fathers used to sell daughters into prostitution in the Wild West in order to settle debts. (And they apparently do that today overseas.)
I heard Billy Jean King once and she said the fathers who watched her play Bobby Riggs back in the early 1970s, these men tell her witnessing that match makes them approach the raising of their daughters differently.
But otherwise, men (and sexist women) just know what they know and won't open their eyes wider unless they have to.
