on it.

But why are they being sidelined?  What possible harm could they do now?  Exactly.  Their job is done.  They took out Hillary Clinton.  Now's the time to bring in the less overtly vitriolic team to shore up NBC's reputation and return to the status quo of treating Republicans with kid gloves while covering the Democrats less gently.  The whole mechanism is reconstructed as it is every four years.

Maybe I'm more of an optimist, but I believe this is a significant next step from Shuster's suspension and we need to keep putting pressure on GE, NBC, and the heads of MSNBC to make the necessary changes.

There's something to this though (0.00 / 0)
I've been bothered by the fact that accusations of sexism against Hillary fell on deaf ears and the Democratic Party just sat on its hands.  As soon as the press (traditional and new) started in on Sarah Palin, the Republicans leapt to her defense.

Now, the same with MSNBC.  Arguments about bias went unheded all the primary season.  But now that the bias is being applied to the Republicans, NBC decides to make a change.

The one argument that can be made against the cynical interpretation, though, is that rumors of disention within NBC have been growing louder.  Maybe Tom Brokow just finally won his battle of news integrity.

I think the criticism has been growing louder from all corners. I think the last straw was Matthews and Olbermann cat fighting during the convention and coming in last in the ratings.

Unfortunately, I think what happened to Hillary and the media bias in favor of Obama in general set the precedent. The record of sexism, misogyny, and bias had clearly been established by the time Palin came into the picture.

From an email from WomenCount: (0.00 / 0)
Dear Supporter,

They were two of the biggest perpetrators of sexist comments during this election - MSNBC's Keith Olbermann and Chris Matthews - and now they have been dethroned from their anchor posts and returned to commentary roles at the network.

Their displays of extreme gender bias were not cited as even a factor in the reshuffling, but WomenCount heralds the move as a victory in the fight to stamp out sexism on the campaign trail. Our efforts specifically call on party leaders - or corporate chiefs, as the case may be - to "stop the silence" on sexism. Booting those in high-profile media posts is a good step.

Olbermann famously suggested that someone should take Hillary Clinton "into a room and only he comes out." His attack reached a new low in its threat of violence.

Chris Matthews called Hillary a "she-devil" and "witchy" and lamented that the reason she was a United States Senator and candidate for president was that her "husband messed around. We keep forgetting it. She didn't win [the Senate race] on her merit."

Offensive is an understatement. The only thing worse is that Olbermann and Matthews sat in their anchor chairs for as long as they did.

We find it mysterious that no one's talking about their well-documented patterns of gender bias as a factor in their dismissals. In today's news coverage of their removals, we could not find any mention of their sexist and offensive behavior, from the New York Times to NPR. These are news organizations that know better........

This is what the TV execs need to understand.

At least Chris Matthews' wife told him to knock it off. (0.00 / 0)
Whereas "Oba-mann" didn't have anyone to tell him off.  Even his mother failed to do so, or maybe he didn't listen to her.

At any rate, see my rant above.  KO needs to date higher quality, smart women, perhaps those out of the public eye -- if any will have him after all his sexism, which I doubt.

I credit Tom Brokaw and (0.00 / 0)
WomenCount, and whoever made that video "Sexism Sells, But We're Not Buying It." And - I think the tipping point was that a woman was picked as veep and they were afraid it would all flare up again.

kos: Why MSNBC Caved on Matthews/Olbermann (0.00 / 0)
he says it's because of pressure from McCain.
Just more evidence that their side plays the game far better than ours. Politics is a contact sport, which puts us at a huge disadvantage when only one side seems to grasp the rules.
